Oh hey, according the FAQ, the new version has a NOS mode, that’s fun. Not sure about going true balanced though, I hope the single-ended performance doesn’t suffer as a result:

So Bifrost 2/64 is different than the original Bifrost 2?

Yes. Let’s break it down:

  • D/A converters. The original Bifrost 2 used two Analog Devices AD5781 18-bit D/A converters, and the current Bifrost 2/64 uses four Texas Instruments DAC8812 16-bit D/A converters.
  • Hardware balanced. The original Bifrost 2 was internally single-ended, and created its balanced outputs with differential amplifiers. Bifrost 2/64 is internally hardware balanced, and has inherent balanced outputs.
  • NOS mode. Bifrost 2/64 gives you the option to turn off our digital filter and run everything straight thru in non-oversampled (NOS) mode.

Im reading this fast and scratching my head. Do they keep using the bf1 part of the site for bf revisions?

My dac will obviously be way better BUT I lowkey wished they would have released this earlier and I probably would have bought the shit out of it. Lol

You bought the upgrade board, right?

Correct

At first glance it looks like the Audio Note 2.1 Dac with the Adxxxx chip and 18 bit.
The whole thing times 4 and without tube amplification.

The new Bitfrost could possibly be interesting.
It’s unfortunate that they didn’t include an I2S.

I am curious about your impressions and wish you a lot of fun and joy who bought or upgraded it.

Probably a response to the difficulty they’ve had sourcing the AD parts.
Basically a mini Yggdrasil LIM, since that uses the same chips

I think it’s perfectly legitimate.
The industry has put out a lot in the last few years that wasn’t even bad, it just lacked fine-tuning or was simply outdone by new chips.
That’s why it’s okay to go 1-2 steps back.it’s also wise to try, apart from the costs and material procurement.

Is it now actually a Delta Sigma or mini R2R that might pass for a better Area 2?

It’s still what Schiit describes as True Multibit, i.e. R2R on a chip with some dithering to resolve the bits beyond what they can get directly. Interestingly I think it technically decodes less bits directly with the new chips that with less of the old ones, not that it really matters.

Jason at Schiit mentioned the single-ended output would benefit from the upgrade. He said will be personally using his single-ended with the new Lyr+ on for his desktop setup. So no fear of a gimped SE output.

Just got the “old” one about a month ago… :face_with_diagonal_mouth:
Will be watching for the comparisons!

Also pretty cool that I just saw someone post somewhere else

New DSHA 3? And magni? What? Seems like a diy builder almost

Bizarre, has to be somebodies hobby, they can’t be making money on just those.
I mean I think the DSHA-3 was open source, the ones sold by ECP were all made by a guy for them, so I guess someone could negotiate the rights to make them.
But that’s a pretty small niche if your going to run a company.

Apparently started by CEE TEE, so yeah basically like a side project

Huh, that’s a fun find! Assuming they don’t sell out in two seconds, I’ll probably pick up one of those Magnis to try.
