My 1975 Klipsch K-horns are up and running again. I sent the AA crossovers out to a fellow by the name of Dean Wescott, aka Crankysoldermiester on Facebook. He swapped out some components as officially approved, authorized and specified by Klipschs’ own Roy Delgado.
Turn around was fairly quick and painless and cost was less than anyone else I know of charges for X-over refresh or mods.
To add to my joy, after almost a year waiting, my local electronics tech was able to fully re-build and repair my Epik Empire dual sealed 15” isobaric subwoofer plate amplifier. Top notch parts were used throughout the re-build and repair and I hope to get another 10 years out of it.
I’ve been up since way early this AM tuning and blending the subs with the speakers and I’m feeling really great about the synergy and sound.
To top things off I finally got a great tube combo installed and operational in my DAC and I have been playing with my big amplifier in full solid state mode for now, pushing 150wpc into 8ohms.
I am not sure if the x-over refresh did anything much for the SQ BUT the tiny bit of hiss my speakers had w/ my Vinnie Rossi amplifier is now gone and they are 100% noise/hiss free. That alone was worth the cost and minor effort!!!
Stupidly well pleased and satiated for a while w/ this particular combination. It may not be as fancy as the big boys but it’s all mine and w/ time, patience and attention to detail I am very proud of the quality of sound I’m able to get out these old workhorse’s
I’m sure I’ve asked before so this will be more of a comment - I like the component rack you’re using. It’s a tasteful center of attention fitting the room nicely.
Thank you very much, I believe it is a company called VPI. It was an opportune purchase at a discount off Amazon one day. Completely unplanned, I stumbled across it when they were offering a discount and snatched it up. I don’t know if those devilishly sharp and pointy feet make an actual difference in helping the components maximize vibration dissipation but it has worked out well for me. No complaints even though it came in slightly banged up
My first set of “big boy” speakers were the pair of Cornwall IV purchased last year after we sold our house for an absolute killing and moved into a new house. My wife gave me a budget of $25k and I started with that. I’ve made so many changes and have bought/tried/sold so many pieces of gear that the original setup is long gone, but the speakers remain and they are, quite simply, breathtaking. I have had so many people come over and every single one of them is absolutely blown away by my system. I’m continually shocked at how fantastic it sounds and, not to toot my own horn, but I’ve got to say: it sounds the most realistic and lifelike of any system I’ve heard, be it friends’ systems or demo systems in hi-fi stores. There’s always something off with the other systems I’ve heard and it’s not just a preference thing or arrogance about my system, because I am ALWAYS listening critically and trying to figure out how to improve it.
Anyway, I absolutely love the Klipsch Heritage sound and have no desire to ever try other speakers. I listen primary to Nine Inch Nails and metal/hardcore and I could not be happier with how everything I throw at these speakers sounds. I’ve also noticed as I’ve continued to upgrade my DAC and change my preamps that there is seemingly nothing the Cornwall’s can’t handle. The scale endlessly.
Here’s the front view of my listening room, from the sweet spot on the couch taken in June of this year:
It’s a weird, stupid 12.5’ x 12.5’ room with a bay window and basically no wall to the left (goes to the foyer) or behind (goes into the dining room). There’s a major channel imbalance with the left being about 2dB louder than the right and all kinds of other stupid things I’ve had to compensate for, but I absolutely love it. I put so much sweat and time into treating this room and endlessly fiddling with speaker placement. It’s been a labor of love and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
EDIT: the “figs” are fake. There’s no way I’d have plants that close to $10k amp with $3500 of tubes in it, especially not with my German Shepherd who loves to look out the left window and gets excited when he sees things.
You better be so thankful she keeps you on a tight leash. I spend money like a drunken sailor, and it’s only out of fear of my wife that I keep things under control.
Bah I messed up and did something stupid today and it cost me a damned tweeter diaphragm on one of my Heresy speakers. Don’t be stupid ladies and gentlemen… stupid will cost you money… Anyway, this is the excuse i needed to open up the speakers, swap out the old caps in the x-overs, freshen up the binding posts, maybe add a few sheets of no-res, change out the diaphragms in the tweeters w/ some fresh ones and lastly get some fresh velcro on the grilles That is all, I’m annoyed but not too much, these speakers are well worth the effort and money to re-fresh.
Im going to ask the question that has put many in the point of no return
What comes next after the klipsch rp600m…
I have a double subwoofer configuration, they are budget and the high pass filter is almost maxed out, gain almost to the minimun, so they give just enough thump for the bass to be the way I like it.
I havent really entered the two channel game yet, as I consider the rp600m only the starting point. But I love them, they bring me enough joy to not feel the need to upgrade.
But really, what comes after rp600m?
I have an exogal powerdac with upgraded cables and OFC wires connected to the 4 inputs of each speaker (100-125watts @8 ohm)
This is the sound I like, but I cant avoid but like my friends focal chora 826 more, they are kinda similar but a lot more technical and dynamic. But I also think they are a bit overpriced or just not optimally setup in his livingroom.
With that amplifier and DAC combination the Philharmonic BMR stand mount speakers worked exceptionally well and just really sounded beautiful.
If you want to stay with Klipsch the Forte 2,3 or 4.
Lastly if you want to keep the speakers smaller the Fritz speaker line has some really nice pieces that should give you lots of quality for your dollar.
Of course many used and new speakers will play well. The DAC amp combo has power enough for most, and great ability.
Happy listening whichever direction you decide to go.
Im certain any of those speakers will end up in my bookshelve stands. Im sure they all sound fantastic.
Ill have to buy new because importing speakers is not fun. Ill probably end up with the klipsch forte # as im more likely to find a klipsch distributor here than the other brands.
The Klipsch has a grand party sound. I have a preference for them, I own several pair. They are relatively inexpensive and might be found used down your way.
If you want more “audiophile” sound be open minded to brands local to you.
I absolutely love using my 600’s as tv speakers, they perform admirably in my bedroom.
See if Dennis can have his BMR philharmonic stand-mounts shipped directly to you, email him and ask you have nothing to lose by at least checking on the possibility and cost. They really did perform well with the Exogal stack BUT you will need to find or have proper height stands made. (BTW, cinder blocks work well. They look horrible but work well as stands, I have seen many a frugal DIY guy use them)
Klipsch party sound with subwoofers yay, most sellers here are like used car salesman, they care more about the sell than the client, and Ive only ever seen yamaha, focal, sonus, margules, monitor audio; none of which have a product I want or can pay. But ill be on the lookout
Of course you do
And your K BASS
I have adjustable height stands, im not gonna purchase just yet I just wanted to inquiry what were my options, and klipsch rocks
Bmr and fritz, could be difficult.
Also I remember, there are a lot of people that look for what I believe are older models of JBL, those also seem like they would have a “klipschy” sound
KBass have permanent set up on my desktop. They are perfect there and I’m completely satisfied.
Yes, there are many great models of JBL speakers. The higher end ones still keep a relative pricey used cost but if available local would be a great option for you if something were to pop up in your price range.
Avoid the Heresy, that’s not for you. The Forte should fit in your room and be satisfying . The rest of the Heritage line are probably simply too big for your space.
Keep an eye out for used bookshelves, they are a great value and many a high end model can be shipped and despite the cost still be worthwhile
