Oh my bad, that’s an important thing to mention. I had NOS Tung Sol 6SN7 GTB and 7062 philips heerlen pinched waist D getter with adapters. The 7062s were super microphonic in that preamp for me but if I had kept it longer I would have tried some tube dampeners and better vibration isolation on my rack.

Holo red Impressions after 2 days coming from the Douk U2 (Coax) @MacDLaw.
Red > AES WBC > Soekris > XLR WBC > v550 > Dana reference >Utopia 2020
I was expecting a 5-10% increase in sound quality, but this is a different animal all together! I can’t put numbers in here. It sounds more resolving, faster, tighter, coherent, and cleaner. Also, the presentation changed a bit. It’s like the soundstage became fuller like having a sphere in front of you. The singer is no longer forward while everything is behind him. It is like the singer is in the center of the sphere and everything is happening everywhere within that sphere (Might be the extra reverbs that fill the stage). It is more immersive too. I lost some midrange sweetness and got more sub-bass (a hint). It sounds “Better”, but the small change in frequency has me wanting a little more warmth and richness overall. Before swapping I was enjoying more acoustic music, now pop and EDM sound more delicious.
To my surprise, as @elementze mentioned on the Alpha USB I’m having a dilemma here. I need a few days to get used to this sound, but in the end, it is more forward and resolving. I need to pull it together and get a warmer DAC or a Tube amp to pair with the no-prisoners land Utopia 2020.

Im thinking about improving those WBC AES and interconnects for something just a bit nicer but I wonder if I will hear a change as good as the supra excalibur usb input was…
My only deterrent is I cant really hear an improvement with pangea power cables which maybe coz im connecting it to a cheap old power conditioner
The v550 and the utopia will really like a nice warmer dac like the yggy og or the exogal comet+, the new black ice dac and pontus 2 anniversary also seem decent

Nice! My 2cents - take your time to adjust to the new sound. If the sound isn’t quite right, there’s a good chance that you just made your overall system more resolving and at the same time moved the weak point to a different place. Time to experiment and move things around

Got this preamp (Herron vtsp 360 reference) few months back … ordered it last year before Keith closed shop. My preamp search ended here.

Lousy design aesthetics. It looks like a warehouse box that was kicked around by UPS. Not sure what they are doing with the shiny and matte mix on top.
