Lampizator dac thread, Amber / Baltic / Atlantic / Golden / Pacific / Horizon

12 is what I want it to get to

If I were to decide their lineup considering both cost and how they perform, I’d probably say their lineup would be best if it was this

  • Horizon
  • Golden Gate 3
  • Baltic 4
  • Amber 4

Reason being is that I think the atlantic and baltic are too close to each other in sound, the pacific new fully loaded doesn’t make sense if you can get a horizon, and the gg3 bridges the gap and keeps an older lampi classic sound in the lineup which would otherwise be missing (although only heard a gg2 not gg3 but I assume it’s not radically different in signature)

That seems like a more balanced list tbh. I mostly find the massive gulf between the atlantic and the horizon wierd when they just came out with the GG3 and big 7 mk3. Just kind of based on pricing, I feel like amber → atlantic → gg → horizon kinda makes more sense in terms of evening out the stack.

Ultimatey though, I just find it kinda wierd that they would retire 2 dacs that are less then 6 months old.

From Lampizator about the Pacific:

Not discontinued, just not being further developed.

Soooooo still sold, but just no planned upgrades for it? Wonder why they called it legacy then since that basically typically means oop for most mfg imo

They basically took all their DHT dacs and relegated them to legacy lol, could have just separated it into “Main line” and “Custom DHT line” or something like that to make it more clear

Edit: not sure how I missed this page on their site

"Legacy products are our classic line DACs that are not discontinued, but they are made strictly to a custom order. They will not be - from 2023 onwards - developed further and in the main lineup of Lampizator portfolio.

Legacy products are our great pride, they put us on the map of high-end world and we decided to keep them for as long as the parts and components allow us to do so.

Legacy products will have custom order details, parameters and specs and customized look, but longer waiting time (usually up to 2 months). By doing so, we want to streamline the current portfolio to be available in few days only. "

Makes me like the legacy line more lol

Honestly, I don’t really miss it tbh lol, the horizon is just a direct step over the pacific in all aspects with a similar signature, although I do have a soft spot for the golden gate as it’s a really nice balance if you’re looking for something on the sweeter and warmer richer side of things. The big 7 is just something I’d likely skip and save up for a gg imo since it’s a nice technical step forward

That being said, the fact that they’ll still make pacifics might be helpful for keeping used prices as good as they are instead of potentially rising due to being out of production, so perhaps they should keep doing that lol

I can maybe afford the Pacific for its used pricing. I’m no where close to or will consider buying the Horizon even for half off MSRP :man_shrugging:t2:

GG also sounds interesting to balance things out with cleaner amps like HM1 and LTA maybe.

Oh for sure, my guess is that since horizons are limited, those aren’t going to drop much on the used market from what they are (especially with the delays they’ve had), but pacifics are a crazy value these days (although if you get tube crazy that might offset the value lol), would prefer if they kept at such a good value used for the sake of the community. I will say though, I think the existence of the horizon is really what caused them to drop from people either selling once it was announced, or selling when they weren’t able to trade in either because trade ups have closed or because it didn’t make sense. Because really everyone that’s heard the two (myself included) found it to be a drastic upgrade over the pac, and if you had a fully loaded pacific vs a horizon the retail cost really wasn’t far off, also much cheaper to tube swap, so from new perspective the pacific doesn’t really make sense anymore imo, but used absolutely with the prices they’re at

What would you take over the $15K balanced Pacific (no volume control afaik)?

Hm. Really, I don’t know, I really like that dac, and at that price point it would entirely come down to what’s out there used, but can’t think of anything new price I’d have over a pacific in the same ~15k price range lol. My answer would entirely depend on what would be out there on the used market and what setup I would pair with, so donno (but I do think it would be hard to beat at that price, you’d really have to come across a killer deal on a similarly higher end dac)

Pacific on it’s way back to Poland for the Pac2 upgrade.

Pacific is back, reconnected and producing music.

It’s been powered on for less than 10 minutes, and I rarely listen within an hour of powering it on, plus it will have to burn in again so I’ll wait to give impressions other than if the overall presentation holds, it’s a significant change.

I was concerned about shipping it, but the overall process was painless.

Email Lampizator NA, wire them some money.
Put pacific in case, affix shipping label to case.
DHL man picks it up.
Arrives at Lampizator Poland 2 days later.
They had mine for maybe 10 days
Get a shipping notification
Get a bill from DHL for $44 for customs handling
DHL delivers it inside 3 days.

You get another test report from lampizator similar to the one when it’s produced.
And I believe it adds 3 years to the warranty, so that’s nice.
Mine had the older USB module and the Rendu reports the USB change

Only exterior differences highligthed below, network adapter deleted and nifty Eleven sticker added

I’m not sure if I prefer to hear there’s not much change or if there’s a huge improvement. In any case I impatiently look forward to your thoughts!

Nice. Very interested.

I’m strongly considering upgrading from my TRP 3 but don’t want to commit to the cost of a Horizon. I heard Lampi is releasing something this Fall between the Horizon and TRP level but that’s just rumors. Or maybe go for a Pacific 2, but some folks told me between the TRP 3 and Pac 1 there are trade-offs and it’s not a straight upwards move, but I haven’t heard the two in person to compare.

Very nice! Stupidly enough what impressed me most was that DHL picked up at your home! I had to drive over 50 miles to their nearest location :face_with_raised_eyebrow: I’m jealous…lol congratulations on a rejuvenated piece of top notch magic fun stuff!

OK from a couple of hours of listening (initial impressions).
And of course there is no way to do a direct comparison, so we have to rely on my memory.

I am very surprised just how much difference “just” swapping the digital section makes.

It’s a step up certainly.

It’s overall more ethereal sounding, more resolving, the background is blacker (not that I could hear the noise floor previously), treble comes across a touch less forced (again not that I thought it was forced previously), might be a hair more relaxed.
Staging is wider, and instruments tend to “fill” it better but without smearing, which leads to a overall more natural presentation (again I’d have considered this a strength of the pacific to start with).
The two big standouts listening were noticing the subtle variation in drum strikes that I previously hadn’t in recordings I was very familiar with, and the way Bass guitars were presented, which felt more natural with the leading edge of the note being textured, but resonances filling the space better.
You can hear more of the characteristics I associate with DHT’s.
On the classical side (and I haven’t listened extensively hear yet) strings were amazing, and there just seems to be an overall better presentation of the Bass.

It’ll be interesting to see how break in effects it.
Makes me want to hear a Horizon

Short version loses nothing from the original, sounds “better”, lower noise floor, better Bass control, improved stage, which is pretty much what I’d write for any significant step up between DAC’s.

Did you ever get ears on the TRP 2 or were you straight to 3?

@Polygonhell is shipping covered in the upgrade cost?

Cost is basically $4K Euros, roughly $4200, shipping was $800, so a total of $5K.
