I saw this post
but yeah he doesn’t say that hot plugging is bad, just be careful
Not that big of a deal, you just have to know, becomes 2nd nature whenever you want to use the amp
That’s personally what I have done on that amp and it works reasonably fine
Also I should note that it’s safer to hot swap an xlr plug vs a 1/4 inch trs plug, because when you hot swap a trs you short things out, you don’t get that with xlr
Edit: well look at that the same thing was just posted above lol
Oh wow. Well let me edit my posts. I PMed dukie about it a whole back when I was thinking about commissioning one and he told me it wasn’t necessary
So if you want to warm up wa33 with nothing plugged in just do it in preamp mode?
I just plug something in before I turn it on, but I leave headphones plugged in to pretty much everything unless I am swapping them out.
There is a chance they are assuming the preamp output is connected to something, not just dangling. But my guess is there is a load resistor in parallel with the pre amp output, in which case it’s probably fine. But I’d check with Woo if you intended to use it like that.
Me too. I would definitely find a way to blow it up.
Well damn perhaps I shouldn’t have mentioned that, but it sounds so good lol. It’s really not that big of a deal as long as you know how to use it properly
It’s the specific reason Abyss will not recommend the amp FWIW, they’ve had owners damage headphones.
But generally I’m with you it’s not a big deal.
Weren’t you the guys telling me not to worry to much about my tube amp? LOL
I’m actually enjoying the reading and taking solace in that the stratosphere level of headphone amps comes with its own issues.
Headphone tube amps with some exceptions, generally have less “quirks” than some higher powered tube speaker amps, the concept of always having a load on a speaker amp is much less of an issue (I don’t know anyone who disconnects their speakers when they power off), and the power involved in often much higher.
Tube amps that start pushing the envelopes of the tubes and transformers they are using start running into needing the load issues.
The Egoista 845 is just special, it’s literally one cap and a muting relay to add a soft start and fix the power on issue, but the designer clearly didn’t want to compromise.
In practice though the only thing I really think about with my tube amps is turning them on in advance of using them and turning them off when I’m done. The latter is more of a pain on my 2Channel, where I have to wait for a couple of minutes for the capacitors to discharge, so my tube preamp doesn’t send a massive pop (and give me a heart attack) to the speakers when I turn that off.
The hot swap issue isnt even that hard if he wants no compromise. Ive seen DIY builds have a switch that connects a resistor for a load durring warm up. You switch over to the resistor when you want to swap cans and switch back once something is plugged in.
I predict a future post (by me).
“We’ll guys, I did it. I blew up my amp…again. Here the YouTube video of it pouring blue smoke.”
Why am I being paged, does someone have an amp?
Since we were talking about their availability on the used market, @Draaly do you have any links where those might be up for sale?
