Hey everyone, new guy here < insert awkward wave hello >
I appreciate the opportunity to hangout with this group! Just reading through the forum for the last day it’s obvious that this is pretty chill place, looking to enjoy music and HiFi equipment. My HiFi journey is at a bit of an inflection point right now, where I’m looking break out beyond the $500 price point for any one piece of kit in my setup. So most of the equipment discussed here is still somewhat aspirational for me. But looking at your setups and reading the discussions, it’s helping me figure out where to make my next move. I’m certain I’ll have a lot of questions, and hopefully I’ll find places where I can contribute as well.
→ apologies up front, my writeup below here got a little long winded, oops ←
Here are a few shots of my current setup - I recently dumped a bunch of my early chi-fi acquisitions to start maturing my setup towards something I want longer term. Hence the generally empty left-hand-side of my desk (room to expand!)
[Work from home for the last 527 days… this has brought new meaning to daily driver setup!]
[The Topping E30/L30 is one of the last vestiges from my early chi-fi wanderings. I keep it to run the iLoud Micro Monitors on my desk. The L30 get’s absolutely zero headphone time - but it does make for a decent volume control pre-amp to the iLouds. And the E30 supports Native DSD (bypassing most of the internal “stuff”), feeding it DSD from HQPlayer out of Roon - fun to experiment with! The Revolution feeds the G111, running bit-perfect from Roon. Both served out of the USB on the Raspbery Pi4 endpoint.]
[I have a problem with stickers - I’m originally from Portland Oregon, hence the giant OREGON sticker. (living in PHX AZ now)]
[A view of the backside. Shanti LPS running the Revolution and the RPi4 streamer. If you squint you can see the little iFi USB iPurifier connected to the E30 - because I found it for sale locally for $40 and figured why not.]
[Panoramic shot, makes the corner desk look goofy, but it’s my view of the world for now. Vertical monitor for running Roon throught the day - I’ve used it this way for so long I can’t stand Roon on a landscape monitor any more.]
[Opposite corner of the room is my reading / listening / movie watching chair.]
[Nothing too extraordinary going on here, mainly the Jotenheim 2 and the Soncoz LA-QXD1 (another Chi-Fi holdover). The DT880’s are killer for movies, so they live here, but often they wander back to my desk since they sound so good on the G111. There’s a little Loki hiding in the background, sometimes I use it to EQ movies. Also hiding here (attached to the underside of the shelf) are the RPi4 Ropieee end point, and a monoprice bluetooth receiver that outputs Toslink and supports APTX-LL. Avoids long cable runs from the TV. And in the spirit of overdoing it, I put an iFi SPDIF iPurifier in line with the toslink. Again, why not, picked it up locally for cheep.]
[Sitting in the chair and looking across the room: desk to the right, TV on oposite wall, and headphones in the corner]
[TV has HDMI ARC to optical converter, feeding bluetooth transmitter. Bypass bluetooth to feed miniDSP. The miniDSP is correcting the Audioengine A2’s and feeding them “mono”. Given the room configuration I gave up on stereo imaging for basic TV watching. And if I want to really care about the sound I listen via headphones anyway.]
[Last but not least, the headphones in the corner, hanging out with Abraham Lincoln]
- Blue Sound Mix-Fi (found local for $60, sound is 'meh, but keep them as conversation starters)
- Sony CD900-ST
- Sennheiser HD660s
- Hifiman Sundara
- Beyerdynamic TYGR 300R
- Koss KPH30i (two pair here, several others around the house for kids to use)
- (various IEMs, most interesting being the Tin P1, need to up the IEM game real bad)
- Grado Hemps
- Top shelf middle the Hiby R5 and Fiio BTR5 are hanging out.
Definitely entry level cans, probably where the $$$ need to go next.
Like I said up front, nothing magical here, no one piece over $500. But I feel it’s a fairly consistent setup for this price point, nothing too out of balance. I go round and round on what my “breakout” purchase is going to be as I move my setup towards the $1k price point. I want to stick with my slow-and-steady upgrades, but I feel that my gear will support much better headphones/IEMs at this point. So that’s where I think I’ll go next.
/ wow… way to go new guy… super long post! /
