Allnic Audio & ZL Technologies thread

Just wanted to post a quick follow-up to my 1st 100 hours into the amp impression. You will get a consistent black background with RCA inputs even at max volume. With XLR input and XLR output, only when you near max out like above 15 in the volume pot, you will pick up a faint radio noise when using the Onkyo A800 (32ohms). When I switch my Onkyo to the SE output, I can only hear the faint radio noise maxing the tube amp all the way, everything below that volume is a black background. When using the D8000 Pro LE, I need to max it out all the way to hear a faint radio noise, everything below that volume is a black background. I cannot confirm if this is only me because of my XLR interconnect cable, but it is not a big deal since you can only hear the faint radio noise at max volume. Any volume before hitting max, I can’t hear the faint radio noise. Still going to be using XLR since it provides more juice for my higher ohms headphones and D8000 Pro LE and because of the extra juice, the music just feels more lively and seems to have bass. I also always stay under 15 with about all my headphones, so I don’t need to worry about the above information. Just thought this would be cool to share.

Cables: Audience OHNO XLR Cables and Level 6.2 ABSOLUTE RCA cables.

Official sample finished! I’m ready … Although I don’t know how much it’ll cost yet lol

Still being tested though

Finally, finished burning in the Allnic HPA-5000XL with 353 current hours on it from stress testing the Mysphere 3.2 headphones (last headphone I was using before it finished burning in). I don’t know what’s going on, but… this is the best I ever heard of the ATH-L3000. My ATH-L3000 got a nice buff in clarity and yet, the music still sounds more rich and pleasing to the ear (that’s from my DAC). The key changes compared to when I first got it are soundstage, clarity, bass punch, details pop up more like some backup vocals just stand out more, or maybe I can’t unhear what I heard from the Raal and Mysphere. One huge change from memory while burning in the amp is probably near the 280 - 300 hours I want to say. And this change is probably why I am enjoying the Mysphere way more than I thought I would and it’s the holographic soundstage. From memory, the only thing I liked about the Allnic HPA 5000XL, in the beginning, was the clarity and the transparency. The soundstage was beginning to push for more of a “3D” kind of stage where I started noticing instruments started playing near the back of my head above the 100 hours. Then, I want to say around the 200 hours is when the Allnic HPA-5000XL got better at separating the instruments because I do remember the stage felt like it was getting a little bigger and the reason it felt like that is that the instruments sounded more stretched apart and I have gotten better imaging on the instruments. Then last month in July around 280 - 300 hours I want to say, the Allnic HPA-5000XL became more engaging where now the soundstage becomes pretty unique compared to other amps I heard. I went from where I thought I had a frontal image of the musicians to now having images of the musicians around me. It really makes me feel like I am where the performer should be and that main performer is playing like inside me and everything else was playing around me like I was actually was onstage and part of that band (which I probably didn’t do a good job explaining, but that is how I feel). I know that sounds like BS and honestly, I feel ridiculous describing it this way. But I really feel like that’s how I remember the change and how the Allnic HPA-5000XL sounds. It’s another one of those cases where hearing is just believing. I remember playing with the Supratek balance control while wearing headphones to find a purpose why I want to put it somewhere besides the middle and know I was putting the music in front of me. Now, I’ve got the “what stage?, I am the stage” kinda feel.

I think I actually just lost my marbles, but that’s ok, cause music sounds really good right now lol. My current favorite setup is the usual ROON Rock - Intel NUC 7i7 > EMM Labs NS1 > [AES] Mojo Audio Mystique EVO B4B 21 > [Audience OHNO XLR] Custom 45/6SN7 Tube Only Supratek Cabernet DHT > [Level 6.2 ABSOLUTE RCA] Allnic HPA-5000XL > ATH-L3000.

As much as I like to say the Onkyo A800 is my favorite headphone, I have to admit that the best headphone for this current setup is the ATH-L3000. The ATH-L3000 is a warm and romantic headphone where it doesn’t sound natural per say, but it sounds really freaking good. My favorite sounds is the electric guitar and the female vocals. I think the midrange is incredible, not the Mysphere level, but its own sweet flavor. Bass on it is fantastic, mostly on it’s mid-bass where it’s quick and tight. Not as quick as the Raal SR1a where it decay too quick, but I think it’s the perfect amount of decay so you can still feel that “oomph” in its bass. The ATH-L3000 is a warm balance headphone that I enjoy. The B4B 21 adds more warmth and rich sound to the ATH-L3000 while still providing an impressive amount of details and more noticeable microdetails. Then the Allnic HPA-5000XL does not add its own flavor, but instead, provides a clean and transparent sound. It also changes the presentation of the music making it more immersive and instead of expanding the soundstage, the music just sinks into the abyss and music is just playing around me. That really helps the ATH-L3000 as the ATH-L3000 is known for having small venue soundstage, but excellent imaging. The Allnic HPA-5000XL just removed its small soundstage and replaced it with a more holographic stage and improved its strength of imaging. Can’t forget the Supratek 45 preamp improving vocals making them sound more romantic and organic on the ATH-L3000, which is freaking awesome because for some reason vocals will always stand out on the ATH-L3000 no matter what. I think it’s just a classic ATH headphone thing where they like putting vocals as the main star of the show. Even though it’s not realistic like the Mysphere, it’s a more sweet and romantic approach that I just really enjoy it even though it’s not realistic.

So yeah, with my current setup, my favorite headphone is the ATH-L3000 on this setup. I think every component strengthens the ATH-L3000 its best features (mid-range, better bass punch, imaging, and improved vocals), improves its clarity, and even fixes its weaknesses like it’s soundstage.

This was supposed to be just a thought dump since I wanted to write a simple pros and cons experience this weekend. AS always, I just ended up writing too long. One thought leads to another and now I got this essay… I will highlight the strength and weakness of the Allnic HPA-5000XL next Allnic post I make and that’s probably it on me talking about the Allnic HPA-5000XL amp. It’s not going to be that good post since I don’t have too many experience, especially home experience with other headphone amps, but nothing really blew me away like the Allnic HPA-5000XL except the Viva Tube Amp, but honestly for a different reason like the bass wow factors. I still want to say the Allnic HPA-5000XL is still my favorite amp, since it’s just easier to see myself using this amp in everyday situations for casual listening when I just want to listen to music in the background and it’s technical enough for critical listening for me. Crazy that I still have room for improvement on the amp like the Allnic power cable and buying another good XLR cable for interconnects. Final thought of the night, the Allnic HPA-5000XL is pretty cool amp, hope you guys are able to hear one fully burn-in.

Kind of unfortunate that the 3000gt is now discontinued. I hope that is some indication they might be working on a new model

That would be cool if Allnic started making more headphone amps again. The direction I seen with a lot of Allnic new equipment is mostly OTL/OCL so I am not sure if they will ever go back to their old design. The latest invention is the DAC, so maybe an amp might be the next step after they are done making their own tubes.

This will probably be my last update on the Allnic HPA-5000XL. Just quickly going over the strength and weakness for this amp for my experience in the last 7 months. I have burned in currently 366 hours and all burn-in was during listening hours (so I listen to the whole burn-in process). It’s actually more than 366 hours because there are some days I forgot to count, but it’s at least over 366 hours. I only had to change 1 tube during the whole time of owning it and that was because the tube was defective when I first got the amp. Of course, the tube was under warranty so I got the replacement tube for free from my dealer.

*Deep Appreciation for the Road of 350+ Hours of Burn-In

  • Resolution is consistant no matter where the volume is at. From low volume to high volume, the Allnic HPA-5000XL has a consistent resolution no matter what kind of session you are in the mood for. When I want to get loud with the ATH-L3000 for some more bass slam and rumble to a low-level listening session with my Sennheiser HD250 Linear 1, the Allnic HPA-5000XL stays flexible in its resolution no matter what kind of volume you want to go for. It’s really headphone-dependent as well because there are some headphones that can’t take loud volume well because of bass clipping. But if your headphones can handle the loud volume, the Allnic HPA-5000XL will make sure the sound won’t distort in a loud setting.
  • Immersive soundstage for my headphones. My ATH-L3000 and Onkyo A800 are known for their small - median size soundstage. The Allnic HPA-5000XL doesn’t enlarge the soundstage to me. Instead, it exaggerates my headphone by having a more immersive feel and makes it feels like the music is playing around me to the point where I feel like I’m on stage with the performers vs. being in the crowd. On good recordings, it’s really amazing hearing one instrument play on my left ear and echo to the right ear.
  • Good bass control. Help buff my headphones strengths like the ATH-L3000 and Mysphere mid-bass punch and my Onkyo A800 bass have more grip and control. If you are looking for some nice fat bass like a 300B tube, probably won’t get that from the Allnic HPA-5000XL. You will instead get a nice buff to the bass punch.
  • A clean and transparent sound output that will be appreciated in the long run. If you are looking for that dirty tube sound, you are not going to get it from this headphone amp.
  • I say a unique texture in the music that’s pretty hard to describe besides calling it the “Allnic House Sound”. So if you use some critical listening, you can hear the difference between a clean solid-state amp(my B22 at the time) and a clean Allnic Amp(mine is the HPA-5000XL).
  • The HPA-5000XL can unlock the speed for your headphone. I remember I had the ATH-AD2000 and that was some crazy listening sessions with the HPA-5000XL. Not fast as my Raal SR1a, but it got pretty crazy. My fastest headphone now that I can use on the Allnic HPA-5000XL is probably the ATH-L3000 and it works well even with inorganic music speed.
  • Tube Chimney that keeps the dust away. The tube amp still gets dusty, but not the tubes, and I really appreciate that a lot.
  • Tube Bias meter. I can see if there is anything wrong with my tubes if the meter is not blue. I can adjust the meter with a small screwdriver. If the meter does not go blue after adjustments, I now know I have to replace a tube. It makes troubleshooting the chain a lot easier because if it’s blue, I know my Allnic HPA-5000XL amp is working perfectly, at least on the tubes side.

Some Weaknesses

  • There will be some headphones that you will wish you had more headroom, even when using the AES inputs. A lot of the popular headphones are pretty hungry or take a lot of power to drive them like the AKG K340 for example. I don’t own any of the modern power-hungry headphones, but I do own some vintage. With my Sennheiser HD250 Linear 1 600 Ohms. You have to turn the volume way past 50% for it to sound loud. This could be easily fixed by adding a pre-amp into the chain. When I added the Supratek DHT to my chain, headroom is no longer an issue and I have plenty of room to work with regarding volume. I only go up to 40% with my Sennheiser HD250 Linear 1 600 Ohms and about 40% on my preamp.
  • I can see people craving more resolution when comparing this amp to the big boys. A memory of the Viva amp comes to my mind of how much resolution and bass are more in my face while the Allnic details are a little more subtle that will require some critical listening to truly appreciate the sound it makes in my opinion.

Ending Notes:
It doesn’t really color your music, it’s a transparent amp. Meaning your flavor will most likely come from the preamp, DAC, or both. But the tubes that the HPA-5000XL contains will add texture to your music, very noticeable on bass. The main thing that the Allnic HPA-5000XL amp will do is change the presentation depending on how well the headphones and HPA-5000XL amp synergize together. I say that because there are some headphones like the Mezes 99 Classic that will still sound like a closed-back headphone soundstage, meanwhile, my ATH-W10VTG will have an immersive soundstage. I think angle driver headphones like the classic ATH-W10VTG and L3000 work really well with the Allnic HPA-5000XL amp for an immersive soundstage. Other headphones that work really well for the immersive soundstage are open-back and semi-open-back headphones. So if you got a headphone that you really enjoy the soundstage, I say try them out with the Allnic HPA-5000XL for its “unique” presentation and see how well they mesh well together.

I kinda cheated during the middle of the burn-in process because I added a Supratek 45 tube preamp to the chain. I personally believe because Allnic is mostly known for their speaker amps before they started headphone amp, they probably designed the headphone amp pretty near their speaker amp design. The reason I said this out loud is because the Allnic HPA-5000XL headphone amp sounds really freaking good with the Supratek 45 tube preamp lol. When I added the Supratek 45 tube preamp to the chain, the resolution went up, the bass got tighter, the soundstage got added depth, and I added more tube flavor into the chain. The Allnic HPA-5000XL work so perfectly with the Supratek 45 tube pre-amp, I can’t see myself using this amp without a preamp anymore. The preamp fixed all of HPA-5000XL issue of needing more volume headroom and adding more clarity and soundstage depth into the chain. After adding a preamp to the chain I went from using like 70-80% of volume headroom to 40-50% on my hungriest headphone, the AKG K340. I know it’s not recommended adding a preamp to a headphone chain because it’s pretty much a waste of money if you are not using it in a speaker chain and could give a worse synergy vs. without it. But I say go for it if you have a tube preamp lying around for some extra flavoring in the chain. If you ask me if the Allnic HPA-5000XL is worth it, I say it depends on how hungry your headphone is. If you ask me if the Allnic HPA-5000XL is worth it and you have a good preamp, I say it’s worth it because now you really don’t have any negative and it’s a well-balanced amp overall that doesn’t really color the chain. The only reason you will most likely look for something else is to upgrade your overall resolution or you want to add some flavor to your chain, or you are probably not into this immersive soundstage and want something more realistic where the performer is in front.

Overall, Allnic-HPA5000XL is a great headphone amp. It won’t wow you in the short span of listening, but you will gain an appreciation of the headphone amp over time. Took me like probably 7 months of burn-in to understand that this headphone amp is truly special. I had my moments of FOMO for sure. Then I was able to satisfy my curiosity about other amps through local meets and audio shows. Going back to Allnic HPA-5000XL gave me the same feeling of coming back home. It’s a nice comforting feeling.

This is the last Allnic-HPA5000XL update post from me unless something breaks (which I hope doesn’t happen lol) or maybe a new power cable. I may give an update here if I got a hungry headphone coming in. My next headphone I got coming in very soon is the Sus. A headphone amp thread isn’t complete without knowing if it run the Sus, so I will probably give an update on that maybe next month if I remember. For now, happy listening!

Favorites headphones with the Allnic HPA-5000XL no order:

  • ATH-L3000 (great imaging already plus the Allnic soundstage is incredible),
  • Mysphere 3.2 (best soundstage in the collection and probably my favorite soundstage overall from what I heard),
  • Onkyo A800 (bass have minimum bleeding in the midrange while preserving a satisfying bass for me and still got a decent size immersive soundstage),
  • Sennheiser HD250 Linear 1 EP 600 Ohm (great soundstage, but a more studio-neutral clean sound output)
  • Sony-MA900 (airy soundstage like the Mysphere 3.2, but not as wide. Still pretty special with the Allnic HPA-5000XL)

Other headphones that I like not because of the soundstage, but because they sound really clean vs when I first had them on cheaper amps:

  • Beyerdynamic 770 Pro 250 Ohm,
  • AKG K340,
  • Sennheiser HD580 Jubilee,
  • ATH-W10VTG

The amps and headphone chain couldn’t save the Mezes 99 classic or AKG 240 EP sextett for me. I think my 240 EP might be defective because I could never get them to sound good and the Mezes 99 classic just always sounds not good to me.

1 regret is that I couldn’t hear what the Sony MDR-CD3000, ATH-AD2000, and Final Audio D8000 Pro LE sound like on the fully burn in Allnic HPA-5000XL amp. I don’t like buying headphones that I already sold, but I may give that exception to the Sony MDR-CD3000 since that soundstage was pretty amazing from memory. Wonder what kind of soundstage the Allnic will give to the Sony MDR-CD3000.

Side Side Note that is not related to the amp: I had fun listening to all my headphones no matter what price range it was. I think the biggest shock was how fun and good the Beyerdynamic 770 Pro 250 Ohm and AKG 340 sound on my chain. I want to say that’s probably because the Evo B4B21 DAC is giving a lot of “fun” factor to the chain. I think the Mystique Evo B4B 21 and the Allnic HPA-5000XL a great factors for a fun and immersive experience.

My Chain: ROON Rock - Intel NUC 7i7 > EMM Labs NS1 > [AES] Mojo Audio Mystique EVO B4B 21 > Custom 45/6SN7 Tube Only Supratek Cabernet DHT > [RCA] Allnic HPA-5000XL > Headphones

LOL…I completely understand this description :+1: It’ s the same exact sensation I’m getting w/ My Shiny Eyes and Pasithea combo and it’s the liveliest most fun and enjoyable presentation I’ve ever experienced w/ HP’s. Great job on the write up :pinched_fingers: I genuinely smiled and enjoyed reading that.

Craving for a 2nd opinion on the Allnic HPA-5000XL, I thought about going to the Asian forums to see how they feel about the Allnic HPA-5000XL. I came across this short YouTube video of the guy using a Totaldac setup (not sure which one) > Allnic HPA-5000XL (XLR) > Hifiman Susvara (XLR).

To sum the video up, he mentions that the Allnic HPA-5000XL for some reason reminds him of the Riviera (don’t mention what model or why), but prefers the Allnic HPA-5000XL high extensions which he likes for the violins and other string instruments. He also likes how the low ends sound on the Allnic HPA-5000XL. The one thing he doesn’t like is that the treble is a little bit brighter, but he can see that can be beneficial depending on the genre and instrument. Overall, he seems to like the Allnic HPA-5000XL on his first impression, which is cool to see for me.

This YouTube video beat me to the punch and I know MON already said it on the other threads, but just wanted to confirm it with myself (getting my Sus today, just patiently waiting for the Fedex man :slightly_smiling_face:). So, to answer the very important question to any headphone amp thread, can the Allnic HPA-5000XL run a Susvara? The answer is looking like yes and he is only going up like 50-60% volume.

Side note: I know this guy got banned from other forums, but I’ll still take this opinion since I most likely will never hear the Total DAC/Allnic HPA-5000XL combination. But this opinion makes me wonder if the Allnic HPA-5000XL might be very picky on DAC since you will be heavily dependent on the source and preamp (if you are using one) for the sound flavor in the chain. I don’t think the Allnic HPA-5000XL treble is high, but I am using a Mojo Audio Mystique Evo B4B 21 as my DAC. Also looking at MON shitlist on the Riviera, I don’t see how you can make the comparison with the Riviera amp and the Allnic amp, but I also never heard the Riviera amp myself. The way MON describes it in his shitlist is, “More of a rich and fun amp with a more relaxed focus that maintains strong energy and directness despite its tuning and characteristics, although depending on the tube swap. Just lush, engaging, and capable.” I honestly don’t get that feeling from the Allnic amp. My chain does sound rich and fun, but I honestly believe it’s coming from my Evo B4B 21 DAC because when I upgraded the DAC, the rich and fun sound gained a new level in my audio chain while the Allnic HPAS-5000XL was still burning in during that time. This is why having a 2nd DAC is good for a 2nd opinion, but honestly do not have a very good reason for a 2nd DAC just to test out my amp.

Still, I think it’s a neat little 1:27 video of a quick impression on the Totaldac setup (not sure which one) > Allnic HPA-5000XL (XLR) > Hifiman Susvara (XLR) chain. I will give him a thumbs up in the video for that :+1:

That’s true of a lot of amps I wouldn’t recommend for the Susvara, including the DNA and EC amps.
Having said that I have not tried that amp with the Susvara specifically.

Yeah, I do remember reading about it (don’t remember if its this forum or the other forum), but they were making a comparison of the HE-6 vs the Susvara in terms of running them in different amps. I think they said the HE-6, you just need to worry about volume and they can get it to a nice volume, it should be near its full potential. Vs. the Susvara where even if you do have volume, you still got to worry about bass extension and something else (don’t remember) that the amp will provide to the Susvara.

I think it can yes. It’s actually fantastic for the he6 as well lol. I do think that there are amps that are better for the susvara, but for the price, the 5000xl is actually pretty great

It is I’d say, not exactly in tonality but overall presentation and technicality imo

Personally I can’t say I’m reminded of the Riviera in sound, but I never spend a ton of time going back and forth between the two when I had both at the same time lol. I could see how depending on the totaldac model though, they could draw some similarities perhaps

While I would agree that getting more power is a bit more important on the he6 than susvara, I think both headphones are pretty demanding on quality, susvara moreso

Also, while I’m in the allnic thread, the L-7000 CI is damn good lol. I’m going to see if I can get in one of their OTL to compare

I’ve seen people rave about the L-9000 and L-10000, but your really getting up there in price for the latter.

That’s good to know it can at least run the Sus. I mainly bought the Susvara to compare the midrange to the Mysphere 3.2 and to add to the collection I guess since people are buzzing about a new Susvara 2.0 in the near future. I enjoy the ATH-L3000 midrange as well but for a different reason. I listened to the Susvara before on a pretty nice setup but didn’t really carefully listen to the midrange and was more focused on the resolution at that time. The Mysphere is a really good headphone (currently favorite sounding headphone, but can’t say favorite headphone since its too picky on the recording). Glad there were a lot of people here who recommended that headphone. Really broadened my horizon on what to look for in a headphone.

I was actually considering getting the HE-6 at one point but wanted a 4 screw late production unit for a specific bass sound and mostly to just add to the collection since it was a rarer unicorn. At this point though, the HE-6 as a whole is a rare headphone, so I might pick up a 6 screw sometime in the journey ahead (not near future). Also, one of the first Allnic HPA-5000 (not XL) review from Headphone Guru mention that the HE-6 (6 screw I think) and the Allnic HPA-5000 was a magical combo that she recommended.

That’s good to know.

That will be a good read if you are able to get one to compare. I would love to try an Allnic speaker setup one day, but would probably wait a year or 2 on a decent speaker setup (which is getting delayed again. I was supposed to buy a decent speaker for my next step, but instead spent like $7K this month on buying the Raal, Mysphere, and now Susvara, but think it was worth it since now it broadens my horizon on what kind of sound I really like).

Would you say it’s consistent with their “house sound”?

Tbh, I just want an all allnic chain for hps, but I don’t really want to “step down” from the crayon. And who knows how it’ll synergize with the yh5k, though judging from how you liked the d8kp off it that could be a good sign.

Been in contact with arranging a 9000, we’ll see lol

Depends, yes and no. It’s definitely sweeter and more forgiving than what I expected, denser than what I expected, and presentation wise it’s more organic than what I expected. One of those “it makes things sound better” preamps. I have a feeling the 9000 will be different lol

@M0N just noticed you put the allnic cables on your shit list, didn’t know you had them in, but it’s cool to see! I honestly wasn’t sure about the aes since I didn’t have anything to compare, but I did get the feeling it was technically and spatially capable.

You didn’t get to try the zl3000 and mu8r rca/xlr?

Nope, only the mu7r and zl5000, got a reasonable price on a few of them with the l7000. Honestly didn’t even know there was a mu8r at this point lol
