Schiit DAC/Source thread, Bifrost / Gungnir / Yggdrasil / Urd

As always, a hugely entertaining read! Thanks for re-posting this, I’d likely have missed it since I mostly can’t stand all the endless BS on headfi.

Sounds like some really interesting things in the pipeline, and I confess I have a definite soft spot for Schiit. Jason, Mike, and minions “mission” of affordable, high quality audio is easy to root for and get behind.

In terms of Schiit DAC lineup I think this makes sense. It fits nicely between BF2 and Yggy pricing. There’s a market at that price point for sure. But Qutest is stiff competition.

I would look at the Holo Cyan 2 as well for that range

Updated graph from SBAF. Includes Yggy MIB and BF2/64.

Not mine. Credits to SBAF user.

Gotta love arbitrary graphs and meaningless units!

How about we normalize “Treble F’kery” with cost of the DAC? Then we get a new figure of merit “F’kery - per - dollar”

Lol, although the graphs are arbitrary, the differences displayed with the OG BF2 and the BF2/64 match my experience very closely. Though, I feel the graph is being sort of “kind” to the 2/64.

Still trying to figure out …plankton?

This. I get Treble-F’kery. That makes sense. But what in the world is Plankton?

Another term for microdetail is how I see it

Plankton is the worst made up audio term, it’s a f’ing microorganism!

Another useless graphical display of data, though I’m giving this one a pass as it’s completely subjective here.

Agreed, I’ve seen that term thrown around there and I’m still WTF? I’ve never seen an explanation of what the hell they’re talking about.

Frustratingly meaningless! @hifiDJ is probably closest, but who the fuck knows.

Makes it hard to take some of SBAF seriously now, especially with some of the gear pairings and recommendations these days. (Like a Piety with a Raal CA-1a?)

I am mostly a lurker there, and take with a grain of salt… It seems that some of the people who had much greater credibility (like @torq?) no longer participate, though some of it is interesting…

You should take every opinion with a grain of salt.

Plankton I believe they use to encapsulate the nuances of reproduction, it’s basically microdetail, but encompasses more that that, having said that, it’s used inconsistently even on SBAF, the problem with many audiophile terms is if they can’t be explained without confusion in black and white they are open to interpretation.
Even terms like bass slam are ambiguous, so what hope have we in trying to agree on what resolving means?

It’s one of the frustrating parts of the subjective part of the hobby, it’s difficult to express what we hear and what we like, one of the many reasons objectivist view points are so appealing. Condense it to a number then you know a is better than b.

I’m convinced that the most productive activity an audiophile can partake in is to listen critically with friends ad a handful of tracks as they make changes to gear then discuss what they heard.

We don’t have to agree on the music choice, we don’t have to agree on the sound preferences or tastes. We just have to discuss what we hear and the changes introduces by whatever we changed in the chain.

When I first got into Hifi 35+ years ago. I was fortunate enough to be at university with 1/2 a dozen or so others who got into the “hobby” at the same time, and spent large portions of our living expenses on Hifi. We spent insane amounts of time listening to each others systems and discussing the nuances, lending out pieces, listening to stuff we wouldn’t be able to afford for 10 years at the local Hifi brick and mortar. Which we visited multiple times a week.

It was an awesome experience, not one that most people get, but yes I absolutely agree being able to listen and discuss together is invaluable and discussing on forums is unfortunately a poor substitute because you miss out on common experiences and normalizing terms.

Have any of you guys used the Yggy GS2 or A1?
Im thinking of geting that to pair with the v222. I was using the 2541. Currently using the Wandla. I want more bass.

Yggy MIB upgrade is available.

Has anyone heard one? Vs OG A2?

I didn’t realize Schiit has completely stopped selling the A2. They stopped selling the upgrade quite a while ago, but it was at least available as a full DAC purchase. Now that looks like it’s gone too. Time to cling to my A2 Yggy like life itself depends on it!

That said, I would really like to hear a review comparing A2 to MiB…

It seems on Headfi there is a user who has both or SBAF.

Thanks for posting that.

It’s hard to take a lot of SBAF too seriously. There’s a lot of random opinions from people who are cheerleaders, and who do questionable pairings of gear (IMO; like a Raal headphone with a Piety amp, for example).

In any case, I’ll be curious what you think of your GS2/A1.

I also hope some reputable people (whose ear I trust more) will compare a combination of MIB/OG A2/GS2 Yggy.

Yggy + GS2 is here!
What a big boy. Cannot imagine old case Yggy.
