And here I thought they were my secret haha, thank you…
Is that a dac or streamer?
It is both, d1-core with internal streamer card and the fancy USB cable td sells with the d1-streamer-mk2
Nice! Will be very interested in what you think compared to the SF PRO-3
Ha, I was waiting for you to mention something along those lines with our DAC overlaps ![]()
After selling my Quicksilver, I have been on the prowl for a nice DAC upgrade. I’ve stuck with the OG Bifrost 2 for 2-3 years now, and it has served me well. It was a great fit when my Auteur was my best set of headphones. After getting the Meze Elite, I’ve started to wonder if the BF2 might be holding these headphones back a bit. You know how our crazy audiophile minds work.
With money burning a whole in my PayPal-account balance pocket, I scoured the internet for a good deal on a used Yggdrasil. I was looking for a nice A2/OG with Unison USB. I wasn’t opposed to a LIM, but having heard one of those before, I was curious to try the A2. Tonight I got lucky and snagged a pristine Yggy A2 that came with the LIM board as well. I got it for only $100 more than I was going to spend on a used A2 a few days ago. The A2/OG board is currently installed, so I’ll stick with that initially. If I like the A2 enough, I might just sell the LIM board to recoup some cash. Though knowing the way my brain operates, I probably won’t be able to resist trying the LIM since my amp and headphones have changed since the last time I demoed it in-house.
All this to say, I’m excited to have a nicer DAC heading my way!
Hey congrats! I went from the OG Bifrost after about three years to an Yggy OG myself, very happy with it, enjoy!
I used the yggy og exclusively for a month and thinking was it worth it? Then went back to bf2 just to see, I was like what happened to music? The bf2 was dark muted and flat compared to the yggy.
If I have that same experience, I think my BF2 will go up for sale.
How long does the Yggy A2 need to be powered on before operating optimally? Is there a generally accepted amount of time? A week, a month? I’m assuming music doesn’t need to be played through it the whole time. Am I overthinking all this?!
When mine was new I kept hearing changes until around 300 hours of music play then it was stable. Never turned it off so not sure about warm up time.
I bought mine used, and the unit is over a year old, so I assume it will have been burned in plenty. I’ll just leave it on and enjoy the music.
Which amp and headphone you will use it with?
I’ll be using the XLR outs of the Yggy into my Cayin iHA-6 with my Meze Elite. I’ll also have the RCA outs connected to my SW51+ with my ZMF Auteur. I recently sold my two “pricier” amps, the Quicksilver and the Cen.Grand Little Silver Fox. I really like the synergy between the Cayin and Elite, so I shifted some funds into a better DAC. I’m still considering something like the Holo Audio Bliss in the future, but I want to get a feel for what the Yggy brings to the table before changing anything else in my chain.
Waiting for you
I think there is a bit of an urban myth about the Yggy having to be on for several weeks before sounding good, and if you ever unplug it for even a few minutes, you have to warm it up again for another several weeks.
But similar to R2R dacs (I’m not sure if multibit is similar to or the same as R2R), it benefits from reaching it’s operating temperature, which also means it should not be turned off. When I owned one, I found that I enjoyed it more after about 24 hours. Did it get better after that? Who knows, I was too busy listening to music.
I also think the “gimped SE” reputation is a bit overdone. Are the XLR outputs better? Yes, I think so, but not night and day IMO, for the A2 at least. I really enjoyed the Yggy connected to my Pendant using the SE out. I’ve been told that the earlier Yggies had a bigger difference between balanced and SE, but I only have experience with the A2. That’s not to say that you couldn’t notice differences, but why bother trying, unless you’re really curious.
This is the right perspective. I think I’ll be too busy enjoying music to worry whether or not my Yggy has been on for an adequate number of hours. I do plan to leave it on though. I’ve always left my BF2 on as well.
Timing is a little off, but who knows, the Yggy might be such an obvious upgrade that I may reach out to that person later this week!
I finally invested in a nice basic audio rack. I got the Monoprice “Espresso” one because it was on sale. It was relatively easy to assemble and seems very sturdy. It’s quite a bit heavier than I expected. Luckily for me it arrived before the Yggy. I wasn’t sure where I was going to put that monstrosity before ordering this rack.
Exactly!
I also have a Yggy OG made in the last year, so it’s technically A2 and all the latest… I leave mine on all the time too, just like when I had a BF2, but I powered it down the other day when I got my new amp (Ntisch/ECP DSHA-2FN
) and powered back up within 30-40 minutes, no big deal.
Going from cold power up it sounds better after reaching operating temp (an hour?), but I think after it’s been burned-in it’s much less a big deal.
I also fully agree with @PaisleyUnderground regarding the “gimped SE” subject, mine has fed tube amps and SS and sounds just fine.
Schiit says “Analog Stage: Fully discrete, DC coupled Class A FET buffers optimized for high current output and fully discrete, Class A FET summing stages for single-ended output”. IDK, ymmv and all that but it seems more than adequate to me.
Enjoy it! I think you’ll be glad you made the upgrade from BF2, I definitely was. BF2 is great especially for the price, but no doubt the Yggy is better.
