I treat it like a weekend project when Iā€™m trying to figure out which recording I like. My main resources are Classical Today reviews and Talk Classical forum to get a short list of recordings, and then Iā€™ll listen to parts of each movement to see if thereā€™s anything that annoys me enough to drop it off the list.

Once I have a short list of the short list, Iā€™ll listen to the whole thing.

In most cases, a conductor and orchestra combination are unique enough to figure out which recording Iā€™m listening to, but if they recorded the piece several times, Iā€™ll double check Discogs, sometimes resorting to comparing the recording time of each track.

As with audio equipment, everyone seems adamant that their favorite is the best ever, so it helps to have an inkling of your own preferences (size of orchestra, speed of playing, quality of recording etc) because youā€™ll often find yourself listening to someoneā€™s recommendation wondering why it sounds meh to you.

I tend to like smaller ensembles playing at a brisk pace, so the Janine Jansen Four Seasons that others have mentioned is one of my favorites, along with Rachel Podgerā€™s historical instrument performance. I also tend to like a bit of ā€œbiteā€ in the sound rather than smoothness, e.g. when I was trying to figure out which Bruckner symphony recordings I liked (way more than a weekend project because I was also new to Bruckner LOL), I ended up liking Jochum and the Staatskapelle Dresden, partly because the brass section of that orchestra seemed uncouth, compared to other orchestras, and something about that appealed to me.

Sounds like a good time to make a classical discussion thread!

This recording is nuts. Only a chamber group too!

@Veritas My favorite track is #2 in g minorā€¦movement iii.
PS I understand she put that group together and her brother is in it.

It is crazy to get that kind of almost orchestral sound from that recording, it is very neat that there are numerous family members within the musicians playing.

Its one of those rare recordings where you get a sense of personal emotional engagement, perhaps that was elevated by the family presence.

I have watched the original of that ā€œremasterā€ on YT before. The remaster is interesting, at least on Airpods!

Been enjoying Kandace for some time now. This is one I often come back to.
AMHD, this for reference.

I was five when this was released in 1983, but being the youngest of three (with five years separating each of us) I was exposed to a lot of music (of varying genres).

Still one of my favorite genres.

The guy with the neck vein has a good voice. Very soulful.
(Reminds me of Tom Jones. Very cool cover)
