The Talos is originally what I was going to get, but the guy who was talking to me about the order said that wasn’t possible. Something about the cable being significantly thicker than the 2.5mm connector, lol.
That is true, it’s a honking thick (thicc?) cable. It kind of surprised me, it’s like a garden hose for your headphones! Not really, but there is a lot of copper there for sure.
These things are monsters lol, but probably the smallest footprint (emphasis on footprint lol) ported 15" subs you can buy.
Also bought some spring isolation feet for putting the speakers on top of the subs (and removed some springs so they would compress a bit). Unfortunately I’ve only had enough time to put the subs in place and test if they work (which they definitely work, I’ll have to be careful with these things lol). For now I plan on running the speakers full range and having the subs fill in at around 40hz and below. I may also invest in a minidsp flex and umik2 just to correct the subs below my speakers -3db point and make the subs easily mutable for nighttime listening and switching to headphones (without having to get up and turn the subs off).
Anyways, just a bit of an update from me. Hope everyone is having a great week!
Yay, I bought 1 UX-245 and I finally have a pair! It all started because I was buying near NOS grey glass RCA 6SN7GT. I randomly ask the guy, “you by chance have a UX245 you are willing to let go”. He told me yeah since he use to have a 45 tube amp, but switch to a 46 amp so he doesn’t use his 45 tube collection anymore. He had a couple of UX-245 but most of them were near the end of life or cosmetic damage (loose mica rattle in the tube). I took the plunge and bought a “decently” used UX-245 and YEEEEEEES! Idk if it’s the new toy syndrome of finally completing the pair or what, but using a couple test tracks and it’s making me smile ear to ear . I’m just happy it works with no issue so far. Haven’t tried the grey glass RCA 6SN7GT tubes yet, but I think I will seal everything back in the storage case. I want to make sure to save enough juice for all of them when I finally am able to afford my “dream” power amp for my speaker setup.
For now, I am just going to enjoy this 1 night of happiness while using the Mysphere 3.2 before sealing the UX-245 back into the storage.
Don’t know if this is normal or more cosmetic flaws, but the UX-245 tubes are facing the same way instead of facing to each other like the other 45 tubes I am used to.
This is one of the grey glass RCA 6SN7GT tubes I gotten. I will probably put a pair in my preamp after maybe a month of getting used to the UX-245 sound and I won’t plugged those until after I purchase and get my power amp.
I think I want to get used the Globe 45 more before I get my new power amp. When I can finally afford the new power amp, I want to hear the changes of sound slowly in my system since the power amp I am planning to get is really transparent.
Congratulations on the beautiful new Subwoofer @orrman Obviously you will enjoy its performance best in your own environment and w/ your own listening pleasure, if i may though; In my own experience over the years i have found using the subwoofer crawl an essential part of placement in my own rooms. It’s a bit of a time consuming procedure but has paid off immensely for me w/ my 2 channel set-ups. Get an extension chord, long connections and temporarily set up your subwoofer in the spot where you have found your listening chair to work best in combination w/ your speakers. Use some bass test tracks and a small assortment of songs w/ lower end performance you are familiar w/ during your crawling sessions.
Clear your room of every non-essential piece of furniture possible and simply crawl around to the best of your abilities for a few sessions both listening and “feeling” for what seems the best output of lower frequencies in your room. If the annoyance of doing this doesn’t get the better of you i promise that if you put the effort in you WILL be rewarded with a sweet center image of maximum possible bass output in your listening spot
3 of my 7 subwoofers have down-firing passive radiators and I have found for those REL units in particular my own personal preference is to de-couple them from the floor best possible. This simply “sounds” best in my opinion, minimizing the transfer of bass output and vibration into the floor and what to my ear sounds like allowing for the transfer of power more appropriately into bass i can better “hear and feel” into the room. YMMV spending good money to do this, i did it and it’s my own personal preference. Happy listening and again congratulations on the acquisition of such a nice subwoofer
Their recommendation is generic, in my smaller room the sub wound up in the corner both per their recommendation AND per the crawl, in the large room it’s a completely different story, the subs are placed where they sound best in my seating oval, only the crawl was able to show me how the room dimensions affected the bass nodes. In my office the crawl was absolutely essential, the sub l0cation has nothing to do w/ recommendations and corners, it all has to do with seating arrangement in a near field desktop environment, that was the room that made me a genuine believer of the value of the crawl. Decoupling from the floor is dependent on what you value, more bass through your floorboards or impact in the air and a tighter imaging . Again, we all have preferences, In the end, it really is about what sounds best in YOUR room and to your tastes. Happy listening. Damned fine sub.
