Schiit DAC/Source thread, Bifrost / Gungnir / Yggdrasil / Urd

I begged for this months ago here or at HFG. Makes so much biz sense. Real basic power amp in midsize chassis. Pass through outputs. Bridgeable. Selectable 80hz hpf/lpf. Grab two. Headamp, DAC. You’re ready to rock.

Your monoblock in a mini chassis idea is fun too.

That’s exactly what I did with my original MMB (v2). It’s great for that, and my 2.1 TV audio setup is pretty sweet for a not very expensive but enjoyable rig.

This is actually a pretty good piece regarding “Wall of Sound” that Phil Spector is credited with creating.

The article also mentions compression artifacts created by Spector’s method.

Interesting read for those interested in a little bit of music/recording history.

Edit: Forgot to link the article.

Very interesting, thanks for posting it!

I’m going to have to go back and listen to some of the recordings mentioned in the article. :+1:

My pleasure!

Learning about the music we enjoy is part of the fun of this hobby.

Hi guys!
Is the yggy A1 gen 5 worth it at 1400$?
I’m passively looking to get an yggy to replace my bf2. Maybe update it to A2 +. think going to get the v550 as my end game amp.

Currently have the bf2 OG with douk pro U2. So, won’t use the unison.
Amps: RNHP, v222, and v281.

You can get an OG A2 (the one you really want) for around $1700 give or take with some patience.

This is one is an A2. I bought a black one from them about a month ago for $1650 and it was essentially brand new

Edit to say they do charge whatever applicable tax and shipping, but they did ship it super fast and I’m very happy!

I have been watching TMR for awhile. Thank you!

The pro move is to find A1 for $1100 or less and then stalk the internet for used A2 boards from people that did the LIM/MIL swap. A2 Yggy for $1300.

Gumby staging and clarity feels better than a yggy og, smoother, hits harder, with more subbass. Yggy feels a bit muddy in comparison with more depth but a hazy stage and softer impact, but its a little more detailed than gumby.

Gumby to me felt like a true Bf2 og upgrade, exactly the same traits and soul just more extended at both ends with more drama and impact. But now the gumby is discountinued. Maybe moving to Aes and a ddc will fix the staging and clarity of the yggy? I’ll try that with an SU6.

Is this an a1 or a2 yggy? And unison or gen5 usb? And an a1 or a2 gumby lol?

If this is a gumby a2 vs yggy a2 I can see how the gumby would come off cleaner overall, different signature, although imo the yggy a2 is closer to the bf2 than the gumby a2. Would try a ddc if you can and see how things change

Yes its the latest yggy a2 og and gumby a2 unison.
Using a wyred usb recovery for both. When I use the ddc should I also use the wyred usb before it?

I’d try it in and out of the chain and see how it goes

Do you mean a Schiit Wyrd, or something else?

Is it the newest Yggdrasil+? I’m curious if the SE outputs have improved over the previous generation. I think it was a popular consensus that the Balanced outputs were significantly better than the SE.

Thanks!

I think the plus is a chassis upgrade and not an internal one…

The LIM and MIL have revised the SE outputs, it’s stated somewhere on the site, but I recall (could be sketchy) that is didn’t apply to the OG.

LIM & MIL: Analog Stage: Integrated, using LME49724 differential stage

OG: Analog Stage: Fully discrete, DC coupled Class A FET buffers optimized for high current output and fully discrete, Class A FET summing stages for single-ended output

Yeah, I was wondering if anyone has actually listened to a Yggdrasil+ and noticed any differences.
