There’s a surprisingly large amount of people that do that (I know a few and it’s helped me get some gear I wanted lol). There are just some people who stick with the new and FOTM, buy stuff just to hear it, either praise it to hell or shit on it non stop, and regardless of the thoughts on it end up selling it a few weeks later. Some simply just buy to try and move on fairly quickly
Also true, if people buy something and expect it to sound one way but it sounds different, typically they will be more likely to sell it even if it is good but just not what they expected. One of the reasons why it’s good to go into any purchase with an open mind if possible
I’m honestly quite surprised people still put so much emphasis on signature at this range, because from my experience just the raw tuning/fr really is less impactful than the intangibles at this range, they color the sound more than the signature. But perhaps that’s just what people are talking about when they say that anyways, with the signature being the entire experience
That’s a good way of putting it. Personally I feel like my overall thoughts on technical availability and sound don’t change much after a few days of getting something in (assuming it’s in a good synergy chain and tested with other components, not accounting for burn in either), but just because I know the sound after a few days doesn’t mean I will continue to enjoy/find it worthwhile for myself what I already determined it offered
I don’t mean signature in terms of like fr or just simple signature things. I more of meant wholisticaly. Like I can see someone selling on a weiss super quickly if they the level of attack ad forwardness it has just doesn’t mesh with their chain/goals. Tbh I try and keep stuff a while because I like more time to form my opinions on source gear but it at least makes sense to me why one wouldn’t take that time if there us some kind of deal breaker in the sound for them
You guys are looking this from the top down because you’ve got more experience with the high end. I’m looking at it from the bottom up and IMO if you don’t give something time, then you’re never going to “grow” your sonic palette. Like trying champagne or eating sushi for the first time.
I think there’s something to be said for keeping things long term to really know what they’re about. Maybe the hobby to some people is trying out new things just to say they “had” it, but what audio gear really demands is being lived with.
Very fair, I have my position because at this point, very little that I buy/try will really grow my palette or give me any real further insight into audio as a whole, but when there is something that might I typically give it a ton more time than normal because it’s something I actually have to try and comprehend and understand, those types of things are really where I have to slow down and try and wrap my head around things (somewhat recently for me that was the pacific and also the k50, it’s taken many months to fully appreciate and figure out what’s going on)
This is how I look at it. I try not to get rid of anything I’ve bought until I can voice what I do/don’t like about it just as a way to grow in my own mind. Only time I realy break from this is when I need to clear up cash for something. Tbh this desire to try and figure out exactly whats going on is why I’ve kept the sagra → 13r stack so long…
This I wholeheartedly agree with, what’s initially impressive isn’t necessarily what you want to live with.
I find the 1266 this way, whenever I pull it out after a hiatus I am always initially impressed, but it sort of wears off over time.
I think some of that “had it” can come from the early journey when things are much more wallet friendly to juggle around. Once youre even into midfi im not sure how people keep up that juggle. That all also contributes to midfi hell etc etc.
I am also a little bit in the i dont use it, loose it camp. Right now i can keep my mlp but the space needed is not great, and it needs the balanced dac, and i rather the rnhp and bhc right now, so its going.
Who knows too, maybe the owner had a surprise expense come up. Like an oil drenched car. Even the best laid plans etc etc
This is still true and I’m pretty close to pulling the trigger. I’m looking to put it with the Ferrum Orr and see what happens.
Wow did I really say all of this before - I came here to talk myself out of it but it looks like Delta of the past already had different ideas for Delta of the future…
Can’t say I’ve ever been on that price range, but to me tuning is still crazy important. If mids are recessed it’s just a no. I just can’t enjoy it without mids being either just slightly recessed, to my fav spot which is them being forward. I legit just can’t enjoy it otherwise. No technical abilities will be able to make it up for me.
Interesting, I personally am pretty easily ok with overlooking something like that if another aspect makes up for it, but I also don’t really have a super defined preference for just signature, that doesn’t really matter to me as long as it’s well executed, so not high on my personal priority list, but still something to note. I should clarify if something is just fucked in the frequency response it’s hard to look past that, but imo the majority of all things in the higher end have fr that’s refined enough to not be an issue for me personally
FWIW I think it’s that the only way people know how to talk about sound is in terms of tonality and signature.
You could measure any DAC in this price range or most others and outside something like maybe a Borderpatrol, they will all be flat as a ruler on a FR graph. None of them have recessed anything.
However people describe things like dynamics in FR terms…
Also I was more talking DACs and amps here, not headphones/iems, if it were those I might place a bit more emphasis on its tuning (since for transducers FR can be a lot more over the place)
Thats really where we agree. I think I just have a very specific distaste for mids that are pushed too back. I’ve enjoyed many things that had them slightly behind like even the Obravo Cupids because the mids were still awesome but I have my limits, and even then I didn’t enjoy them enough to buy because of their positioning. Intangibles like staging, speed, detail etc etc are all just as important of course and I have my own “standards” now for them too of what is acceptible and what isn’t.
(This is probably a discussion for another thread, but I hated the oBravo Cupids and I’ve never been able to describe what it is I don’t like about them. I honestly think they’re surprisingly detailed for the price, but something about the presentation just really bothers me.)
Anyone heard the pasithea yet? I know someone selling one and im way too torn between buying it to see how it is and being realistic about the fact that ill probabaly think its fantastic regardless of how good it is since i have no context for its price range
I just contacted Sonnet if I can get some hands-on on a Pasithea. They just wrote back, they are completly out-of-stock and they hope to produce again in Aug/Sep… crazy times!
Pasithea comparison to Baltic 3 coming up in the next few weeks, this is a comparison I’m actually very interested and serious in making and with some help from you guys in the appropriate language and impact areas I should focus on along with equipment pairings I think I can make this worthwhile.
It will also help me decide eventually on which of my multiple DAC’s I would be willing to try and pass on to someone else. The market is tight currently and if I’m gonna take an above average loss on something I want to make sure I hold onto items that fit my preferences best.
