Sonnet thread, Morpheus / Pasithea / Hermes / Kratos

Here’s a place to discuss this oft mentioned DAC. Designed and produced by Cees Ruijtenberg, (previously and currently) of Metrum Acoustics. It is a R2R, NOS DAC with clever replaceable R2R modules to upgrade if Cees Ruijtenberg devised a new decoding tech. MQA and I2S modules are also available.

Admin note: edited to include all Sonnet dacs

I still would like to hear a Morpheus with my setup especially now that there appears to be a successor releasing soon, which may help with availability and pricing of the Morpheus in the 2nd hand market space.

I know…the one I just bought is in the mail. :man_facepalming:

Whoa - Nice Andy77 - congratz - I’ve seen you hinting around the forums that you were intersted and looking at one. I mean all the times you have pointed out the dimensions etc and what would stack perfect with it, lol. Glad you finally were able to pick one up!

Seriously though, that is awesome. Looking forward to your thoughts especially since we have had/shared some of the same gears.

Which aspects attracted you towards Morph? Also, what’s happening with Sagra? Offloading?

Sorry all! I didn’t mean to make this my private thread! :grimacing:

I sold Sagra for more than I bought the Morpheus. Just threw an ad up on USAM and it sold quickly.

My DAC progression has been Bifrost-2541-Sagra, so the Morpheus will be my first non Soekris based high end DAC. And as Delta said, I’ve had my eye on it for some time!

Not to say that a Soekris DAC is a bad thing, or that the Sagra sounds the same as the 2541.

I want to hear the Sonnet DAC because of the different R2R and NOS implementation. I’ve heard a good Soekris DAC 2 actually 1300 and 1500 series R2R (not NOS), I’ve owned the Bifrost 2 (Multibit R2R on a chip not NOS) and I currently have an HoloAudio DAC (R2R & NOS). I think hearing a Sonnet would help fill in some gaps.

My thought is it might be a DAC to pair up with an OOR - I dunno, but thats how I feel today…

Wait, was that you that sold sagra for 2900 usd? I nearly messaged you to say thats litteraly more than some dealers sell for new… TIL I dont need to worry about resale on my ne sagra if so…

Iirc its fairly slammy. If so that would make a hell of a sus slam combo with oor given oor was already pretty punchy on sus with just p6p (which I geberaly find a hair soft)

Did you by chance get to hear the Morpheus along side the Sagra?

I’m still figuring out my next dac and was reading through threads on the Morpheus on SBAF and Head-Fi yesterday. Seems like a pretty good dac from what I’ve read and certainly something I’ll consider.

Looking forward to your impressions!

Also is the i2s / usb module user replaceable?

This is my current DAC. I compared with Holo Spring 3 on Mogwai SE and am holding on to it for now. I don’t think either of these DACs are the most ideal pairing out there for the price but it’s what I prefer between the two DACs. I’m going to do a DIY solution to hook up the I2S from my Pi2AES.

And yes @Christof the module is replaceable. I replaced the USB module with I2S myself.

Oh and here’s a recent Stereophile review + some basic measurements. Massive grain of salt ofc.

The morpheus is a damn nice dac for the money, honestly like it more than any of the metrum branded dacs I’ve heard, to me the morpheus takes what he already did well in stuff like the pavane but really improved organicness and ended up with something much more complete overall imo

Good thoughts! I’ve read a lot of reviews that compare the Morpheus favorably to the Pavane.

What are you going to do? I found some info on pin outs for the RJ45 cable for Sonnet/Metrum, but I’m still unsure how I’m going to proceed.

I’ll PM you. I actually do need the pinout knowledge to do this.

^theres my imgur album + finished attempt of the ethernet I2S cable off Pi2AES.

It was the first attempt and it worked with Morpheus! Might make it look cleaner in the future but happy with it for now.

Very very nice!! Thank you for posting!

Now I know what those extra holes in the Pi2AES case are for! :grinning:
