Did your Morpheus arrive Andy?

It did! For other reasons though I decided to get a DDC’s instead of using my PI2AES

Have any impressions for us or thoughts on how it compares to the Sagra?

Thanks for asking!! Have to do bullet points, since I can barely keep my eyes open after this hellish workday. :persevere:

The most notable difference is that the Morpheus has a very relaxed overall presentation. No sharp edges to anything. However probably roughly equal detail/micro which is nice. The Morpheus has a little more in the way of texture, I think. Maybe what many call “organic-ness.”

The downside of this less energetic presentation is, well…it has a less energetic presentation. The “weighted” nature of the Sagra (its distinguishing characteristic, IMO), and corresponding punch/slam/impact isn’t present in the Morpheus.

Hopefully that was coherent..

G’night all!!

Thanks for the impressions and I’m glad you are enjoying it. As your first non-soekris based dac is the Morpheus the first relaxed sounding dac you’ve heard? Trying to figure out if the Sagra was a stand out of the soekris dacs for being energetic or if that’s just a general trait of soekris based products.

I think for myself I would like something a bit more energetic than my Pontus II but not super relaxed in that I can’t get engaged in the music. Not sure where the morpheus falls there but that and the sonnet dac coming out early next year are certainly dacs that I’m interested in.

Let me preface this by saying this is all second hand info (I haven’t heard the morph), but from my understanding the morph is actually fairly slammy and energetic. @krack had morph and spring 3 KTE side by side and said that morph was essentially slam king comparatively. While I did find spring 3 soft, I didn’t think it was unbearably so on anything besides the 13R

I personally think both the sonnet and spring are softer leaning but not lacking on most parings. I do think at least the spring 2 kte and may kte had more impact and slam than the morpheus, but only when using balanced, otherwise the morpheus will have better impact and slam if you compare single ended but ymmv. Either way neither are going to have the weight and real grip and punch of the sagra for that comparison

Great to know! I forgot to mention that both @krack and I used spring 3 on SE only just due to the amps we have on hand. Out of curiosity (havent been on here much past month or so), you had spring 3 in yet? TBH I’m kinda currious how that stacks up since the general consenus seems to be that its a very solid step up in technicalities from s2

Not yet, but soon. Am pretty curious about it for sure

If I could do the DAC comparison again it would be interesting with my Raal amp I now have to test the balanced on both DACs. Unfortunately I’m pretty burnt out and dealing with IRL stuff so my audio journey is gonna take a backseat for a while.

PS Mogwai with RCA 5691 is still my go-to.

PSS Hifiman HE-6 is my baby and I’m never letting it go.

Kind of a shame he didnt keep it longer. He has an AIC-10 inbound and it would have been awesome to hear his thoughts on synergy with. He has also done nothing but praise it in the sonnet thread and then posted it within like 5 days of arriving. That personally seems slightly suspect to me…

Might simply be system synergy. Maybe the pavane gels well with his downstream chain

Tbh I just can’t imagine buying the first production lot of a dac and letting it go in under a week unless you don’t like it (which by all accounts he made on the sonnet thread he did)

One persons opinion, people have things they like and things they listen for,
If your looking for a warm relaxed sound, and you don’t get it, I can see a knee jerk response to just move on. One of the dangers of buying online without hearing it.
At least he’s in the window where he should recoupe most of what he spent on it.

This i get quite a bit. If its just not the sound sig you want don’t bother. But he kept saying esentialy how he was in love with it all week. Tbh maybe I should just PM the guy and ask what the deal breaker was for him. I’m quite currious about this thing given it actually fits my size constraints.

Go read anything Bondaboom posts about new gear he buys and sells a few weeks later.
Some people are just effusive about everything they buy.
It’s impossible to have a really solid impression on something in a couple of days, while my initial impressions of what something does well rarely change (save burn in) how much Iike something often does over a period of days or weeks.
