I’m pretty sure Schiit has said that they won’t ever make a streamer, I remember reading that in a few of their Schiit Happened posts. In the one from yesterday they said that a Schiit Pi device would never happen. I don’t recall why they are so against streaming but I’d be surprised if they ever added a networking input to any of their devices.
It is THE reason, even more substantive of a reason for a smaller independent manufacturer. IMO, as long as suitable alternatives at the price point are available it’s a win/win as other streaming focused vendors like Pi2 Design folks can happily coexist.
Urd arrived a couple hours ago and have been enjoying it so far
I’ve since moved it off of my audio rack and onto my desk underneath my monitor. It’s going to serve as a digital hub between my gaming pc and my audio system. At least that’s the plan but it could change if I have issues with noise. The setup is PC with Matrix USB pcie card to Urd usb input. Urd coax out to a Monoprice dac/amp that I use with my PC and AES out to my Bricasti MC1.
I had a small issue where the usb out of the Urd wouldn’t work into the Monoprice unit but would work into the MC1. Perhaps the Monoprice is not UAC2 or needs drivers I’m not sure but with it connected over USB, YouTube would freeze and say “audio renderer error” and the Urd wouldn’t consistently play to other outputs. At one point the Urd just stopped working and I had to power cycle it. I can get around this issue by using coax into the Monoprice unit.
Cosmetically the metal piece that is stuck on the end of the CD drive is a bit crooked. The drive itself is straight though. It’s a little annoying but it doesn’t effect the functionality. I think it’s glued on so I can’t fix it easily.
Despite those minor issues it’s been working well. CD playback is easy, it makes a little noise after inserting a disc but once it’s playing I don’t really notice any noise. You can easily switch between cd playback to one of the usb inputs. It’s pretty seamless. It doesn’t seem to output much heat but will leave it on for awhile and see what happens.
I haven’t had any time to judge the audio quality of the cd player / as a DDC. But I will update as I continue to use it.
Urd has been on since I got it and it doesn’t get warm at all. I was browsing the Schiit Happened Head-Fi thread and apparently the crooked front piece is a common issue but seems to have been caused in shipping. I reached out to Schiit support and hopefully they can provide me with a solution.
It’s usually double sided tape for those sorts of things, you might be able to heat the adhesive with a heat gun, and straighten it, but I’d be careful because the tray mechanism is partially plastic, and you definitely don’t want to warp that.
I keep wanting to see that piece in black.
Think I’m going to have it to send it back since the front piece is annoying cosmetically and I might as well get a product that looks perfect since it’s new. I tried to adjust the front piece myself but it is stuck on very securely. See the pictures below. There might be adhesive as well but there are slots for the metal piece to slide into but it wouldn’t budge when I tried to reallign it myself.
I used a level and the drive tray itself appeared to be level at least level to the top case of the Urd although my desk is not as level as I thought

Functionality is perfect but I don’t want to be stuck with something that is a bit of an eye sore. Unfortunately I’m on the east coast and it needs to go to CA but I’m sure it will be worth it in the end.
Took a little while, with about 2 weeks of shipping between east and west coast plus being at Schiit for over a week but the Urd is back and drive tray is looking not perfect but very close to straight. Most important is that if I glance at it, it doesn’t bug me at all like the previous one did.
Looks pretty good from the pic. Glad it was fixed (mostly). I wish the tray was black. It would hide any offsets much better.
What is the version of this Yggy ?
Starts with an A. If I get this is going to be 750$ to get A2?
Edit: Seems the upgrade price went up 100$ (850$)
Edit 2: Never mind, someone reached me on headfi to sell me “his” Yggy. Found the pictures online. Probably a comprised account…
More is Better
Cool read. At 2.6k I’ll be interested to see how this stacks up.
I wonder if they are just done with ideas on the DAC side, seems like these different flavors are side dishes to appeal to different segments who want better measurements, don’t care about measurements, etc.
With the OG Yggy, they definitely can rest their laurels for making a great DAC based on vintage/re-purposed MB chips, which compete with more expensive R2R models.
I think Mike Moffat has stated in the past they don’t know how to make an obviously better DAC without charging a lot more. Which is about what I’d expect, the Schiit DAC’s all have obvious roots in the Theta designs Mike did there.
They have a price point, DAC technology isn’t evolving at some break neck pace, and most of the sound isn’t in the underlying mechanism anyway. Mike Moffat isn’t likely to suddenly decide that NOS DAC’s are better or make some other revelatory change.
I guess the BiFrost 2 was something of a revelation at the price point.
He mentions a More is More option maybe down the road but it’ll cost much more. Not sure what they could pull off with a higher price point.
I feel like the OG (A2) Yggy is a bit of an icon / classic, along with the OG Bifrost 2. The sound signature from these is unique and enjoyable for me.
At least in part because of chip shortages we’ve gotten LiM, MiL, and MiB version of Yggy, and the 2/64 version of the Bifrost. I’ve not personally appreciated the changes in sound with these new versions (I’ve only compared the OG versions with LiM Yggy and 2/64 Bifrost). The “imperfections” in the OG versions are what make them special to me. Nothing else really sounds like them.
I wonder if Schiit is getting nervous about the future success of their Multibit DACs having to move away from the OG DAC chips. Reading the story about the new MiB Yggy, I got the sense that Schiit is scrambling to put a design in place that can replicate the popularity of the original versions. It sounds like they expect the OG chips from Analog Devices to become completely unavailable.
All of that said, it will be very interesting to try the new MiB DAC boards! Fun to try new things
That’s the vibe I’m getting as well.
I think Jason has mentioned that they’ve been working on FPGA’s as an option, so I wonder if that’s going to be their ultimate solution to AD chip shortages.
It’ll be interesting to see what they decide to release.
Can anyone here vouch for the single ended connection of the Bifrost 2/64? I want to pair it with a tube amp
