For the past 3 years and a bit or so Mon’s been showing me some music. Some of it was linked in hoardes of new music each Monday and some of it was recommended every once in a while when we talked about music. We usually talk about these things through personal messages or phone calls but I thought it would be nice to kind of open this up just incase anyone else who wants to listen to something new wants to follow along.
I laid in bed and listened to the whole 24 tracks (actually 21 I guess since I didn’t technically listen to the last 3 since they were remixes and I wasn’t interested lol!) Loved the album! Guess it’s to be expected considering the rapper is Del the funky homosapien but seriously good shit! Love the whole concept of the album too which is like outer space, alien invasion related type of thing. I typically listen to alot of pop, ballads, instrumentals or music that sounds deep but I don’t really know what’s the message in it LOL. This one tho was basically storytelling, really painted a big picture of what was going on and generally was super dope in beats, lyrics and general concept. Also this legit feels like one of those albums that you wanna listen as a whole since they kind of connect, have some doalogues in between too (like kanyes og albums)
Generally just a huge fan of this album! Also stand out song: Virus
Edit 2: Changed title from “M0Ns Music Recommendation Corner” to Music Recommendation Corner" as I think that’s more productive
Well this is an interesting thread to wake up to lol. So I typically suck at trying to recommend music, I think it’s because of the wide range of shit I listen to coupled with my lack of understanding of genres (I stopped trying since I didn’t really care or find sorting by genre worthwhile), but I feel like almost every time I’ve tried to recommend music to someone it’s been an absolute miss and I don’t know why lol. But irritatingly (for me), if I just let someone hear some of the stuff I’ve been listening to recently, typically they’ll find something in there they like.
Now that this thread exists, and has my name attached (even though it wasn’t started by me, and the person that started it absolutely knows I hate threads that revolve around a single person), I guess I’ll use it. But contrary to the title of the thread, I won’t be giving any recommendations, and instead will be treating it more as a listening log or more accurately just posting what I find interesting that I’ve been listening to lately.
I will warn that there will be massive variety between what’s posted here, there isn’t any logical progression or anything, and I’m not promising anything to be “good”, but if I do post something that does mean I’ve enjoyed listening to it recently. Some of it might be traditionally great, some of it might be an “acquired taste”, and some of it might simply be something you have to turn your brain off to enjoy lol
Typically I don’t really like to talk about music since it’s something that I just enjoy and would rather just listen to it, but seems like it could be fun so I might as well
Edit: I want to change the title but I won’t mess with someone else’s thread
Maybe I’m just being a positive pete here but I will say that it took three years but recently alot of the stuff you show me has been pretty good shit.
Love it, it’s what i really hoped this would be tbh. Because I didn’t want to create this thread for u to try ur best to give recommendations necessarily lol. I created this thread to basically do what we usually do, when we converse about music but in an open form so that other people can follow along if they are interested! And i think you just logging some stuff that you might find interesting, or interesting enough to generally hit me up and be like “hey check this album out” tends to be at least worth a listen!
Feel free to change title name to maybe “MON’s music log, or M0N’s music playlist corner” or anything that dosen’t specify it’s something you cosign, put your reputation on etc LOL
Honestly created this as a bit of an open field readable podcast, just like in messages and calls you and I talk about music that is worth sharing this would be a more open one that other’s can read too.
Possibly but that was basically just shotgunning anything new that came out that I found interesting, and more recently just randomly playing parts of my library lol, barely any of that was explicitly “hey go listen to this album I think you’ll really like it” sorta thing
Fair enough
Well to start off just this morning I was listening to the album (moreso compilation) Testpressings by Demdike Stare
It’s a pretty fun industrial project with various types of electronic whatever mixed in, each track carries a different theme, sometimes it’s DnB, sometimes it’s more hardcore, sometimes it’s drone like, etc. It’s a darker themed album, just full of interesting instrumentals almost. The production is a bit dirty but that’s part of the sound, and it still offers decent space and atmosphere to the tracks even if they are a bit blown out.
And what stands out about this compilation is that Burial has been able to create a more coherent and convincing project than any of the actual albums they have done. It’s really impressive how well tracks are arranged, it’s almost like over the years it was planned for them to be compiled like this. Starts off more laid back atmospheric and ambient and gradually comes to more upbeat uk garage? It’s an interesting listen and sounds more like a soundtrack to be honest
Last one I got (mostly) through this morning was Gymnosphere: Song Of The Rose - Music for the Well-Tuned Piano by Jordan De La Sierra
It’s long, and it’s a bit repetitive, but I personally do enjoy the concept of the thing and it hasn’t really gotten boring either, well executed minimalism
I’d say you’ve been not an absolute miss but a hit or miss. It’s just that the stuff you share is all over the place. But the factor tying them all, is they sound supremely well recorded. Don’t know if that’s coincidence or maybe it’s an unconscious choice on your part. But I have listened to or sample through everything and at least 1/3 have remained on my local library. lol
Ah like stuff in the listening to tonight share the music you’re currently into thread? I tend to make sure there’s somewhat of a quality bar there, sometimes, but I do listen to some absolute garbage, so you might start to see that pop up here more as I just post day to day stuff (assuming I actually continue to do this)
Just as an example, real story btw. A while back he showed me a very particular song and I had access to a flac version of it and also ended up youtubing it. When I first heard the song I was so disgusted by how thick and convoluted it sounded (not to mention it was some sort of rap with probably crap lyrics lol) and it just sounded TERRIBLE. Then I listened to the song on YouTube out of curiosity, AND I PREFERED IT HAHAHAHAHA. It was because it was so low quality in YouTube that it sounded less thick, much more stomachable but stil crap.
Mon is single handedly responsible for making me much less judgemental with music, because he lowered my standards so much of what I call music is that I’m generally more forgiving of most music.
I’ll be listening to some of this later today, specially the last song on ur description seems like the safest pick for me lol. Also still need to listen to “full of life consequences” and “mix and match” album you hit me up with!
Oh and “edan” too
Yeah you can enjoy a lot more like that. Ive been listening to a lot more genres and artists i wouldnt of tried before just by saying “f it” and giving it due time.
Outside of general genres like metal, classical etc etc i just dont know or care if its swedish death metal or finnish black metal or whatever. There are 2 DJs i listen to on twitch late night and they always give what trance house drum genre theyre on that night but to me its all electronic bops.
Anything older country I’m ok with. But any country that’s come out in like the last 30 years that’s been classified as country has mostly been a no go for me lol
Got to use the 2ch for some hours today, typically that’s prime time for classical listening
Beethoven’s 5th & 7th, Mahler’s 2nd, Haydn emperors quartet, and halfway through Mozart’s die zauberflote, all awesome stuff, all on sacd of course lol
This. The older stuff where you realise what made Les Paul legendary is the real stuff. There needs to be a new totally different genre for anything new.
I really like classical, but I also absolutely hate trying to look for it and the accompanying hunt for all the different variations and performances and whatever, really offputting to me, so I really listen to it less than I should lol
@M0N currently listening to the Loona album, and i see what u mean about the recordings being pretty nice pretty nice but im kinda mehh on the album so far
