Anyone in the EU who is after the Bifrost, they are currently (and probably very briefly) in stock at Schiit Europe.
In terms of price it might actually make sense to order from the US. I canāt quite remember, but I got mine new for like 800-900 ⬠including shipping and import tax. Which is less than the 999 ⬠they ask.
(although I guess that also depends on the current currency exchange rate)
Depends on where you live too. Would have ended up being about 1050 for me when i was shopping for one. The big kicker is the warrantee, Schiit only offer it for units bought in the US.
Its less favourable now, I bought mine when buying in US was a decent deal, now itās just not worth it in most cases.
As for the warranty, I just sent mine in for repair, all I had to pay was 1-way shipping to Schiit. They didnāt charge me for the return (yet).
Fedex marked my shipment as delivered, when I checked with Schiit they didnāt receive it and there was nobody with the signatory name that worked there. The lady at Schiit said they would check with neighbours and their Fedex guy, day later I got receipt confirmation from Schiit. Friendly and helpful folks at Schiit for sure.
Iām going to copy a question here that I originally posted in the Yggdrasil thread over on Head-Fi. I didnāt ever get an answer over there, so I thought Iād ask here as well. Hereās the post:
Could someone explain what makes the LIM and MIL versions of the Yggy different from the older versions with respect to their single-ended outputs? Common knowledge seems to be that the Yggy A1 and A2 (now OG) have āgimpedā single-ended outputs. On those older models, the balanced outputs are considered superior. Itās my understanding that all versions of the Yggy are inherently balanced, so the RCA outs are always going to include an extra bit of processing versus the XLR outs. Why are the LIM and MIL seemingly immune to the sound degradation of the older Yggy models?
There are differences talked about in the documentation. Besides the different multibit DACs used in each of the flavors, they also list this:
OG: Analog Stage: Fully discrete, DC coupled Class A FET buffers optimized for high current output and fully discrete, Class A FET summing stages for single-ended output
LIM & MIL: Analog Stage: Integrated, using LME49724 differential stage
So the question becomes is the Balanced output on the OG better than the balanced output on the LIM & MIL?
Interesting. I have only considered the LIM since I exclusively use single-ended tube amps. I wanted to understand why the SE output of the LIM was better than the SE output of the OG.
If youāre looking for a DAC and youāre exclusively SE, take a look at the Mojo Mystique V2 SE. Iām on the fence as to whether or not to sell mine so if you find that youāre interested, let me know but 1) is very similar to the Schiit signature and technicalities IMO, theyāre both more fun and forward with a warmer lean. 2) being SE out only itās a very good analog implementation.
Did not intend to turn this into a sales pitch but right now I have one sitting on my shelf wondering what to do with it. lol
I thought the SE outputs of my Yggy A2 were fine, driving a ZMF Pendant amp. I was surprised at how good it sounded, because of its bad reputation, and after asking around in various forums, I was told the difference in quality between balanced and SE was larger in the A1, and that was where itās reputation came from. Having said that, I did use balanced to connect to my other amps.
Also, I agree with you, based on my experience with the Mojo Mystique X, that Mojoās house sound is similar to Schiitās multibit house sound, but taken up a notch so it provides a nice evolutionary path.
Mmmm another spare DAC to play with
ā¦.
@dB_Cooper what are your future needs and desires?
Iām certainly no EE, and have only a rudimentary understanding of what constitutes a āgoodā or superior design.
It seems from Schiitās description of the analog output stage that OG should be better than the MIL or LIM, since itās fully discrete with no opamps involved. But what do I know?
But my personal experience lines up with @PaisleyUnderground, I have the OG and it is not ādeficientā in the least with SE output. Mine is a current example, purchased new about 5 months ago. As always, YMMV
I am almost interested to grab it from you to see what input version is superior. But in all honesty @ckhirnigs , the mojo feels like a better schiit. While i havent had time with a yggy, the v2xa i have feels like a refined bf2 with a more balanced micro and macro. It tames down the huge bombastic nature of the bf2, (everyone loves the fun drunk, untill theyre too drunk) yet still keeps the fun and the groove. I dont know how else to describe it as it just sounds more refined and ārightā, maybe a bit more eased delivery.
Iāve learned enough to try and hold on to DACs because Iāve regretted 3 DACs Iāve sold. A Bel Canto DAC 2 which was my first over $200 DAC. The Schiit BF2 which I sold and wound up buying back another one for $50 more! lol and my Holo Cyan which was a great desktop DAC.
For someone like me thatās all digital and committed to an all higher end digital stream, a DAC is a perfect way to change the flavor up a bit without disrupting the rest of the system.
That does sound like youāre describing the Yggy, at least in my experience.
I went from a BF2 OG to Yggy OG, and in addition to what you said it has a more expansive soundstage, much better bass control and definition, and more refined treble.
It would be interesting to do a side by side comparison with the Mystique!
To be fair this could be any significant upgrade to any piece of electronics.
Itā why itās so hard to compare at different price points, and any changes to color tend to be whatās talked about. You end up reduced to itās just better.
Haha, thatās very true!
Having had both, I can say that I found them both similar in performance and signature. But the Mystique is SE out only, so you get no compromise in their SE implementation. The BF is a great DAC for what it does and it fits in under a square foot of desktop real estate which since HP is not my main focus, I can live with less than the best.
Actually this whole hobby would be SOOOOOO much cheaper if we could simply live with less than the best we could afford. The next tier up always seems to be 3X more expensive anyway.
Does your Mojo Mystique have a USB or S/PDIF input? Iāve been doing some research and saw it came with one or the other.
One or the other. Itās for very decisive people. lol
I always figure you double the expenditure per tier, but I agree with the sentiment.
