Got a second Monoprice XL rack to put next to my other one. Now the front of my room looks a little less messy and I have the Tyrs side by side for L and R haha. The extra space on top of the right rack may be where I put a turntable, but for now I’m happy with how everything looks.
Also bought some furniture sliders for the racks so they don’t leave deep dents in my carpet and allow me to move the racks without having to take off the equipment (just unplug cables, which is arguably the most tedious part lol).
Now I just need some room treatment, a sub (or two), and maybe some new speakers haha.
Hope everyone is having a nice week, happy listening!
That looks really nice, those racks are a very solid deal Did you ever give up some impressions in the Klipsch thread on how the speakers sound w/ your set-up? i need to go look, i forget easily.
I agree with the guy above on that is a nice rack. If you don’t mind, would love some impressions of the Tyrs amp with speakers if you didn’t post them yet.
Thank you for the compliments! As for impressions of the RP600Ms in my room/setup, I haven’t shared any yet. They’re great speakers though and the fact that I’ve kept them for as long as I have is really a testament to their performance and ability to scale (and for such a relatively low price).
The biggest reason why I haven’t given my in-depth impressions yet though, is because of my room. I know all speakers are heavily influenced by the rooms they’re placed in, but since I’m in such a small space (almost a perfect cube lol 11’X10’X9’) I feel like my in-depth impressions would be more colored by my room than how the speakers actually perform. Another thing of note is the RP600Ms are verrry picky with placement and the kind of room they’re placed in. If the speakers were a sealed cabinet design or designed specifically for small rooms, I’d probably feel more comfortable giving my in-depth impressions with my room as it is now. But I do plan on getting some treatment once I have the money for it. I’ll probably start with some corner traps and a couple panels for early reflections, at which point I may feel more comfortable going in-depth with my thoughts.
Regardless of all that, I still love these speakers and consider them a bargain for the $400 I paid for them. Are there better (more expensive) speakers out there that’d sound better in my room? 1000%. And maybe by the end of the year or sometime next year I’ll have some different speakers that can bring out the performance that I know my system is capable of, but for now I’m happy with the RP600Ms as I work on building up my room/system.
Edit: To briefly answer the question though I think the Tyrs are amazing with the RP600Ms. Better speed/transients, punch, refined highs, and surprisingly better low volume performance than the aegir monos. I won’t say anything in regards to staging since that’s where I think my room makes the biggest impact, but overall the Tyrs are a clear step above the aegir monos in performance imo.
Very good answer, yep i agree with you. I’m pretty sure they sound real good w/ those amps. I’m genuinely appreciative of what these speakers do, i have gotten much enjoyment from my own pair and yes, they perform differently depending on the space they are in, i have absolutely experienced this in my own varied rooms over the years. Happy listening always buddy
If you ever want budget-friendly feet for your racks that will sit on your sliders, these Audiocrast feet ($25 for four) come with an M8 screw that is compatible with Monoprice racks.
I do like the chassis and wish it was an option available from the beginning.
No issues with the upgrade process. The queueing process worked nice, within a day I got an email saying they were ready for me and provided an RA# and location to ship to. They sent an email when they took possession of the DAC and let me know they would need it for a few days to switch everything over to the new chassis, test, and burn it in. A couple days later I got an email with a tracking number… All in all it was like 11 days without the DAC and the majority of that was travel time.
No, the DAC sounds the same after warming up. I tried the NOS feature, and meh, I like it better disabled - aka the way it always was and just should remain lol At least with my current gears and preferences.
I put this last for a reason - I do not know if I’d do it again. All I really was after was just a colorway change and the slimmer chassis. Well I got that but … I also now have a transformer hum that I did not have before and it sickens me tbh. I can hear the hum across the room even but its mechanical I don’t hear it when music is playing. Before you all go sayen it is your power, get a DC filter and or a power plant, I’m going to say shushhh… None of my other gear does this, it has never been a problem including with this DAC. Moving other gear into its slot , they all are fine. It is this piece alone, and only after its return.
I am going to let it ride a few days over the weekend see if it settles and then I’m going to have to open a ticket with Schiit and hopefully get an RMA# and then have to ship it off again. And hope they will not just tell me to buy a HUM-X or blame it on my power… (like their FAQ says (my DAC has a hum). So I’m not looking forward to this process or expense of the shipping back and forth… Hopefully it will get resolved.
So again there’s something to the saying - if it aint broke don’t fix it…
Wow, that sucks, I’m sorry to hear that (no pun here).
I would definitely contact Schiit, that’s more than disappointing… I have no discernible hum in mine (old style case), and it seems you didn’t either previously.
Can you open the DAC up and make sure all the bolts holding things down are nice and snug? It’s a long shot but maybe just maybe it’s that simple a fix🤷♂️
No technical suggestions here, only posting to support my brother. This sucks and I’d rank the excitement->disappointment experience as somewhere between a bad colonoscopy and losing a passport in a foreign country.
Hope things work out for the better… or maybe it’s a sign to upgrade again…
Assuming they reuse the transformer this is the most likely culprit.
All transformers hum to a point, DC always gets blamed, but it’s not always the culprit. How audible the hum is depends on a lot of things, but mostly how it’s mounted and what’s coming out of the wall (higher wall voltages can result in hum) and how big it is relative to requirements. If the transformer hasn’t changed there aren’t a lot of other likely options.
Thanks, I am not opposed to that. I’ll take a look to see if I can do it in a manner that is undetectable in the event that I would still need to send it back to Schiit. The hum does change tone and volume as I press around on the chassis, but never is it silent.
It was not really an upgrade more a refitting but I get you and yes, I’ve been looking at alternatives as if this is a sign to try something different. My fun in the hobby comes from the actual listening tbh, not the ongoing quest and hunt for new gear so I do need a prod at times to explore as I tend to find something I like and then stick with it.
I did not have any hum or complaints, no. I sort of wonder if it is the chassis difference and that maybe they use different transformers that are slimmer with the new yggys, and these older ones that were used when they built with the larger chassis are now just to close to the metal superstructure of the slimmer chassis. It could be too just the fact that it got shipped across the country and back, or that just moving components from one chassis to another unsettled something, or even that one decided to go out coincidentally who knows. It’s a bummer but no loss of life, limb, or liberty so, I’ll work through it. …just sucks.
They do - they just swap the contents of the yggy you send in into a new chassis. the only thing “new” is the front panel.
I can assure you they don’t. The Yggy is a one board solution with the expansion cards being daughter cards. The transformers are both bolted/soldered onto the board and it’s not uncommon for the bolts to come loose. As a matter of fact one of the transformers on my Yggy ripped off during shipping because the bolts had come loose and a good THWACK from a UPS driver caused the hunk of transformer to literally rip from the board.
