I did not try this feature and don’t own headphones anymore but as long as it is actually what I think this EQ repository is about then please read on.
You’re using this feature for something it’s not intended to do, and frankly is impossible to do to begin with.
The EQ presets shown for each headphones are tuning variations that people feel make that specific headphone better sounding. Picking anything that isn’t under the list of your headphone is more likely to ruin the sound than help in any way, and absolutely won’t get it to sound like the other headphone you selected an option from.
Yes, you’re right about that.
It’s my opinion that not everyone has to have.
And it doesn’t matter whether it’s speakers or headphones, I think they have to be able to do what they like without EQ.
I have a bit more understanding for loudspeakers if they allow it and loudspeakers are also more complex to handle.
Room layout, size, placement, system, power, etc.
For headphones you should be more ruthless, if an EQ is really necessary, then it’s simply not the right one, there’s no getting round it.
If you personally are missing something, it’s better to look for something else.
I tried making my own EQ for the Atrium open for fun and it sounded worse than before.
The only thing that helped was a DB boost on one side to compensate for the hearing loss on bad days.
Even that I use relatively little.
In fact, I have more fun changing the tubes on the amplifier that make me feel safe or give me a change.
Hello,
I have a question for you.
The short story is that I have managed to install the Gentoo player on the current pc and it runs very well with the Ioad with the Roon Remote app.
The sound is also better although it is the same pc there are differences.
I am now thinking about doing something like this.
Unfortunately I’m having a bit of trouble sounding out hardware with it.
Maybe you can help?
The first thing I have in mind would be this one, which is still quite new on the market but looks very solid.
The second one is this one:
The third one might be a bit overpowered for me:
With 2&3 a separate power supply would not be wrong, the disadvantage would be that the Ubuntu support ends in 2 years.
Then you don’t know if you can still use it or not.
4th: would be to build or buy something on Nuc basis with Roon Rock software which is free and supported.
But I have no idea what makes sense to buy where.
Been fooling around with the headphone EQ and some of the processing functions. A improvement which surprised me. I’m going to listen like this for a few weeks and then turn it all off and see what and how much I miss it.
Honestly there’s pros and cons to every option you shared but there is nothing I’d say is inherently better than others. The LHY looks very interesting especially if it was going to be used as a USB out into a DDC.
I built my own NUC in a custom fanless case but all the options you have are good and you don’t have to deal with DIY which won’t be much cheaper in the end.
I tried out some of the presets for the Eikon today and like @Deleeh, was not impressed at all. They all made the headphones sound markedly worse. I couldn’t find any that sounded good with my FLC 8S, either, but I think I need to do some filter swapping on that anyway, so I’ll revisit. Not really looking forward to trying out filters for the Clear now…
But, there are 3 of 5 for the JVC HA-FDX1 that sound amazing, so there’s that at least. It’ll be interesting to hear what you think after turning off the adjustments in a few weeks, too @dB_Cooper
I had a similar experience, I didn’t love any of the EQ presets I tried (MYSPHERE, HD 600, Eikon), but even still, I do still plan on trying the one for my Diana V2 to see if it fairs any better.
Hello,
does anyone know which format is required for Roon Server and Dietpi when formatting the hard disc? Fat, Fat32 ect…
I have downloaded both programmes with Balena Etcher and created the image on the USB stick.
It also installs everything on it but when I remove the USB stick and boot normally it tells me reboot an select proper device or insert Boot Media in…
I suspect that the partition of the hard drive could be faulty, or the hard drive itself could be broken.
Previously it was running Windows, it could be that Fat does not cope with such Linux or Debian installer programmes.
I would like to rule this out if I knew the formatting method before I buy a new hard drive.
Unfortunately, the hard drive has produced a few blue screens under Windows, so I can’t rule out that it’s the hard drive.
@DB_Cooper
The Lhy Audio RPI would appeal to me, but I was told to stay away from Ebay and Aliexpress because of fakes and possible lack of support from LHY Audio.
The recommendation is to buy from them. With 750 SP$ not quite cheap to send to Europe.
Do you have details about your Nuc Custom build? Looks interesting.
I’m still looking but I’m really ambivalent about it.
The Pc with the I3 with 3.4 ghz would actually be enough for me, I still have a Matrix Audio Element H card.
If I could get that down to a dezified level I would be happy.
Anything the OS will read is probably fine, I think the default filesystem for DietPi is EXT4, and I’d just use that for any additional storage.
For Pi installs, your just writing an image to the SDCard.
For the initial install you usually just download an image, that will include the root filesystem.
Pretty much anything it will then format for you will be fine for an additional disk, personally I’d stay away from the linux NTFS implementation and use exFAT or FAT32 if you for some reason want the drive to work with a windows computer.
If the issue is with RoonServer install on a NUC, I’ve never done that.
The root filesystem formating is usually a part of the install process, the defaults are usually a good choice, and I’d be surprised if it defaulted to anything other than EXT4.
There however can be some complexities with ensuring a Linux install will boot, and you may have to change boot device priorities in the BIOS.
Erm thanks for your answer.
I don’t have a Nuc but a discarded Pc where I thought I could get it to work.
In the Roon forum I was told as you just said that Roon Rock package is 100% for Nuc’s, that it works on a PC would be 50:50.
So it doesn’t work for me.
But Roon Rock image formatted my hard drive where Windows 10 was on it before.
I no longer have an operating system on the hard drive.
Although it is an I3 processor I am surprised that it does not run but okay.
I was recommended to try Dietpi, which also mounts everything, but ends up just like Roon Rock.
That’s strange, somehow it doesn’t want to boot from the hard drive.
I suspect that the hard drive is broken or the partition format is wrong.
What comes to my mind spontaneously would be to move the image file from the usb stick to an external usb hard drive, because it obviously starts both images via Uefi and the PC does everything in Uefi mode.
I could try that and see if it would work.
What I can’t set in Bios on the As Rock H87 Pro4 mainboard is that it should start automatically in Uefi mode, only via the boot menu with the F11 key.
There can be multiple reasons Linux won’t boot, but usually the installs deal with most of them, I’d check your bios for what boot options are set, There was a point where there were issues if UEFI boot was setup, but it’s been a long l]time since I ran Linux outside a VM.
I’ll have to check again, but it could possibly have something to do with the mainboard.
I don’t know why, I can’t select uefi as the first boot sequence in bios.
On the newer mainboard from the other pc it is no problem to set it to check the usb ports first before loading from the harddrive.
As I said, I suspect that the hard drive is defective or the partition format is incorrect.
The latter I don’t know exactly why because I think it does it normally during an installation.
It would not be impossible because the programmes are very small and it is assumed that it has been done.
Picture 1 always shows the one with Ronn Rock and Dietpi
Just got Dietpi up and running.
Downloaded the image to the usb stick and installed it on the external hard drive and it worked on the 2nd try.
I have also installed Roon Server on it and it is running.
What I can’t quite figure out is when I’m on the main pc it starts Roon separately with the things I know. it doesn’t recognise the Roon server.
But when I start Roon from the Ipad it recognises the Roon server from the Dietpi and starts even after I have deauthorised the main pc.
Is it actually possible to run Roon from the main pc?
Is it possible that not the Roon software is needed but Roon Bridge on the main pc?
@Polygonhell
Sooo, I have now managed to get Roon running as a server with the discarded PC.
It was not that easy.
After a lot of time in Dietpi had to be inverted to familiarise myself with it, it worked.
And then I didn’t even redo everything and also installed pihole.
I installed Roon Bridge on the main PC for Windows and searched desperately for the operating programme.
Until I realised that I should try it with the IIpad and lo and behold, I configured everything there again and it works without having to move the hardware on the main PC.
It recognises the Singxer Su 2 on the Ipad which I select and load the playlist and Zack is running.
I think it definitely sounds better than on the Windows PC, I have to say.
Much better, more definition, more decay, more reverb, much more extension in all areas and crystal clear.
And still sounds good analogue with the Gustard R26.
And also better than with the integrated steaming option of the Gustard.
On windows it was sometimes too warm in sound and a bit incontinent not so nicely extended sometimes washed out.
Dietpi only runs via external hard drive, not with the Sata connected hard drive, which I don’t really care about now.
Thanks for all the help and support from all,.
You just want to install the Standard windows roon install, it includes the server, but it also has the UI, and you can connect to another server.
I run as many as 3 copies of Roon on different windows PC’s in my office, they all connect to the same Server, I also use an IPad and occasionally my android phone to control it.
I think they made things more confusing when they stopped shipping Roon Server separately for Windows, though it was clearly an attempt to simplify things.
Roon basically has 3 parts Server, which you should have 1 of and be collocated with the music collection, Remote which is what lets you select music and play it (only exists on Windows and Mobile), you want that everywhere you want to start music playing. And Bridge, which allows the device to act as a place to play music usually through a DAC, most streamers are running this, or you install in on a Pi and plug a DAC in (I personally prefer Ropiee for this because it’s single function and easy to maintain). There are lots of other options and various people have lots of opinions on which one is/sounds better.
The Windows install contains all 3 parts, if you connect to an existing server, the server never runs.
Hmm, yes, I can hear good differences between Windows and Roon server.
Where I would say Roon has the advantage, whether it is worth it now, everyone has to decide for themselves.
Back to the Windows thing, I only found Roon Bridge for windows on the Roon site.
And strangely enough, I can’t set anything there.
Unfortunately no remote or similar for windows.
I could only find Remote for Android and OS.
Then there was Roon Arc.
I couldn’t find what you mean.
Or do you mean the core plus interface?
I have uninstalled the Core Plus interface on Windows.
But I would be grateful for any help.
I don’t yet know 100% whether I will stick with the solution as it is.
It’s absolutely okay for testing to get a feel for the whole thing.
It’s a bit two much for me but good.
In fact, the LHY Audio RPi could be the winner for me at the end of the day, just because of its power consumption, there would be a lot to put down instead of a PC that would run non-stop.
