What have you purchased recently?

Drill presses are a really nice to have tool, I’m too impatient to use mine for small holes (mines not in the most convenient place in my garage), but for anything over about 5mm I’ll use it.
I really wish mine had more torque for very large holes and I’ve been considering replacing it (I think it’s probably 25 years old and it was towards the bottom of the line when I bought it), drilling one of the ~25mm hole in the front of my last amp for the XLR socket, with a carbide hole saw, involved it stalling a lot.
But that should probably just have been done in the CNC, but again it’s a convenience thing, setup to make that hole on the CNC is 100x longer than just dealing with the stalling, and I tend to find myself gravitating towards just using what’s good enough and easiest when it comes to case work.

Good work on the bench it’s a lot nicer than mine :stuck_out_tongue:
Though I’ve been considering building a new one.

Nice work! It’s always great to get a good work space setup and add good tools to it!

Not helping! Thanks.

One of the things that stopped me from buying one of the cheaper models was this consideration. I use carbide hole saws too and I decided that I wanted to wait to get a drill that would have enough torque to do it properly. Convenience does matter!

Thank you. That was partly to dig up all the woodwork I learnt at school oh so long ago, partly to prove to partner that yes I could do it and mostly for the joy of it. I had a lot of fun researching types and methods of building. I got more ambitious as I went, hence the leg vise!

Yes! I’ve not had one before. One of the side effects of being female is that sometimes you feel silly for wanting things like this, people are kind of sceptical about whether you actually need/want/can use it so I had to convince myself I could have it which took a lot longer than actually doing things that needed it. Partner is simultaneously very jealous that I got taught practical things like this when I was young and also very much under estimates both herself and me. Dads, teach your daughters how to use hand and power tools!

FWIW not being a daughter, my Dad tried to teach me a lot of practical things when I was younger and my Grandfather was an astonishingly good wood worker using exclusively hand tools among other things.

I learned basically nothing from them outside the name of every esoteric hand tool you might ever consider using, because I wasn’t interested and didn’t have the patience.
I taught myself metal working, machining and wood working (none of which I’m very good at) post internet in direct response to needing them to solve specific problems I ran into in my other hobbies.

On the other hand I learned a lot from my mother about baking which I rarely use, but it’s nice to have when I do want to bake something.

Though I absolutely agree everyone should be given the opportunity to learn. And just being told you can at a young age gives you confidence to try and push through failures later.

Yes that really. Just try and teach all kids all the things, some things will interest them, some not and that’s fine! It really is the confidence thing. I had practical lessons at school for woodwork, cooking, sewing, metalwork alongside my academic subjects. Just basic level things, but it has given me lifelong confidence that I can at least attempt things.

It’s great that you have decided to go for it. There’s absolutely nothing that should hold you back and you definitely should never feel silly for a wanting/doing stuff like this! It’s great that you were able to learn the skills in school. Even if you have forgotten specifics, it they will come back.

I try to get my daughter out in the garage to work on stuff with me whenever I can. She’s not that into most of it but at least she’s getting exposure and is learning a few things here and there.

@dB_Cooper I want to thank you for passing your OpticalRendu woes my way. I think I mentioned that I had bought an Innuos Pulse to replace my dead UltraRendu in another thread? It came in DOA. Really good CS experience from Innuos, though. They asked me a couple of questions and got a replacement unit shipped out in under 24 hours.

all’s well that ends well. Now about that pulse and how much above the ultraRendu does it stack? I’ve been really happy leaving it all behind and consolidating to simply the Lumin U2 feeding my Mojo.

Just have a shit ton of expensive USB cables I’ve got to move now and expensive USB cables are a tough sell for many. lol

With these I finish my grado collection, after trying around 16 to 18 different grado models (even hp1000) these were my top 5 not only in sound but in complementing each others signatures

Gs3000e
Ps500
Ps1000e
Sr325is Gold
Rs1e

Today arrived the last 2

As a grado collector it just feels so complete, the only extra thing id add is a gh2 but I dont feel the urge. These grados are my faves.

I bought a pair of Ken Rad VT-231 mostly out of curiosity since a lot of people says it have one of the best bass for the 6SN7 tubes. I gotta say, so far it’s been living up to its praises. Even the DCA Stealth recognizes how much of a beast these tubes are.

A kind soul offered for me to receive his Prelude and put it through it’s paces before sending it on to him. It’s just landed and I could not be more excited to hear my new OG Utopia on it. This apparently pairs well with that Utopia.

Build quality is nice on the Prelude. Although only weighing 7 kg on paper, this thing feels much weightier in the hand. I expect I’ll be burning it in for the next week or so, but fortunately Autumn has very much arrived here in the U.K. and my office could do with being warmer!
