One of the worst burns i got was when a solder blob plopped onto my wet sponge. I thought i could squish it down, why not that is the cold, wet cleaning sponge so it obviously cooled. Nope! And it took a bit for the brain to register. Right on the tip of my finger. The best part is to sleep i had to cool it by dipping it in cold water, that is until i fell asleep and the cup tipped onto my bed. Not a very pleasant wake up, or trying to sleep on the puddle after.
I have a habit of picking up pcbs to reposition while forgetting that I just was soldering on the bit my fingers are now using.
My big brain moment was just having soldered a aluminium-core PCB that was sitting on a hot-plate after just having taken of the protection glove to just sit the thing over there…
Knock on an anti static mat for me here… I’ve never gotten a bad burn. Stupid little ones yeah (mostly from using my hand to hold what I’m soldering rather than a clamp) but those are to be expected.
This one goes out to you, @Souldriver, and all you other Spuds out there! ![]()
I wonder how long that candy bar lasts, mine is still in the box ![]()
I took a bite of mine and it was all sugar and whatever they use to give it shape. I’m pretty sure they last forever.
Congrats on the Borealis that’s one of my favorite headphones. I wish there was more stock but it’s just a side project for the guy who makes them and he’s also spending time developing some upgraded versions of the borealis and australis. The Borealis on the Tyrs is really good. It’s better then all of the ZMFs I’ve tried which I suppose is sort of a low bar although it does lack a bit of that sub bass extension as you mentioned. To me it sounds like a warmer Utopia with less detail. I sold a lot of my planars because of the Aurorus Audio headphones and also because of trying things like the sr1b. Hope you enjoy them and am curious what you think once the second Tyr returns from Schiit.
FWIW I found the Tyrs to have noise issues when connected to a tube preamp. Especially when using the single ended inputs on the Tyrs. When I had the LTA preamp I ended up sticking a freya+ in after the LTA and before the Tyrs to act as a single ended to balance conversion in the solid state buffer mode and also as a way to attenuate the signal from the preamp. Kind of a silly thing to have to do but it made the noise floor almost 0 with that preamp. Even now with solid state everything in my chain I get a little bit of noise floor but only on sensitive headphones like the borealis or other easy to drive dynamics. It’s very faint though and certainly not audible when music is playing.
Speaking of “Bori”, just got them repaired and eager to listen to them in their true form. Don’t know about australis since i’m not a basshead, they were in stock last time i checked though.
Got some feet from Herbie’s Audio Lab called “Tenderfoot”. I was curious about a cheaper alternative to iso acoustics, especially something that won’t leave a mark on a component. I bought 4 feet in the soft variety for the Mjolnir 3 or maybe a dac or preamp but I like the stock feet on the serene, mc1, and ma3. And 8 in the firm variety for the Tyrs. They were fairly easy to install and don’t seem to make a seal against a component which happens with the iso acoustics feet so you can still move them around a bit once they are under something. Might add some thoughts in that isolation thread depending on how it goes.
Nice! I’ve been thinking of something for the Mjolnir if it stays as well.
They look like a good fit? Not too high?
I’ve been curious about Audioquest’s 72V DBS noise isolation tech and I received a great deal on a Coffee USB cable.
I bought something very special that’ll arrive here by the end of the year and will definitely require an article from me in 2024…
Does it come from Japan?
That’s what I was thinking.
Mass Kobo
That or Lampizator but I’m hoping for the Mass Kobo
I was honestly thinking he was talking about ”that” super rare SS amp. I would love to know how it performs with the Sus and how it stacks up against another top tier amp like the Riviera AIC-10. If it’s that SS amp that I’m thinking of, I think that will be a fantastic read when you do an article on it.
Awesome! I’m waiting for my Tenderfoot to arrive as well to go under my Lampizator, except I got mine w/ the adhesive and I’m actually planning on letting it stick under the chassis to allow easier sliding in and out of tight-fitting middle shelf. Have been trying to contact Herbie’s without success to get an update, so glad to hear they’re actually shipping product.
