What have you purchased recently?

And expensive…

I know Brent Jesse raves about it as a 5u4g alternative.

I paid around used EML mesh 5U4G used prices. Not terrible. Especially if it’s legit.

Still looking for an Elrog 5U4G tho.

The GEC were pretty high quality tubes. The GEC kt66 i have for the lampi are 100% british sound but without the downsides of it sometimes being too mushy or mid dominant. They have great air and ethereal holographic type staging. Hopefully this is a win shen you get to try it

Possibly the most esoteric purchase I’ve ever made. I spent the best part of a year tracking these down and in a very short space of time found two sources (that might have been one source but anyway!)

They are one of the most recent through hole pcb versions of the “Super Symmetry” Dynalo amplifier with Golden Reference psu by Kevin Gilmore. There is a more recent design using smb parts but that was even harder to find and of less interest to me. Given some of the small details of the full set of pcbs and matched transistors I have a high confidence that this is a genuine set from a group buy which was what I was after, rather than a clone.

For anyone who is saying “eh wtf does that all have to do with anything?”: Kevin Gilmore’s designs are widely seen as being extremely interesting and high quality. The HeadAmp GS-X Mini is a based on this amp and psu. The original design is a good twenty years old at this point but has been steadily revised up until fairly recently. The Dynalo is a low impedance, fully balanced amplifier and this edition is a version revised to make use of ideas by Nelson Pass about the design of balanced amplifiers, known as “Super Symmetry”.

That is almost certainly enough audio nerdery for one post but I have more if anyone really wants it.

I am excited for this build. Any intentions of making a thread for it or just some before/after pics?

Oh cool thanks
I can do a thread, no problem, I’d enjoy that. I think it would be interesting enough to do a little more detail on. I’m thinking to build it probably in late October or in November.

Yes please for the thread!

Yesss…i so desperately want to make time to teach myself so i too can make something someday. I live vicariously through you guys😍 Take all the pictures and speak all the nerd speak you want as you find the energy to post. Hell do a DIY article and post it to the front page to catch more traffic. Great projects! Great pics! Great presentation of the material🤌

Recently bought a pair of stabilized ZMF Atrium Closed. I can’t capture how rich the green color is. Perhaps if I didn’t try to take photos outside… but I do, so imagine the color a little richer.

I do love this headphone. If someone wanted to own one ZMF, I’d probably recommend the Atrium Open or Caldera, but the bass-heavy sound of the AC makes this my most fun headphone.

And for those of you not interested in my backyard, here are some close ups of the cups:

Those are amazingly gorgeous! A bit redundant I suppose… I always enjoy your garden too.

Is that stand from Casey? (@rustyrat on headphones dot com).

I like my AO a lot as a contrast to Utopia :+1:

Picked up the Bryston again to compare against the MJ3. Should be a nice competition.

And a EML 5U4G with a damper.

Yes, that’s one of Casey’s. I have two of his now. I don’t need any more stands, but he does such great work that I can’t help myself.

BHA-1 is severely underrated, my universal solid state amp where it does no wrong with any can I’ve thrown at it, except Susvara.

Hopefully second time is a charm :+1:t3:

I might be the first person in the world to buy a used Mjolnir 3. I couldn’t resist when one popped up for sale the other day. I had already been stalking the Schiit deals page after missing out on a couple B-stock units. I should have it tomorrow if I manage to be home to sign for it when the mailman comes by.

I’m going to see if the MJ3 can improve upon the excellent sound I’m getting from my Cayin iHA-6 with my Yggy A2 and Meze Elite. If it’s not noticeably better to me, I’m sure I’ll have no problem finding it a new home.

So, after owning the Clear OG and really not enjoying it a lot i found an Elex for a super cheap price and decided to give them a go, to my surprise i actually enjoyed their sound quite a bit!
Now i am purchasing another pair of Clear OGs so i can try them in my newer chain which has much improved since i had the Clears.

I am thinking if i enjoyed the Elex now i should finally be able to enjoy the Clear OG, they never really impressed me before so fingers crossed!

Recently purchased these via Amazon. Just wanted to try them out and they’ve worked out VERY well. They claim to offer a combination of absorption and refraction and at least where I’ve got them now, they’ve tightened up the bass considerably. Seem to take away some of the slop and there’s a sense of additional texture that I’m enjoying a lot. Nothing comes without compromise however, they did take away some of the stage width but I think it was more of an artificiality from the first reflection point. Overall a much more convincing presentation that seems to have gained technicality. So a keeper!

They’ve manual labor intensive as you have to build the individual triangles as they come flat packed. You then have to peel and stick an adhesive pad and then stick that on the wall. The adhesive is designed to come off easily without damage to paint so that’s good but if you mess it up, you’ll ruin the adhesive pad.

I just found out that I will have to go back into the office 2 days a week for work. Due to that, I just bought a used iBasso DX170 for $200.

I’ll have to buy a pair of closed back headphones or IEMs as well. I’m shopping for a pair of closed backs under $300…dont want to bring anything too high end into the office. For IEMs, I am considering if they are easy to fit (I am extremely picky with IEMs and comfort & fit).

this might be a surprise option but I actually recommend the Audeze Maxwell
