Know? No! Some educated guesses, lots of reading, talking to Andy at Backert and other folks who’s judgement I trust. All they make a preamps. In the end though, you’ve got to pull the trigger especially on gear that you know you’re buying at a price that will allow for flipping easily. It becomes almost like a free trial period, or at least I treat it as such.
When you’re making big jumps it’s also much easier to make up your mind on whether it’s worth keeping or not. If you’re splitting hairs, then it’s got to be justified by some other metric. They’re also in my back yard so easy to deal with for tweaking should I want that.
To this very day THE one thing I’ve purchased that made me question my sanity as the cost is basically equivalent to a component, lol but moving into that range of cable, it’s facilitated the evaluation of everything I’ve ever connected to the chain since. Things are simply more obvious, things that I’d have to strain to hear previously, are just more evident.
Just got a deal on these guys. Needed another repair for the living room setup. From a wonderful local audiophile. He let me try out his pair of original LCD 2 50th off the production line.
ignore my messy trunk I just did a big camping trip last week and have been neglecting on cleaning
These are really special cans, for the price they are incredible!
So far i like them both on the OOR and in the Quicksilver, btw the Quicksilver keeps surprising me, it is impressive how everything i throw at it sounds amazing
I have put around 10 hours on the HE1000SE so far, so these are only preliminary impressions, but what i can say for sure is that both are special headphones which deserve a place in any collection.
The Tungsten is warmer with more note weight while the HE1000SE is more analytical and thin, that is not to say the HE1000SE is super cold or super thin, this is just compared to the Tungsten.
I feel like the HE1000SE delivers more detail, but this is probably the result of a brighter tuning bringing the detail in the upper end more to your face though.
One VERY interesting thing for me while listening to the HE1000SE is that while it has a lot more treble than my preference, it manages to sound smooth and pleasant in the top end, i feel like i am experiencing really high quality treble for the first time with these. As for the Tungsten’s top end, it is perfect in its own way, cymbal crashes are the most natural i have ever heard and i tend to want to raise the volume often because of that super smooth treble.
Overall, if i had to pick only one for my collection it would be the Tungsten, not because it is better objectively which i don’t think is the case, but because of the more organic and weightier sound it delivers which fits my personal preference. Having said that, i have a friend who is desperately trying to convince me to sell him the HE1000SE, but i am really not ready to stop enjoying these.
Honestly i don’t think one can go wrong with either, such incredible cans!
Thanks!! I’m told they were a nice pair of amperex tubes. Didnt get any other details on them but I’m happy with the sounds so no reason to look too far into it for now
Maybe I’ll open the box up in the future to look but who knows
Since it’s about the music. I’ve been completing albums and simply like having the physical media. When it’s all equal, I just buy a cheap CD instead of downloading as I know which version I’m getting, especially for pre 2000 CDs.
Wanted to pass on that I bought 500 of these sleeves a long while back and have been slowly getting rid of all the plastic shells. As you can see it saves on space, basically a 75% reduction in volume needed to store and about the same in weight reduction.
Bought this at Emily Haines’s (singer of metric) brother’s record store right before a free metric concert last week. Didn’t know the relationship till then and this is my regular record store lol
That’s really cool. I lump Emily Haines and Damon Albarn together, not because of any musical similarities, but from a quality perspective, because they are so good at creating perfect indie-pop songs again and again and again that they must fart in melody.
