Because sometimes I can’t help but sate my curiosity.
The name Nixie was derived by Burroughs from “NIX I”, an abbreviation of "Numeric Indicator eXperimental No.1" , although this may have been a backronym designed to justify the evocation of the mythical creature with this name.
During this hunt I reached out to the seller that had the balanced GA that @dB_Cooper posted in the used thread asking if he would be able to do X price. I never heard back, and i figured maybe he was insulted (so many people get POed when you shoot them an offer) so I went after another unit. Only for that seller to lower his price to what I offered the day I got my unit. That is the way she goes I suppose…
I will probably have questions but ill start here:
Do Lampizators come with a power cable? The ad doesnt mention it either way. I am assuming i stepped into the “supply your own” tier but I want to confirm.
Looks like to test it ill just grab a power chord that came with one of my good PC psus
It will be a while most likely. It was really bought as the cornerstone of my 2ch setup for use with the hegel. The hegel I bought the day I was told we had an offer accepted on a house that had a huge backroom that over looked a forested preserve. A rarity here to have a gorgeous wooded area instead of way too close neighbors. Unfortunately, that deal got booted and I just decided to grab things when I can.
I will need to plug it in and make sure it all works but I really do not have any high end headphone amps currently and I dont plan to purchase anything too high end any time soon. So any impressions will most likely be, comically, off the BHC as it will be easiest to hook up.
Maybe I will decide to toss the weight and try the headphone out of the hegel but my current desk may snap in half with the lampi and hegel on it.
I do want to roll some of my all time favorite tubes (KT77s!) and do a general write up on some EL34 tube types here, especially as lampi is using those in The Horizon, but they all will be from past experiences in amps so im not sure how helpful it will be currently.
That’s actually a good questions does a tube’s sound carry through whether it’s in a pre-amp, an amp, a DAC? I would think there are so many variables that there’s bound to be more differences than similarities, but just figured I’d ask.
Mine shipped with one, a really nice Lampizator branded cable hand singed by Lukasz himself. You must have gotten the budget version.
BTW, your black face makes the gold really stand out, I like it much more than the balanced one you missed out on If it’s any consolation. It really is striking.
I cant tell if youre goofing on me regarding the power chord.
Yes the black and copper looks better to me than the silver. The previous owner got swirls on the top but ill just not look there, and something bunked into and got through the black anodizing but a black pen should make short work of it.
The O light is blue and i just feel that is off. I dont know how easy that is to change but a white or amber would be much nicer.
The O light is not difficult to switch but it’s involved. I’m not sure which type of LED switch Lampi uses. If it’s one where you can change the color of the light based on the combination of pins you power up or if they’re all different (one color per switch). In any case the wires have to be soldered off whether to take the switch off or to reconfigure the led power wires. The wires are also very thin and are probably silver or silver plated. The funky thing with the switch is, it’s not just for the color, the switch does a function, like switch between USB and SPDIF and so would require a lot of care.
There’s a US based Lampizator authorized service guy in eastern PA, that would be my recommendation if you really wanted to switch it.
Price announced at…
Well, 50k US, not all that surprising. No options, all dacs configured as max spec
Tube rolling notes from Lukasz
The Horizon tube rolling: this is going to be exciting. The 7 tubes work in a new way, never seen before in any DAC. The pentodes provide power supply regulation, active anode loading and cathode buffering - all at the same time - thanks to their 3 grids. The dual triodes provide voltage amplification and current conversion in the DAC process - so their influence is huge. We offer the circuitry for octal base and 6SN7 tube type, but we also recommend:
6sn7GT, CV181, 6H8C, 6N8S, MELZ Metalbase,
With octal adaptors: VT99, 6F8G
With noval adapters: 6N1P, 6N6P, 6H30P, 6922, 6DJ8, ECC88, E88CC, ECC182, 7119, Ecc82, ECC81, ECC99, 6900, 12BH7,
and for the power tubes: EL34, 6V6, 6L6, KT66, KT88, KT90, KT120, KT150, KT170, 5881, 6550C,
For the rectifier: 274B, 5U4G, GZ34, GZ37, 5R4WGT, Potato Mashers, U52, 5C3S, 5C4S, 5Y3, 5u4C, GZ480
We will be prepared to add desired adapters to the package.
My personal favorite is: input 6900 with adapter, Power KR-KT88, Rectifier Riccardo Kron 5U4G followed by the more accessible 6N1P-EB as input.
Damn it stop making things that work with so many tubes, pick one and done for once lol
Ngl, I hope they update the rest of their line to this aesthetic. I’m not a big fan of current lampu aesthetic and this just looks a bit more premium (from brief pics at least) imo
