Riviera thread, AIC / AFC / APL / AFM / Levante

The AIC build is very impressive. Feels like a tank. I don’t love the the dimensions (think WA33 from the side and without the tubes) but a small price to pay.

It sounds really good on a first listen. Clearly powerful in an effortless presentation while still hitting hard but super easy to listen to.

Current chain is K50 with Tubulus Concentus V2 I2S to Wavedream Signature with DHC Prion4S XLRs to AIC. Utopia OG with Viking Weave cable. Tube is the Telefunken G73r. Listening from the front headphones output on low gain (dead silent noise floor)

Does this combo hit your goal of progressing from the MZ3 and Utopia?

Too early to say. It’s different that’s for sure. I’ll be selling the Pre in any case to help fund this purchase but it’s quite easy to get again in the future if I want to which was a consideration.

@Camus also worth noting that everything around my AIC is on the more neutral(ish) side of things and I was told this specific tube also pushes for more linearity overall. I’m going to try two other tubes I have at some point and maybe that’ll make it more or less similar to the LTA.

It’s absolutely nice that there’s only one tube in the entire chain but you can definitely hear it. It’s refreshing coming from gear like WA33, Z10E, WA23 and MZ3 with anywhere between 4 to 10 tubes

That is great to hear, and hell yes to only one tube!!

Is the amp inherently warm?

You’re lucky it only takes one because that’s a $500 tube. I haven’t heard one myself but it’s the one that head-fi tube-roller Wes ended up with as his ultimate 12au7 in his Pendant, before switching to another amp, and he loved a neutral sound.

If you don’t like it, you shouldn’t have a problem selling it.

I’m very jealous, having rolled multiple combinations of 12au7, 5814, 6189, 12bh7, 5751 and 12ax7 in my UL+ over the last few weeks. And they’re all pairs, which makes experimenting twice as expensive.

I got it as part of the deal but my comparisons are 2a3s and 274 or 5u4g all costing much more and needing pairs or quads or even one Takatsuki being over $1K… part of the tube market is insane when you think about the cost for what is basically a consumable

(xposted from the Spatial Audio thread)

Hi all, very interested in purchasing a pair of Spatial X3 speakers which i can get second hand for a great price. However i’m not ready to commit to a new amp for these just yet, so Im wondering if my trusty Riviera AIC-10 amp can power them well. It’s rated at 10W/8 ohm but i heard that’s very conservative and it can output more. Do you guys think it could drive the X3s?

Thanks

@NickMimi has a pair of triode masters which are less sensitive and have higher impedance and he drives them perfectly with fleapower SET amps.

Awesome thanks for confirming. I’ll add impressions here once I get them.

The first thing I noticed plugging the AIC in was the weight, every sound every note has a satisfying weight, nothing is light, but its able to do that without being sluggish at all. Even the low level sounds are weighty.

Didn’t know how much low level sound was buried under. Its like the low level has its own lane and the high level its own while both having their independent authority playing together without interference.

The other thing was the space, damn this is immersive, when the recording is big it sounds huge, and when its small, you are in a sound bag.

The noisy music transformed into a properly layered music, the details and layers that came out of this noise…

This amp taught my ears what is organic, just sounds so natural like yes that’s how it sounds in real… Timber is best I heard so far.

How low you wanna go? Digs so deep with again; a “weighty” sub.

There is no artificial texturing, it’s textured and smooth at the same time, sounds seamless.
And, what is harsh? This amp is so forgiving. Such an allrounder suitable for any genre.

It elevated my d8kp above what it used to be. On my previous amps I didn’t feel this much of a gap between it and the rest of my HPs, but with this, so obvious. How technical the higher tiered HPs are if you drive them properly…

The only thing I kinda felt I needed was a little more treble, the V550 was good in that. And maybe a little more slam, but I think that’s fixable with tubes.

All of this was with the stock JJ tube, he included a Telefunken tube so I’ll switch in a week or so.

My worry about amps came to an end, stopping all Flavor Of The Month temptations and my brain is thanking me. The dac hunt begins.

Awesome writeup!
The G73R will fix all your treble desires. AIC responds well to rolling and with only one tube, it’s easy to switch and keep a bunch.

Happy listening and welcome to the club!

Easiest case opening of my life. Just few screws on top.

How should i remove the tube? Im worried if i brute force it i will break it. Its kinda tight and i don’t see it rotating only pull out.

Edit: nevermind i pulled it out with a wiggle.

The Aic should ship with the Telefunken tube and not JJ. The difference is just amazing, all I can say is full of life and soul, more extended at both ends I don’t feel I need more treble or slam or punch like I did with the JJ, and it’s more nuanced. Just beautiful and balanced sounding. Kept saying “wow and shit” many times.

I don’t understand how a piece of glass can change the whole thing lol but I’m not complaining. The engraving on it is ECC82 and its shorter than the stock JJ so I’m not sure that’s NOS or normal or what, will just buy extra of the same as my default and standard sound from this amp.

I don’t know what will happen when I upgrade my dac, all this goodness paired with a yggy.

Which Telefunken did you sub in?

I asked the seller on the exact one, I’ll update when he answers me. He said he tried alot of them but found this one to be the most balanced for his 1266tc and susvara.

Edit: It’s a NOS ECC802S

The sense of silence this thing can create when things stop playing before they play again… What a haunting background so real, and can’t get over how beautiful the treble is…

Would love to hear an AIC at some point but more and more as you progress that simple phrase, blacker blacks becomes almost a throwaway comment. It is so important however, because of the implications that blacker blacks come with and it’s almost a disservice with industry reviewers when they stop there because it really improves everything.
