It would be really cool if you guys could share your particular expierence with your lawton mod(s), because there are many combinations it can be interesring to know how the sound changed for you.
I dont have one myself, I could mod my emu teak bamboo but I like the sound as is.
I really enjoyed having the Lawton cups on mine, I got mine with them so didnât have experience with emu cups until I borrowed some. I used the ebony on mine but it just sounded really hollow and boring to me in comparison
On my Denon D2000 I have the Emu Rosewood on it and on the Fostex Th x00 I have the Emu Ebonys on it that have replaced the Mahogany.
The Rosewood is livelier, richer, especially the bass and mids are also good.
Depending on the music, the trebles tend to shrill slightly above the zenith.
But otherwise great cups.
I had a bit of a rollercoaster with the Ebony.
The bass was not quite as rich as with the Rosewood, but it was concise. the mids were similar to the Rosewood and the highs are a little less harsh.
Almost better than the Rosewood.
I found the Ebony a little less lively compared to the Rosewood.
They say the Emu Walnut is a mix of both woods.
However, the headphones are very susceptible to pad changes.
The top model from Dekoni was the worst.
Cheap replacement pads from England were very good for rosewood, but not for ebony.
I left the pads on the Rosewood as they were because they were good.
With the Ebony I tried the Yaxi Alcantara and they were a bit W-shaped in sound, and were sometimes a bit boring. With the Lawton pads, I got a little more V-shape, more life, and more solid tuning.
I have not tried more pads at the moment.
The Zmf pads variant with the lambskin is still supposed to be good.
But a bit expensive for a simple try, I think.
In all pad attempts I have the Dekoni Attunion rings in it as well as the Lawton Mod stage 1.
If I had found something comparable in terms of dynamic driver headphones, I would probably give the Fostex Th x00.
I would keep the Denon D2000 because I restored it back then and it is absolutely the most fun.
They are generally good, but if you change something it can end in a dilemma.
I echo your views on the d2000, I really like mine a lot more than the emu with emu cups on it. Out of the cups I tried, I also loved the Bamboo on it too.
The only piece I will add is that if you see any posts about pad changesâŠALWAYS confirm whether they used an attenuation ring or not. I have found the majority of the time when other praise a certain pad, they completely leave that part out. The differences with and without an attenuation ring are huge (whether it is the Dekoni one, or a homemad/DIY one).
I had a set of TH610âs and did the Lawton tuning kit trying to clean up/clear up the sound. I was not overly impressed and the Lawton cups were pretty expensive, so I just sold them on. I just used the stock pads as I found them very comfortable.
I work a modded TH610. I did the driver tuneup chamberâs and pads from Lawton. I chose the Hawaiian Koa itâs a type 2 on the Lawton tone wheel. I donât use any attenuation rings with the pads. For now Iâm happy with it as it is.
With Emu teak + bamboo cups, from the pads I tested so far ZMF ori suede no attenuation rings does it for my taste, I like the forward mids and clean bass, treble as bright as I like it but lacks finesse (compared to other great headphones)
Now im wondering if I can get better perfomance with a level 1 lawton, I wouldnt mind a cleaner sound, but im worried that the damping takes away some character along with the resonances.
I read the whole headphones thread it was very useful, but no one there lawton modded an emu teak.
Hello,
If you are so happy, then leave it as it is.
Then I wouldnât do anything else to it.
Itâs usually better that way if it sounds right to you.
I can still remember the Mahogany which was quite sharp to my ears and the Dampkit has softened and rounded it off a bit.
Remember itâs subjective whatâs right for you may not be right for others and vice versa.
The headphones are quite sensitive to changes.
more factually good advice, thanks⊠Its just that little devil that tells me âbut what if it sounds better after the modâ, but yeah better to wait till my second foster for modding.
Edit: although the treble could use a bit of softening, its a cheap reversible mod ill still consider it
Hmm yes as the cups are from Emu and the steam kit is from Lawton.
Itâs going to be a bit tricky.
Because Mark probably doesnât know the cups from Emu, he might not be able to give a 100% answer.
On the other hand, if you buy his mugs, he can tell you 100% where and what.
Emu himself may not know anything about a Lawton.
The other thing is that it makes a damn difference if you put foam in the cups or not.
My personal results have always been without.
That brings us back to the crux of the headphones - you change one little thing that has a big impact or none at all.
Even a simple pad change changes everything again.
If you have a dac with filter settings, try it first with slow roll off may help.
I have insanely large ears, stock pads have fitting problems, yaxis with attenuator rings were a no, im very happy with ZMF ori suede, just need to test with Universe perf hybrid before settling.
Im very sensitive to small treble differences and I like very bright trebles (beyer, grado), as you say I dont think asking mark will help in this case I dont want the full lawton treatment for this pair. I dont think Ill try it on the teaks, they just work and even compete with my T1 and clears (except on the treble department) which is insane at this price point.
Purpleheart cups finally came in! Did the MON edition (Level 1 excl. cup dampening, X00 pads) for maximum bass and I gotta say they definitely live up to the hype.
Yeah level 1 driver dampening, no cup dampening with X00 pads. Also 20db bass shelf if youâre absolutely nuts. Without the last part these are still Beats for Audiophiles.
If you want bass focus over everything else that will do it, although the eq is just for fun lol (but despite the worse comfort the x00 pads do really make it a true basshead can, and leaving cup dampening out further increases prominence at the cost of some control/tightness)
Iâve been wearing them for about an hour and the pads are definitely putting more pressure with the added cup weight but still pretty comfy. I guess it really comes down to ear size on whether or not theyâll work for you comfort wise.
