wait what u infuriated about? lol
I really like how the base of the stack is that old school Tascam unit, what is it particularly?
Is the green led a streamer or a reclocker?
It’s a DDC- a Matrix XSPDIF. The led is BRIGHT so you probably can see one of those dim stickers on it. The Wavedream’s USB implementation is supposed to be very good so I’ve considered bypassing the DDC, but have yet to do any comparisons.
Another fun feature- The Wavedream can choose to use either the Wavedream’s internal clock or the source clock (most DACs only use their own internal clock). I use the Wavedream’s clock currently, but if I ever end up upgrading my source to something with a super dooper, oven controlled, atomic clock wired with unicorn hair or something I can slave the Wavedream’s R2R modules directly to the that superior external clock.
To top it off, if I connect the unicorn source to the Wavedream via I2S with the HDMI cable you gave me, there would be a direct, dedicated wired connection between the external clock and the R2R modules. Pretty cool!!
Killer components, and the overall setup simplicity is awesome!
That’s the way Matrix Audio intended the X-SPDIF to be used (with their X-Sabre DACs).
The X-SPDIF actually has a very good clock. You should try it with your Wavedream. You may surprised.
It’s a CDA500 I got used, and while I bought it for the intentions of being dual-purpose (since I have sizeable CD collection along w/ my cassettes), it doesn’t recognize at least half of the CDs I’ve popped into it. It’s wonderful as a cassette player with all its functionality, though.
You’re right, I should. It’s easy, just a couple button clicks. I’ll give it a go this afternoon!
Sweet! Looking forward to hearing about your results.
I’ve read on the PS Audio threads that some prefer the X-SPDIF to costlier alternatives for external clocks via I2S for their DACs. Pretty cool since it’s relatively inexpensive.
So how does it work, simply setting the MCLK dip switch when using I2S it will act as the master clock for the signal?
It’s a setting within the Wavedream menu.
If it’s set to use the Wavedream’s clock it doesn’t disable the DDC’s clock. It just re-clocks it using the WD’s clock. If the clock is set to the DDC’s clock, it bypasses the WD’s clock and uses the DDC’s clock signal to time the R2R modules.
At least, I think that’s how it works.
I’d assume you are talking about the PLL setting correct?
Yes. Please set my awkward explanation straight!
Oh, you’re right! I dont’ know what to make of that chart, though. Does the MCLK switch turn the XSPDIF’s clock on or off? Need to do more research!
EDIT: Nothing on a quick Google search, so until I get a find info to the contrary I’ll work on the assumption that MCLK ON means that the XSPDIF is set as the master clock.
@Andy77 , did you ever get the I2S setup? I’m curious as to your results.
I used to have my main chain set up such that it was plugged into both my phone and my work laptop, but recently, I’ve completely separated out my work laptop from my chain altogether. So now if I need to get on a video call or watch a YouTube video or something, I’m listening on a different set of headphones through the headphone out on my audio interface instead of through my main setup.
Funnily enough, I feel like listening to this laptop/audio interface chain on a regular basis, even for non-music purposes, is actively making me appreciate my main chain a lot more.
Time to show my progress, after covid I started collecting stuff and this is where im at
Sorry for the dark room my ceiling lightbulb is busted so yeah, also the cabling is also a mess for the moment
