Utopia vs Mysphere 3.2 vs Susvara vs 1266 Phi TC

NOTE: A bit outdated, actually more up to date comparisons in the mysphere article (somewhat)

These have quickly become my favorite headphones and are constantly grabbed for, all offer uniquely different yet equally valuable experiences, and all happen to be a major pain in the ass to take near their limits for source gear.

Let’s get this out of the way now, all of these are not worthwhile unless you plan to treat them with the proper source gear otherwise look elsewhere.

Now then, to get right into at a glance technical ability, I’ll just go straight for it and not bore you with any words. I will explain my reasoning after and include little blurbs on the side. Will be ranked 1-4, with 4 being the most in the category (most texture for example) or highest performing in that category, and 1 being the least or worst performing in that category. Keep in mind these are in comparison with each other, not to be taken out of context. Although note that this will not tell the full story, so make sure to read below as well

Generalized: Utopia Mysphere Susvara 1266 Notes
Resolution 3 3 4 3 All top tier resolution but the susvara leads here by a bit imo. I should say that the mysphere might be a bit lacking in treble and lower bass resolution, but midrange resolution is up there with the rest
Speed and Separation 2 2 4 3 The utopia and mysphere are pretty fast, but it just can’t compete with the planar in this regard
Control and Grip 2 2 4 3 While the 1266 might have more apparent grip in the low end, the susvara has it better throughout the range, mysphere has surprising control of the midrange but not much else
Texture 3 3 4 1 The utopia and susvara offer a lot more nuance than the 1266 does, mysphere offers more than the 1266 in both the treble and midrange but not bass, but that midrange texture is strong enough to elevate it
Treble Extension 4 1 2 3 Both the utopia and 1266 sound like they offer limitless treble
Bass Extension 2 1 3 4 The 1266 feels like it has bottomless low end, susvara is 2nd best there
Microdynamics 2 3 4 1 The susvara does a wonderful job with low level changes, the mysphere actually keeps up well too surprisingly
Macrodynamics 2 3 2 4 If you want macro, you want 1266, mysphere does surprisingly well in this regard too
Background Blackness 2 4 2 3 The mysphere have the most non existent background, followed by the 1266. The utopia and susvara might be tied there
Placement accuracy 2 3 4 1 While I think the susvara has a better balance of accuracy to the recording, the mysphere has better accuracy to real world
Stage Width 1 4 2 3 Mysphere can sound extremely wide and open, only the 1266 can get close to that
Stage Depth 3 2 4 2 Both the susvara and utopia offer tons of depth in their stage
Sense of size/grandness 1 4 2 3 Both the mysphere and 1266 feel pretty large and grand
Timbre 2 3 4 1 I was debating putting the mysphere over the susvara, but I think in most cases the susvara edges it out a bit
Tonality 2 3 4 1 See above
Overall Bass Quality 1 2 3 4 1266 to me has the most satisfying bass overall when it comes to extension and rumble, impact/slam, dynamics, but I think both the susvara and mysphere offer more organic, textured, and nuanced bass, but mysphere falls short in texture and extension to the susvara. Utopia bass is meh to me and not as good as the other 3
Overall Midrange Quality 2 4 3 1 The susvara and mysphere both have phenomenal mids that are very organic and capable, but the susvara offers a bit more technical ability behind those mids but the mysphere feels just more organic. The 1266 midrange is it’s weakest link and is meh.
Overall Treble Quality 4 3 3 2 Weird tie here, to me the utopia is the most refined in the treble, the susvara and mysphere after that (mysphere has better organicness but susvara has better extension and linearity) The 1266 has great extension and sparkle but feels not as organic and refined as the rest
Tonal Density 2 3 4 1 While the susvara isn’t the most dense here (that would be the mysphere) it does have the most accurate density imo
Smoothness 3 2 4 1 The utopia is surprisingly smooth given it’s voicing
Forwardness 3 2 1 4 The 1266 just shoves things toward you in comparison to others
Forgivingness 1 2 4 3 Both the susvara and 1266 are surprisingly forgiving of poor recordings, where the utopia and mysphere will sound more bland, un-engaging, and raw
Organicness 2 4 4 3 I think it’s a tie here between the mysphere and the susvara, I will elaborate later
Source Pickiness 4 3 1 2 The utopia and mysphere both feel almost wonky and messed up on poor source gear matches, where the susvara and 1266 can still be somewhat enjoyable and expected
Scaling Potential 3 3 4 3 Triple tie? I honestly think all of them can scale extremely high, but the susvara can scale just a bit farther

Now, I know from the above it might look like the susvara would end up being the winner, but while it is great that’s not always the case. I will say I use basically all 4 of these almost equally depending on what I am listening to and how I am feeling.

I think in terms of music they work well with:

Susvara: general all rounder

Mysphere: Generally organic music that isn’t too complex

Utopia: Complex organic music

1266: Inorganic music

The Utopia is like a very neutral reference can, it tries to give you as much as possible without trying to add to much, more trying to show you the recording. While it is forward, it isn’t forceful or anything, very nuanced and technical without being offensively so. It has a very unique stage that is spherical and wrap around that lets you pick out things easily. Feels like a more analytical reference take on things without having a lot of the analytical drawbacks. I can’t say it sounds the most realistic, but I can say it sounds very faithful to the recording and really shows you what’s there, and at times that is pretty desirable and can make things really pop. Can really show dynamics organically though.

The Mysphere is hard to directly compare because it’s a much different experience than all the others, it offers the most accurate experience of listening to music in a room, and it’s presentation of almost nearfield speakers really changes things to overcome some of it’s weaker aspect. It’s got a midrange to die for, presentation that is extremely convincing, and tonality that is pleasing for almost all organic music. Sure it’s not the most resolving out of the bunch, but I think it’s realistic portrayal of dynamics, and it’s extremely technical midrange (the rest of the headphone isn’t as technical, so much realism there) makes it a winner combined with it’s spatial recreation.

The Susvara is so impressive in how it can give you so much without shoving it in your face, and how organic, nuanced in the low level, and refined it feels. Almost effortless. Real hard to put down for almost anything, basically I can’t think of a music genre that feels off on it too much, just does well with almost everything you can push it’s way and consistently impresses with long term listening (it’s initial wow factor isn’t as strong as other headphones). Also really nice thickness and richness, smoothness, and a bit more relaxed take to go along with it all. So much nuance and micro focus

The 1266 looks like it lacks alot, but with the right tracks it can be a blast and easily preferable to other headphones. It’s bass texture, control, slam, extension, basically everything bass will knock your socks off all the time, super enjoyable. The added treble sparkle, general forwardness without harshness, and very expansive and immersive stage really ties it together for a really engaging experience that doesn’t really let you focus on it’s shortcomings (with the right track that is). It isn’t that organic in many regards, but it does make things sound extremely fun and engaging to where it’s hard to not listen to at times. So somewhat specialist, but always worth pulling out with the right songs

How about some cable talk (only 2 per headphone)

For the Utopia, my favorite was the Danacable Lazuli, either Ultra or Nirvana, it added better bass clarity, impact and slam, and more grip and control, added more stage width without messing up depth, better timbre, and more dynamically alive. Basically improved both fun and organicness without messing with anything that I liked the focal for. An interesting pick might be the Nordost Heimdall 2, it had phenomenal tonality and timbre, large boost to organicness, and added more smoothness with no downsides due to it, BUT did reduce impact further leading to it ending up a bit soft, it did relax it a bit more than I like, and reduced stage size a bit. Unusual but can see the appeal

For the Mysphere, I personally think the Kimber Axios hybrid is the way to go here, but that’s one of the very few I’ve tried on it, nice upgrade over stock that helps with bass impact and prominence, and adds a bit of treble extension while keeping the midrange excellence. Sharper staging and nicer timbre too. More dynamically alive.

For the Susvara, the clear pick is the DHC Prion4, to me this cable boosted the technicalities a fair bit without sacrificing any organicness, so overall improvement in every aspect, not much more to say there. I would also give a nod to the Danacable for more fun, but I think it does end up tilting balance a bit more toward warm and fun which I don’t know if that’s actually what I would want to do with this headphone. Another solid cable.

For the 1266, I had honestly mainly stuck with the Abyss Superconductor cable, as it elevates what the headphone does best, and kinda addresses some flaws but it’s not perfect. I do think the Prion4 does improve a lot of technical aspects I previously found lacking in it, but it also introduces some unpleasant thinness, over forwardness, and somewhat confused staging, so hit or miss imo.

To do some quick general amp pairings, I should first set a disclaimer. A lot of these amps are going to be many times the cost of the headphones themselves. This is normal, worthwhile, and encouraged if you want to get the most out of what you have. With that said, onward lol. Going to be doing this in pairs for both headphones, which might be interesting.

Utopia & Mysphere:
If you are looking for a more clean neutral: Mass Kobo 394 II, Woo WA33, Eddie Current Studio T, or Angstrom Stella MK2. Honorable mention to ECP DSHA L-3F for utopia

If you are looking for a bit more warmth, body, and relaxing: Riviera AIC-10, Crayon CHA-1, Arcturus 316a. Honorable mention to DNA Stratus/Stellaris for both.

Susvara & 1266:
If you are looking for something leaning toward the more clean and forward side of things: Woo WA33, Mass Kobo 406, Viva Egoista 845, Niimbus US4+. Honorable mention to the Pathos InPol Ear

If you are looking for something more organic with a bit more weight and warmth: Riviera AIC-10, Aries Cerat Genus, Oji Special BDI-DC44B, Trafomatic Primavera. Honorable mention to the Bakoon AMP-13r for the susvara and XI Formula S + Powerman for the 1266.

Will elaborate on specific pairings when I get the time to :+1:

Going to run though all of the aforementioned amps, give some notes about their sound, and try to elaborate a bit. You might see some trends here. These are in no order whatsoever. NOTE on the mysphere, in the end final rankings I will note if an amp works better with a 3.1 or 3.2

Mass Kobo 394 II: This is a great pairing for the utopia and mysphere, but actually is pretty decent with the 1266 depending on what you are after, can’t do the susvara (unless you get a 406, improves everything too).

Some stand out characteristics of this amp:

  • Cleanliness, really clean and neutral signature, with a hint of sweetness
  • Precision, this is a really tight and quick amp, very speedy and pinpoint
  • Depth, it’s stage isn’t the widest, but has lots of depth to offer in it’s stage and presents organically
  • Texture, it can really pull a lot of texture throughout the range
  • Microdynamics (and microdetail), does a really good job with low level changes and low level information
  • Background blackness, very absent background
  • Extension, very well extended
  • Overall balance and neutrality, basically everything sounds extremely even without sounding soulless or inorganic

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You like a more relaxed amp, also if you are looking for an extremely wide stage look elsewhere
  • You want something very tonally dense, this is a slight bit on the lean side
  • You want something that hits extremely hard, this has good impact but doesn’t slam as hard as others
  • You want something forgiving, this will be very transparent of the chain and source material
  • You are looking for a strong macro amp, this tends to emphasize the lower level info more
  • You are looking for a warmer tilt, generally not what this amp is voiced for

Some reasonable dac pairings I’d consider:

If you were looking for something still reasonably neutral but to add a slight bit more warmth, stage width, smoothness and body while being pretty technical: Rockna Wavedream, Bricasti M1SE, Nagra Classic DAC

If you were looking to tilt it pretty dang analytical/dead neutral forward but not sacrifice organicness too much, but going for the most raw precision: Berkeley Alpha Reference 2 or Mola Mola Tambaqui

If you were looking to lean heavier into the warmer, smoother, richer, relaxed, and organic range of things without pushing it too far: SW1X DAC IV, Lampizator Golden Gate II

Woo WA33 (Elite if possible): This is one of the rare ones that I think works really well with all 4 headphones, so big strong point there

Some stand out characteristics of this amp:

  • Clarity and cleanliness with surprising organicness, able to offer exceptional clarity while still sounding pretty organic
  • Microdynamics and detail, really has this represented quite well with great ability
  • Spatial recreation, throws a very organic stage with really organic presentation, great ability in said stage
  • Background blackness, very absent background
  • Overall control and heft, surprising ability to throw around weight with great command
  • Timbre, pretty fantastic here
  • Texture, can pull lots with ease
  • Extension, very strong on either side
  • Overall balance, basically most what you could ask for in one package

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You don’t like a dryer and more raw leaning amp, this is a somewhat more dry amp for a tube amp
  • You want something more forgiving, will not forgive bad aspects of the chain and source
  • You want something more relaxed and chill, this does lean on the forward side

If you were looking for something still reasonably neutral but to add a slight bit more warmth, stage width, smoothness and body while being pretty technical: Rockna Wavedream, Bricasti M1SE, Nagra Classic DAC

If you were looking to tilt it pretty dang analytical/dead neutral forward but not sacrifice organicness too much, but going for the most raw precision: Berkeley Alpha Reference 2 or BAT REX 3 DAC

If you were looking to lean heavier into the warmer, smoother, richer, relaxed, and organic range of things without pushing it too far: Totaldac d1-single-mk2, Lampizator Golden Gate II

Eddie Current Studio T: Works very well with utopia, good for the mysphere, lackluster with the 1266, and a no go for the susvara as well.

Some stand out characteristics of this amp:

  • Very nuanced overall, maintains very organic balance while leaning on the cleaner side of things
  • Low level focus, tons of information to be had there, also great microdynamics that stand out
  • Mild sweetness, instilled into everything without upsetting balance
  • Great liquidity, everything just flows
  • Timbre, fantastic and very accurate
  • Stage depth is impressive, things sound really deep and layered
  • Texture, has ton to offer here and makes it very prominent
  • Tonal density, has really excellent balance between density and accuracy

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You find yourself wanting extreme control and grip, it is good in this regard but it’s not stand out
  • You dislike a bit of sweetness being injected
  • You dislike a bit of softness, it does hit pretty well and isn’t blunted but is slightly softer leaning
  • You want something warmer and relaxed leaning, I’d say it’s presentation neutral
  • You want something forgiving, fairly revealing of source

If you were looking for something still reasonably neutral but to add a slight bit more warmth, stage, smoothness and body while being pretty technical: Nagra Classic DAC, Lampizator Golden Gate II

If you were looking to tilt it pretty dang analytical/dead neutral forward but not sacrifice organicness too much, but going for the most raw precision: Berkeley Alpha Reference 2, Mola Mola Tambaqui

If you were looking to lean heavier into the warmer, smoother, richer, relaxed, and organic range of things without pushing it too far: SW1X DAC IV, Mojo Mystique EVO Pro 21

Crayon CHA-1: Pairs well with the mysphere and the utopia, not the greatest with the susvara or 1266

Some stand out characteristics of this amp:

  • Speed and separation, very quick on it’s feet
  • Spatial recreation, very open stage overall
  • Tonal density, decently rich for how quick and technical it can be
  • Timbre, actually pretty good
  • Resolution, can provide alot without pushing it in your face
  • Texture, great retrieval
  • Dynamics, tends to treat micro and macro evenly and both very well
  • Liquidity and effortlessness, as described
  • Background blackness

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You dislike added smoothness, it’s smoothness doesn’t sacrifice much but might need more bite
  • You find too much attention on speed undesirable, can sound unusually fast at times
  • You want more impact, it has good body but doesn’t really slam
  • You want something more forward and extreme clarity focused

If you were looking for something to emphasize it’s strengths: Rockna Wavedream Balanced, Bricasti M1SE

If you were looking to tilt it more toward neutral and really speed focused: Berkeley Alpha Reference 2

If you were looking to lean heavier into the warmer, smoother, richer, relaxed, and organic range of things without pushing it too far: Lampizator Golden Gate II, Weiss DAC 501

Riviera AIC-10: Another one that works equally well with all 4 imo.

Some stand out characteristics of this amp:

  • Command and control, it has a very heavy hand over everything without being overwhelming
  • Timbre, very very good
  • Texture, tons of texture in the bass and midrange
  • Sweetness, while colored, adds a really enjoyable sweetness to everything that is hard to dislike
  • Stage width, really wide and expansive stage
  • Impact, this thing can kick with control lol
  • Liquidity, everything just flows really well
  • Dynamics, extremely alive in both macro and micro
  • Speed and separation, very immersive and accurate here

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You place high value in treble extension and clarity, can be a bit lacking air at times
  • You like a much more forward and clean sounding amp, is a bit on the relaxed side of things
  • You enjoy a less forceful and commanding amp that’s more delicate, this isn’t for you then
  • You don’t enjoy a more colored warmer and thicker amp, this is what that does

If you were looking for something to emphasize it’s traits without going overboard: Totaldac d1-single-mk2, Lampizator Golden Gate II, Mojo Mystique EVO Pro 21, SW1X DAC IV, Weiss DAC 501

If you were looking to tilt it more neutral and airy, with more depth and a bit less density: Berkeley Alpha Reference 2

Angstrom Stella Headphone MK2: I think the susvara and mysphere pair very well, the utopia is nice as well and the 1266 is meh

Some stand out characteristics of this amp:

  • Liquidity and smoothness, able to pull this off without taking away from anything
  • Tonal density, really well balanced
  • Clarity and cleanliness, was surprised about how clean this ended up being without sounding analytical or forward, esp in the treble
  • Timbre, fantastic here
  • Lower level nuance, has loads of it
  • Background blackness, really really nice
  • Well extended overall
  • Texture, super easy to hear and front and center
  • Depth, very deep stage

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You value extreme grip and hefty bass, it has reasonable bass but doesn’t excel here
  • You don’t like a more forward sounding amp, it can get a bit forward
  • You want something that is a bit less midrange and treble focused, as that’s where it tends to shine

If you were looking for something still reasonably neutral but to add a slight bit more warmth, stage width, smoothness and body while being pretty technical: Totaldac d1-single-mk2, Lampizator Golden Gate II, SW1X DAC IV, Nagra Classic DAC

Arcturus 316a: Works very well with the mysphere and the utopia, not so much with the planars here.

Some stand out characteristics of this amp:

  • Tonal balance, overall very enjoyable signature and balanced while not being super neutral
  • Sweetness, has a lot of it without being overwhelming
  • Dynamics, very alive in micro and decently in macro
  • Timbre, really good
  • Texture, it’s texture isn’t in your face but is well presented
  • Overall organicness, makes things most sound organic
  • Tonal density, on the richer side of things for you
  • Wider spatial recreation, fairly open sounding

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You value the most resolution out there, it’s pretty resolving but it’s not the focus
  • You like something really neutral, it’s balanced but does have noticeable coloration
  • You want absolute grip and command, it’s a softer more chill amp in this regard
  • You want lots of speed, it’s fast but not that fast

If you were looking for something sweetened but to add a slight bit more warmth, stage width, smoothness and body while being pretty technical: SW1X DAC IV, Rockna Wavedream, Bricasti M1SE, Nagra Classic DAC, Lampizator Golden Gate II

DNA Stratus: Works well with the mysphere mainly, utopia is also pretty nice

Some stand out characteristics of this amp:

  • Smoothness, very smooth overall
  • Softness, a softer more delicate sound
  • Micro focus, really great attention to microdynamics and low level detail
  • Timbre, very organic overall
  • Spatial recreation, fairly large sounding
  • Warmth and tonal density, warmer leaning with pretty high density

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You dislike a softer leaning amp, cause that’s what this is
  • You want the most extension on either side, doesn’t really have that
  • You want a more forward and aggressive sound, this is pretty chill
  • You want a more macro focused amp, this tends to hone micro
  • You want a more pinpoint accurate amp, not what this goes for

If you were looking for something to enhance what it’s already good at: Rockna Wavedream, SW1X DAC IV, Lampizator Golden Gate II, Mojo Mystique EVO Pro 21

If you wanted to both clean and tighten it up: Berkeley Alpha Reference 2, Mola Mola Tambaqui

Viva Egoista 845: Personally think it works well with all 4, but does favor the susvara and 1266

Some stand out characteristics of this amp:

  • Slam and impact, really can hit you hard
  • Overall clarity and balance, while still remaining organic
  • Very large stage, pretty massive spatial recreation
  • Well extended, covers both treble and bass very far
  • Lots of command and grip, lots of control exerted
  • Macro focus, without sacrificing micro that much
  • Fairly effortless, never feels strained
  • Lots of texture and low level nuance revealed

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You want lots of tonal density, it’s a bit on the more dry side of things
  • You don’t want a more forward amp, it isn’t that relaxed
  • You want a softer more delicate touch, then this isn’t good for that
  • You want a softer and smoother sound, this can get a bit raw

If you were looking for something to play to it’s strengths and lean a bit more organic: Totaldac d1-single-mk2, Mojo Mystique EVO Pro 21, Rockna Wavedream

If you were looking to tilt it more toward clarity and raw precision: Berkeley Alpha Reference 2, BAT REX 3 DAC

If you were looking to chill it out a bit and take a more micro and organic focus: Lampizator Golden Gate II, SW1X DAC IV

Niimbus US4+: Think it works well with all 4, but does favor the planars more imo, specifically the 1266

Some stand out characteristics of this amp:

  • Cleanliness and balance, pretty studio neutral
  • Tight and controlled, reasonable control and tightness
  • Extended without being offensive, treble feels a bit smoothed while being extended
  • Equal dynamic focus, doesn’t treat one more than the other
  • Tight imaging and wide stage, although lacks depth
  • Good impact, can hit reasonably hard

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You like something very organic, it’s more clean and neutral with less organic presentation
  • You want something with more soul and emotion, kinda lacks that
  • You don’t like something a bit more on the dull and safer side of things, plays it a bit too safe
  • You want something to really reveal nuance, it can kinda feel a bit flat there

If you were looking for something still reasonably neutral but to add a slight bit more warmth, stage width, smoothness and body while being pretty technical: Aqua La Voce S3, Sonnet Morpheus

If you were looking to tilt it pretty dang analytical/dead neutral forward but not sacrifice organicness too much, but going for the most raw precision: Berkeley Alpha Series 2

If you were looking to lean heavier into the warmer, smoother, richer, relaxed, and organic range of things without pushing it too far: Holo May KTE, Lampizator Amber 3

Pathos InPol Ear: Favors the 1266 more and susvara 2nd

Some stand out characteristics of this amp:

  • Good impact and slam, can hit reasonably hard
  • Fairly neutral without being inorganic, pretty balanced
  • Good depth to stage, accurate placement
  • Equal balance between macro and micro

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You want a sweeter warmer amp, generally fairly neutral
  • You want a bit more delacy and nuance, this is slightly lacking there
  • You want a more organic sounding amp, this has something that puts me off, can’t put my finger on what it is

If you were looking for something still reasonably neutral but to add a slight bit more warmth, stage width, smoothness and body while being pretty technical: Mojo Mystique v3, Lampizator Amber 3, SW1X DAC II

If you were looking to add a bit more organicness but keep it fairly clean: Aqua La Voce S3

Aries Cerat Genus: Works very well with the 1266, susvara, and also mysphere actually

  • Overall balance, while warmer leaning it really does still sound pretty natural/neutral

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You want something more analytical in signature

If you were looking for something to really emphasize what it does well: Aries Cerat Helene, Totaldac d1-single-mk2, Lampizator Golden Gate II, SW1X DAC IV

Oji Special BDI-DC44B G Tune: Pairs very well with the susvara, mysphere, and also 1266

  • Timbre, is very nice
  • Pretty black background, very vacant overall
  • Microdynamic focus while having macro when it needs it
  • Great balance, of listening enjoyment and technical ability

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You don’t like a smoother amp, it does have that aspect showcased a bit
  • You want something more analytical and clean, a bit more neutral smoother relaxed
  • You want something a bit more energetic at first listen, more casual and chill

If you were looking for something to play to it’s strengths: Rockna Wavedream Balanced, Lampizator Golden Gate II, Bricasti M1SE, Berkeley Alpha Reference 2

Trafomatic Primavera: For the susvara mainly and 1266 is also very solid

  • Organic presentation, it’s spatial recreation lends it to placing things very organically
  • Great texture, lots of it but not in your face

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You want a more clean and lean signature, this kinda lays it on more
  • You dislike a bit more intimate stage, but still accurate
  • You want something a bit more fun and relaxed, this isn’t that relaxed

If you were looking for something still reasonably neutral but to add a slight bit more warmth, stage width, smoothness and body while being pretty technical: Lampizator Golden Gate II, Rockna Wavedream Balanced, Nagra Classic DAC

If you were looking to lean heavier into the warmer, smoother, richer, relaxed, and organic range of things without pushing it too far: Totaldac d1-single-mk2, Mojo Mystique EVO Pro 21

  • Wide stage, pretty wide spatial recreation
  • Timbre pretty good, reasonably nice

  • You want extreme tightness and control, this is on the looser side of things
  • You want something more revealing of the source gear, reasonably transparent but is forgiving
  • You want something more forward, this is more on the relaxed side of things

If you wanted to play to it’s strengths more: Lampizator Amber 3, Rockna Wavelight, Sonnet Morpheus

  • Deep stage, gives great depth and accuracy in placement
  • Slight smoothness, that works well with the utopia
  • Tonal density, actually reasonably dense without being overdone
  • Great speed and separation, pretty fast
  • Great microdynamics, really does well here

This amp will not be for you if:

  • You want something warmer thicker and wetter, fairly neutral here
  • You want something more relaxed or forward, pretty presentation neutral
  • You find you want a more macro focus overall, given this is more micro

If you were looking for something still reasonably neutral but to add a slight bit more warmth, stage width, smoothness and body while being pretty technical: Holo Spring 2 KTE, Schiit Yggy A2, Crane Song Solaris Quantum, Sonnet Morpheus,

If you were looking to tilt it pretty dang analytical/dead neutral forward but not sacrifice organicness too much, but going for the most raw precision: Berkeley Alpha Series 2, Aqua La Voce S3, XI Sagra

Ah, forgot to mention some other amps as well, damn it. Will cover these quickly

The modwright ha300: works well with all 4 actually, but does favor the susvara and the mysphere more

Generally a good neutral clean focused amp, with a bit of sweetness, impressive micro focus while having good control, great tonality and pretty nice timbre. Can be slightly softer leaning but not an issue

The luxman p750u: works well with the 1266 and potentially susvara

A very warm, smooth, wide and relaxed amp, generally great tonal density, great smoothness, fairly forgiving, and enjoyable tuning but can be too colored for some and might be a slight bit less technical than I like

The lta mz3: works well with the utopia and mysphere

Great cleanliness while being very organic, very deep stage, very black background, great control, nice tonal density, impressive dynamics

The pass hpa-1: works well with mysphere and utopia

Really nice tonality and overall balance, great timbre, a more neutral organic signature, tonal density very nice, great sweetness, nice impact and control

The cavalli liquid gold (og): works well with the 1266 and susvara, potentially the mysphere depending on what you are after

Generally it’s a more rich leaning amp but still reasonably balanced, pretty smooth with a more macro focus without disappointing in micro that much. Timbre and tonality are pretty great, and it’s fairly dynamically alive, although it’s not the most technical amp for it’s price. Stage is pretty wide although a bit more vague, lots of punch and slam

Going to copy over the shit ranking system from my dac comparison to try and group their performance class without having to compare everything against each other. Anything denoted with a !? means it does preform near holy shit from a technical perspective, but something felt off that forced it lower (aka one smaller nitpick, but could be holy shit depending on the person). Things without an explanation mark had too many problems synergy wise or just weren’t competent enough to reach the next tier. If that makes sense. Things are ranked internally in the categories from my favorite at the tops and leasts at the bottoms, within each category

Really enjoyable writeup. Definitely gives a lot of food for thought on which of those I wanna go after in the future. Enjoying the myspheres so much though that it’ll probably be a while unless a really good deal comes up.

Honestly for some I can totally see people picking one and being done depending on what their needs are lol, the mysphere is super solid, and there’s really not anything else like it imo, so the next option is just boosting it further with source gear lol

The only one I’d really disagree on is the Forgiveness ranking, I find the extra Bass extension on the 1266 really holds a lot of poor Rock/Metal tracks together much better than the Susvara does, so I’d give the edge to the 1266.
I might argue on Blackness as well between Susvara and 1266, but with both I think your pretty much hearing the blackness of the source chain.

I could see that, I was more evaluating overall for a wide range of music, but for this situation I would agree the 1266 is likely the better pick here

Oh, good catch there actually, I messed up putting that in lol. I would say the 1266 has better background than the susvara yes. I wonder if the distance from the ear from the driver + potential seal is part of that actually, idk. Would explain why the mysphere clearly leads there

I think some of it is the macrodynamics, you really notice it as a contrast.
Sting used to describe the feeling of falling into the void when they stopped playing at Police concerts, and that’s always what I’ve equated to blackness. it’s the contrast between the notes.

To me it’s always just been basically how well a headphone can represent the sound of emptiness (it’s weird to say it but that’s the best I can describe), how well can a headphone portray nothingness, can you hear the space between something when you shouldn’t be able to

You can put me in this camp and according to your ranking system it looks like I chose the right one for my preferences (Susvara). It’s funny in this hobby when you find little nuanced things you come to appreciate in this case a headphone that isn’t overly source picky (to a point) but also has the ability to scale very well. Something I never would’ve even thought to look for when I was more green. Value is always a difficult thing to quantify but, for me, gear that scales greatly adds value even to a $6k pair of headphones.

The rankings (I mean, who doesn’t like rankings?) and overall layout made this an enjoyable read :beers:

A lot of great info here!! Really shows where the strengths of each.

Also worth saying- a Utopia can be had on the used market for 1900-2100

That’s a lot of headphone for the money.

True, but that’s where many get tripped up, if you don’t have the source gear for it, it no longer is a good value imo. (Like I’d rather have a clear + 2k stack rather than a utopia + 1k stack)

Realistically all these headphones can be found around 2-3.5k used sans 1266. Personally I’d say the utopia or mysphere offer the most value prop

Yes despite the actual list prices the 1266 is probably the most expensive headphone on that list.

Woo has some open box MySphere 3.1’s for 3K which is a very good deal
Susvara are probably low 3s used and high 3’s low 4’s from a dealer
1266 low 4s with dealer discount, and about the same used.
So yes at closer to 2K used the Utopia is a lot of headphone if you have the chain to drive it well.

I was thinking about this later last night, and I think your probably onto something.
Putting any cup over your ear, you will hear the blood flow to some extent much like listening to a seashell, but at much lower levels.
And at the levels we’re talking about that has to impact perceived blackness.

Yep, and with the mysphere being basically free air with a large distance from the ear, and the 1266 making no seal and floating a bit, along with the larger than normal distance, it would make sense if that were the case

I hadn’t even considered the “seashell effect.”

Same lol im so glad i went with my “gut” and got the Susvara.

Really wanted the Nimbus but since the 4+ is out and the 5pro has replaced it with an additional 1500-2000 dollar price increase that’s out of the question for now. However I’ve heard the 550/590 are very good alternatives

Also from this It seems like the susvara is what I’m looking for in an allrounder

Honestly after hearing a 590, I personally wouldn’t consider a niimbus anymore. I do think the niimbus is superior technically, but I don’t think it’s really that far ahead of a jump to justify it’s price extra. I also slightly prefer the tuning of the v590 actually, it does have a bit more emotion than the niimbus does
