Roon Runners Corner

The Rock is just a computer, running a cut down Linux version, with Roon on it.
You won’t get any more isolation running a DAC off it’s usb than running it of your computer.
Though there might be a small win because it’ll be a lower powered device.
People run rocks for the Sam e reason they run dedicated servers for anything, you stick it in a corner and forget about it.

If you’re looking to isolate from your computer, you want a streamer, and options vary by cost, and output options. For <500 you’ve got various Pi+Shield combos, The Ifi network player. For under 1K I like the Rendu’s, at 2K there are a number of options, and a few at 5K+

But you want to balance the expenditure with the rest of your system.

I haven’t tried myself but yes, this is possible.

With a streamer, you’ll still need Roon running somewhere so if that is not on a NUC, you’ll still need the computer on.

Thank you for mentioning this @Hazi59 :+1:
I had to disconnect my core, drag it over to a monitor and hook it up so that I could go in and see what was going on. I was having trouble pulling up the ROON core software , I messed around for a few minutes and in the end simply properly powered down the unit, then did a re-boot and another power down.
Afterwards I reached out from and endpoint and messed around for half an hour to verify it was working. NO idea WHY this simple power down worked but I’ve managed to get it to work like normal again without going through as much trouble as you. You gave me the idea though so thank you buddy👍

It’s new Roon Release day!

It’s nice that they’ve slowed the release cycle down, my feeling is the quality has improved. Knock-on-wood

I’ve updated my ROCK and remotes to the new version, so far so good…

They screwed the pooch on the recent listening time displayed big time and it took them two updates to fix that. That being said my Rock has 45 days now up and running without a hitch. It’s at the point that I don’t even think about it.

Trying to access my rock storage and Roon says you need to use internet explorer on windows to get there. I remember using it before but I can’t get explorer to even work now lol. It just goes to edge. Trying to add some music that i recently ripped.

Unless I’m missing something they need to update this and move on from explorer.

it should just “work” with something like the following on a windows driver search. It should also be the same within Roon remote client as you point it to the location.

\rock\Data\Storage\InternalStorage

Ok thanks.

I tried that and I can see the folder and files but I’m not able to add additional files. I was thinking the other route via explorer allowed drag and drop.

I’ll keep messing with it. Appreciate the help.

When I want to add music to my database I just drag and drop it to the roon client :man_shrugging:t2:

I can see the folders via edge or chrome but I can’t actually drop anything.

Figured it out. Was able to access it via file explorer and pulled up the storage folder that way. Dumb! Been a good while since I last did it. Thanks for the help!

But, @orrman is correct, you can just drag and drop files into the roon app.

Method #1 Drag And Drop on to the Roon application on Mac/PC

You can always drag and drop music files into Roon on Mac and PC. Roon will copy these files to the storage locations you’ve configured on your Core.
If you’ve configured Roon to watch music in more than one folder, Roon will ask which folder you want to save to, and will then copy your files to the Roon Imports folder, where it saved to a folder based on the time of import and the device imported from. If you’d rather manage the folder hierarchy yourself, go on to Method #2.

Method #2: Importing To Network Folder

This is the method just discussed earlier in the thread, and is my personal preferred method to keep things neat & tidy. The drag n drop files has very little control and can get messy quick.

I didn’t know you could literally drop them in the storage area in the app. It looks like you have to add a folder or file location. And I wanted to use the same one on my nuc/rock. Well shit that makes it easier. It’ll save those files dropped in the onboard storage of the rock?

I’ve always used the rock/data way…

You can. I’ve done it for example I was testing DSD file playback so I dl’d a couple to the desktop a pc I have the roon app installed on as a remote, dropped the files right inside the app and it put them into storage. But, roon ended up creating a separate album for each track and did not follow my conventions etc etc - I did not like how messy it was but if you aren’t fussy, or I suppose you could edit trac names and create folders ahead of time prior to dropping into roon, but if doing all that why not just use the file explore method - so much easier. To me anyway YMMV.

this is my preferred way

Ok, thanks for the info.

I guess I didn’t look too much into it because I rarely do it, just went I get a handful of CDs to rip. Just do them all at once.

Its really easy on the innuos because I just slide it in and it does the rest. I don’t wait to rip with it because I don’t have to mess with roon or files.

I have a PC dedicated to ripping where I have an external ripper attached. Rip everything there store in a directory and then I just copy everything into roon when ready. Same methodology for buying albums from HD tracks or qobuz I dl the files extract, organize into folders using my naming conventions etc. then copy over to roon when ready.

Honestly lately I’ve just been streaming more - so much easier as I get lazier with age…

Yeah, I agree. I just do this when its a album I like and listen all the way through.

I’m with @Delta9K, I always copy new albums into the network folder.

I initially tried dragging and dropping using the application and Roon screwed up the metadata and the way the music was organized so badly that I had to delete it all and start again. Using file explorer gives me complete control over the folder structure.
