Lawton modded headphones

Nice cups,:+1::v::+1::v:
I have one question for you.
Generally, the treble tends to drown out a bit with the original cups.

Is it gone with the Lawton cups?

It’s noticeable, not too annoying, but it’s still a little distracting.
So I wonder if it is gone with the Lawton cup mod or still present.

idk I felt like the treble was too sharp stock cups with stock pads.

That is some gorgeous purple heart. It’s such a deep red wine color and I am very jealous.

I use ZMF Ori cowhide pads with attenuation rings on my X00s with bubinga chambers and I feel like this give more bass than the stock X00 pads while also having a more open stage. I don’t know if they’ll act the same on a TH900 but I think the better comfort and potential sound upgrade are worth a shot.

What about the heights with the Bobinga cups and Zmf pads?
Everything good?

I currently have the Ebony cups from Emu on it and the Lawtons pads on it that I bought with the Mod 1 stage.

I am still thinking about giving the Zmf pads a try, but they are quite expensive for the European side.
I was close to buying them.

ZMF pads are totally worth it the problem (big ass problem btw) is knowing which one you want because there are so many and the small changes in comfort and sound between them make a huge difference

The pads quality is kilometers ahead dekoni, and every other aftermarket pad brand I have tried, except yaxi which also get a pass.

Ori pads which are the smallest end up fitting most headphones, the backside is quite elastic and doesnt feel like it will break or damage by being tight, mine hasnt.

The Lawton pads are probably the brightest pads I still like. They have a more “neutral” sound compared to most of the other pads I’ve liked.

Having gone from the stock X00 purple heart cups to Lawton’s bubinga chambers (type 4 wood) I feel makes the highs a non-issue unless you are actually sensitive to highs. Nothing feels harsh or too sharp. The cowhide pads also help a bit but the main improvement is the Lawton chambers.

It’s also worth pointing out that the Ori cowhide pads are also great even without attenuation rings if you don’t want that B A S S

Can you specify? Im under the impressions those pads are ZMF darkests

Cowhide tends to be the darkest sounding material, but that is only in regards to ZMF’s own headphones as not every headphone will react the same way to pad changes.

On my Lawton modded X00s the Ori cowhide pads are warm and bassy, but the highs are not significantly reduced compared to the lambskin or suede/lambskin hybrid ori pads I have.

Also I use the cowhide pads with attenuation rings that result in some rather stupendous B A S S, but without these attenuation rings the bass is much more reasonable for most people’s tastes. Usually with the X00s many pads sound a bit thin without attenuation rings but the cowhide Ori pads still sound great imo (as do the other two Ori pads I’ve tried, but the cowhide pads are the best of the three w/o attenuation rings).

Whats the main difference between doing the mod either going Tesla 1 drivers vs Tesla 1.5?

I know it probably depends on a ton of factors but why would you guys pick one or the other if you were to start a custom can.

Is it like comparing a th610 vs a th900 plus the mods? What improvements can be expected of using a 1.5T over a 1T

ZMF Pilot Pad adds a good deal of comfort if the added weight bothers you.

Can confirm, it has a tight enough fit on the Fostex headband with adequate padding

I have the suede one in a drawer somewhere but comfort isn’t really an issue here. I was just comparing it to stock.

Does the pilot pad also work with grado headphones? I bought an aliexpress headband cover for denon/fostex and it doesnt fit in any headphone lol

It probably will but might look a bit silly lol

@Hazi59 has a lot of experience modding Grado. I’d ask him for some suggestions. :+1:t4:

After spending some time swapping between X00, stock (TH900) and Lawton angle pads, I think the stock pads are a good middle ground. Will be leaving the cup dampening out still.

Beautiful Audio also do some good Grado headband covers that fit perfectly.

Ty, im gonna consider this one over the ZMF one it looks very nice, I was probably going to get some pads from ZMF anyway to combine shpping, but I’ll consider both options.

Also If anyone thinks the copilot is better for a denon/grado headband than the regular pilot pls let me know.

Are you in Europe? If so, also look at Shipibo audio. They make great headbands (as well as metal gimbals and rod blocks) and are based in Poland so shipping shouldn’t be bad. This is also a good option if you want the nicest cheep option.

As for fostex headbands, I like this one since it’s still looks nice, fits snuggly, and adds a bit extra padding.
