Might as well be the first post in this most presumptuious of topic areas. Ahh, it doesn’t get any more high class than Roon does it?
Anyway, since I’m in the lounge, I’m kicking off my shoes, clicking on one of Roon’s new play lists and just listening. Been really finding myself streaming a lot more when this feature was introduced. The radio recommendations never really worked out for me as they quickly got too obscure and it was just a hasle I didn’t want to sit through having to rate the choices just to it could better learn my tastes. Basically wound up just restricting the choices to my local library which is somewhat limiting in a way. The new recommended lists seems to be a much simpler, much more effective solution and the songs are much more coherent to the ethos of the list.
Also one other item to note, a new Ropiee (Roon Bridge) build was just released, 1.8 build 814 versus 1.7 build 571 which had been there pretty much forever.
I love Roon. It probably the best ROI of all my audio purchases. It’s easy to navigate, organizes my library, integrates Qobuz seamlessly, acts as sort of a mini music magazine and allows me to control all 4 of my endpoints from one iPhone app. It’s really great.
I’ve spent more time struggling with Volumio, BluOS, and MA player. Grrrrr…
yes roon is awesome, definitely worth the year sub. It has changed the way i listen to music through its metadata management and roon radio recommendations. I also love how it can be seamless and work right off the bat with my music library while also providing a ton of customization under the hood to fuel my nitpicking meticulous urges.
There is just something about being able to have multi room zones and setups all seamlessly connected to a core that serves the music up to each endpoint in a very manageable and streamlined system. love it.
Thought I’d share my 4 endpoints. Just one click from the menu bar and you can switch to and control any of your endpoints. Here are mine (cottage is just our little granny unit we use for our offices). You even have a large selection of cute icons to choose from, lol.
The new ROON custom playlist feature is just what i wanted. It was the only thing missing for me. I still enjoy the radio feature pulling music up once an album or playlist has ended but these little customized playlists based on my listening habits are great.
Roon keeps surprising me. I was sitting listening to a portable setup- Woo portable DAC/amp attached to a iPod touch. I was getting tired of reaching over and picking up amp to change the song (lazy day, lol) and I figured out that I can control the iPod just like any other Roon endpoint. Two clicks and I am controlling the iPod through the Roon app on my phone. Amazing.
I’m not sure I understand the question at all. Roon turns the laptop into a streamer instead of using it as a server (assuming you set it up as such) if that us what you are asking.
Roon turns everything into the “remote control.” The Core is the main device and, unless you set up your PC as the core, you never interact directly with the core. That’s why they use the term “endpoint.”
But what I think is being asked is does the PC consider itself the endpoint?
If your chain goes PC-DAC then the Pc is definitely the streamer, not just a remote control. But if your DAC is a Roon Endpoint then you can connect it directly to the endpoint and bypass the pc.
I see what you’re asking. Tbe answer is yes. If your DAC can act as a Roon endpoint then you CaN bypass the PC, and the PC is just a remote controller for the core-endpoint connection.
Yes. To remove a PC you need to not have any kind of usb connection between it and the dac. Aka, you need a “streamer” to remove the physical connection to a PC. If your PC is plugged into your dac it is the “source”
If you want to experiment with streaming to Roon endpoints, the Raspberry Pi 4 with Ropieee is a low cost way to begin. And then like all other things audio you can see how far the rabbit hole goes…
