How do you store your headphones when not in use?

This has been something that has been on my mind for a while now. My main three headphones are the hd800s, th900mk2 PW, and hd6xx. Of course none of these have suspension straps. I feel like this is less of an issue with headphones that have suspension straps because you can hang it from the steel part of the headpband fairly easily most of the time.

With headphones without suspension straps, I’ve always left them laying on my desk because I know that the padding on the headband will eventually be permanently indented from hanging. This has been in the back of my mind for a while, but I’m finally deciding to act on this. I have a few ideas for making a nice headphone hanger, mostly for these headphones without suspension straps, but the concept will be able to work with anything.

Once I have a design, I will start with 3D printing for proof of concept, but after I feel it’s good enough, I plan to make it out of aluminum after hours at work. I could make it out of any metal I want, but aluminum seems like the best candidate to start.

Posting this here because I’m curious what you all do. Do you hang your headphones, do you lay them on your desk, keep them in a case, etc.? And are they headphones with suspension straps or not? I also plan on taking it a step further and figuring out a good solution for cable management while on the hanger. This part I don’t have a plan for yet, but once I get in the design zone, I’m sure I’ll come up with something.

Thanks for any input you may have.

I hang mine, but I swap headphones every couple of weeks, and the ones I’m not using are in cases of various descriptions.

I have two sets of cans. One sets on a stand, the other goes in this water and nuke-u-ler bomb proof case.

Funny…I live alone so my “not using right now but at the ready” ones are just on an old
recliner near me. Soft cushion so pads don’t get squished over time, and covered with a large bandana for a dust cover. Several others in the original box in a closet. Those get used occasionally to refresh my tonal memory.
Helps me appreciate my modest upgrades, lol.

All on these “shoehorn”-style stands: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ZYTS86X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The “shoehorn” section is wide enough to spread the weight across nearly all headbands without indentation. These stands never have left a dent in any of my headphones without suspension headbands.

I own one pair of cans with a suspension band – Audeze LCD-2C open-back. They are heavy, so hanging by the leather strap will stretch it over time. So, I just hang them by the steel headband to avoid headband stretch.

Some people like the “omega” style wooden holders or placing their cans over a foam block. I don’t like that system at all, as it will compress the pads over time and change the sound of the cans.

I’d rather have a dent in my headband – which never has happened to me and doesn’t affect the sound – than premature compression of my pads, which will change the sound and require a usually costly replacement.

For the hd800 and 600 series i think the indents in the top crown padding would be perfect for a thin hanger wire type hook. If it indents it will be in that spot where it is not touching.

Otherwise i really dont know, i just lay them down or if they have an easy to use case i put it in there.

I would like a better solution to things like my hd600 that are just sitting on my desk, waiting long periods between uses. Those pads collect dust too and are not easy to clean. I guess a draw would be ok but not ideal.

This is my current situation but a lot of times I will hang the Susvara from the suspension strap since the shape it creates seems perfect to me and it does not affect how it stays on my head…

Haha I just moved it before the photo was taken to sort the cable. It’s not usually like that

I only have three headphones so they’re generally always out, always in use.
