I recieved mine today and am looking if there is anyway to fit it on the desk next to the pc, even if it is a little bit of a balancing act on the BF2.
This was mainly a purchase to see how it does with my LCD-2.2 PF. My thoughts will be jotted down later but I expect some good takes to come.
A quick question for the tube guys out there. The unit was listed as selling with the original tubes, as the previous owner had some exotic tube and socket combo.
To my knowledge the stock tubes are electro harmonix. When I popped the package open I had something a little different, and i think maybe the previous owner bought it from someone else not knowing what stock was.
Going by the package, it seems that I may have made out a little bit on the deal but Ill refer to those here. Are these Amperex 6dj8 considered better than stock? And l, most importantly, are they straight plug in compatible?
Upscale sells those tubes at $80 a piece, so yes that’s a win.
6DJ8/EC88 are different designations for 6922’s so yes just plug them in.
I can’t say how that specific tube changes the sound, but you’ll probably find very few people claiming that the stock electroharmonics are better than anything NOS.
When I owned my MLP, I tube rolled a bit. My favorite tubes were the Siemens 7308 (which are available at upscaleaudio.com), and the Amperex PQ Gold Pin 6922.
Yes I heard the amperex gold pin, gold lions, and raytheondragonscaleandtoothadapters spoken about often with the MLP. Those all hit from $90 to a few hundred so I think, for once, I lucked out.
It looks like I really lucked out. I didnt get the $800 paired tubes that the site owner only had seen 3 times over the past 22 years and describes as museum pieces, but these do seem to be audiophile focused.
Ive visited many, many tube sites but you check that one out and you know its on point. They even have a butt ugly tubes section!
He’s also responsive to email, I’ve bought a fair number of tubes from Brent Jesse over the last couple of years, and I’ve exchanged emails with him to ask for suggestions on tubes that I am less familiar with.
lol I dont regret it aat all and you saved me cash on both pieces of gear so I’m very thankful for that. just kinda wish the stock tubes were just better. swapping to the stock tubes now just to remind me of the differences and damn the change even though its not huge adds a good amount to my enjoyment
He reminds me very much of those guys that just know everything about a car model and each year’s quirks and each submodel’s story. If you ever watch Graveyard Carz the main guy is one of those too.
How much space should I give the MLP for heat? I want to put it on my desk where it will be next to my pc on one side with a wall behind it but open elsewhere. It will also need to sit on my BF2 in that position. Am I good or am I making a mini heater?
I’d ensure the top is clear, it’s not right next to something and it’s not sitting on something that would prevent airflow at the bottom.
They do get hot, it isn’t something to worry about generally.
It should be good. I had mine sitting between a speaker and a pc riser with only ~1 inch of space on either side and never had issues. It’s a good idea to get some tallish feet though to minimize the heat coming off the BF2. LP has cooling vents on the bottom and any heat off the BF2 is going to go directly in there.
