Schiit DAC/Source thread, Bifrost / Gungnir / Yggdrasil / Urd

My BF2 gave up

I (very carefully) swapped DACs between desk and 2-channel, was listening via coaxial when it stopped analog output and started to buzz. When I put my hand on it I also feel a vibration. 175 EUR to send it back to Schiit…

This is my 2nd (out of 3) Schiit product that dies, return sucks from EU, I’m not buying any piece of Schiit again I think.

Damn, what happened to their QC, I wonder if it’s because of their move/producing in another location. Schiit really also needs to step up their EU stores and support as well. If you do send it back and get it repaired hopefully that one won’t fail later on. Wouldn’t blame you for not wanting to buy anything from them anymore with that high of failure rate

I’m sorry to hear that, that’s er, well that’s schitty! Sorry, couldn’t help it, that does in fact suck…

This can be filed in the YMMV category, but in fairness to Schiit, I have purchased the following over the years from them with zero defects:

Modi Multi, Asgard 2, Loki Mini, Bifrost 2, Jot 2, Valhalla 2, Lyr 3, and Yggy OG.

This gear charts some of my audio chain progression over the last 4-5 years, and much of it is still in use in different setups. I’ve had no issues…

Happy to hear there are people with no defects at all, I could just be unlucky I guess. But like Mon said, they need to stock their EU stores so they ship their intercontinental stuff palletized iso piece by piece, I suspect lower failure rate on EU devices and for sure a more honest repair & return policy.

I’m sorry to hear your BF2 died too. Honestly this is my second schiit that has died as well. My first was the Hel that I would use at work (they basically gave me a brand new one as a replacement), and now my Bifrost 2. Yeah if I was in your situation I probably wouldn’t keep buying schiit either, they’re really only a good-ish deal in the USA (especially when you consider the cost to RMA).

Speaking of RMA process…
UPS lost my Bifrost 2 on it’s way to get fixed (in California no less, they were so close lol). And since ā€œUPSā€ and ā€œThe UPS Storeā€ are technically two separate entities, I had to go through 2 claims processes. Only for ā€œThe UPS Storeā€ to tell me it can take 21 business days to resolve ā€œmore or lessā€. So my dreams of having a good DAC for my PC setup have been dashed momentarily. Good thing I insured it for the value of the DAC, hopefully they actually give me my money back though.

So very sorry to hear of your troubles especially with the added cost of shipping involved. My BF2 also burnt up inside within a few weeks of purchase. It too cost me money to ship back but it was replaced completely.
The new unit worked fine and I later sold it off and as far as I know is still working. I too have had equipment go bad that required intercontinental shipping and the cost involved really makes it impossible to ever let go of the piece since you will only get a return of Pennies to your investment.
Hopefully they make it right and you can enjoy for many years to come! :+1:

Why does it seem like this literally is only hitting BF2 as well? Seems like yggy and gumby are largely unaffected. I think people with Jot 2 are also having this issue as well, so I guess their more midrange offerings have some sort of component or design flaw and their higher end don’t? Or do the higher end products just have more strict QC? donno

Or there are just a lot more of their midrange offerings out there.
It’s hard to guess failure rates based on forum posts.
I’m going to guess Schiit has a European distributor that deals with Europe, rather than doing it themselves, that can often be problematic, especially if there is a limited supply. I’m not sure they’d be my first choice for components in the EU.

True. Although I mean you do see the yggy everywhere, I wouldn’t be surprised if there actually might be more yggy out there than bf2 given their age and honestly bigger hype than the bf2 for longer

They do but they are starved of stock. I think they have had BF2s to sell about once in the last couple of years and they sold out in under a day. They rarely have anything to sell and the only way to get a chance to buy what does come in is by luck. They also are not authorised to do any warrantee support for devices bought direct from Schiit. Essentially Schiit only fully supports purchases made in the US and says up front that outside there you are pretty much out of luck if it goes wrong and you bought direct - they will only cover repair cost, no shipping in either direction.

I also wonder if there was some bad components due to pandemic / supply issues. I would wonder if its certain batches.

The BF2 failure rate seems darn high and is making me reluctant to sell that asus dac/amp combo i have just as a backup.

Theyre warranty policy seems very ā€œokā€ as well, but not good or great.

I meant OG, LIM, or MIL Einstein!

Haha, fair question - I got the LIM version.

For sure! I was actually debating if it should be the other way around so the amp has more room to breathe, but with the massive heat sinks on the side it really never even gets that warm, so I’m happy with how it’s set up for now. And yes it’s a massive stack lol.

Thanks @M0N! As luck would have it, the day before it got here the right driver in my HE6se died , so I had to send that back for a replacement. So currently I don’t really have any headphones that can appreciate the technicalities, but even on my 6XX and TYGR, there’s a definite boost in the bass frequency which I’m enjoying and is what I was looking for compared to the VMV D1se.

The other distinct thing I’m hearing is greater separation and imaging with regards to the instruments. It’s almost… bizarre lol. This will easily be the most expensive and advanced piece of source equipment I’ve owned so hearing this stuff for the first time is reaaaaally interesting and cool. Sounds great so far. I’m also planning to leave it on for an extended period of time as I’ve read that it typically takes a few days to really open up.
