Yeah I usually will just set it to play with nothing plugged in at least a half hour before I’m gonna listen. With nothing plugged in it still seems to warm up like normal, and the battery barely drains at all.
I share the exact same sentiments, i’ve had experiences where I blamed my gear for not sounding magical only to remember that I didn’t warm up the Hiby. After warming it up it gained all the magic back. It’s the only draw back for me with the Hiby, that it has a warmup time. Just like fopps I leave it playing music with nothing plugged for at least 20 minutes but usually 40+ is perfect. it’s got to be the R2R structure in it, really requires it to be a little warmed up to sound best.
It’s like planning for tube warmup before listening. Can’t be impulsive
100% it can be annoying sometimes lol. I think you and @j.fopps have desktop Dacs that are always on so you won’t mind as much. For me it’s a bit unfortunate tho lol.
@Littledrummerboy do you use a 4.4mm to XLR cable from the LO port to connect the HiBy to you main system? Any “quirks” with this setup? Or is it pretty easy to use this way?
I just use the 3.5 line out and connect that to my amplifier, zero quirks and nothing messy. Only “quirk” I’ve ever found was using a tablet as a source, connecting the hiby as the dac for the tablet as it would have some weird audio delays. But besides that nothing to note. Super easy to use
Sweet. I’ll have to do a little experimenting.
I’ve used both a 4.4mm to XLR, and a 3.5mm to rca to my desktop amp, no issues either way
Also no issues using it as a transport only, using the supplied usbc to coaxial cable to the BF2. It’s a much cleaner digital source than my PC I’ve just recently discovered with m0ns help
Good idea. I think my transport is clean, but this is a good way to benchmark it.
Forgot to say, thank you very much for these pictures, I totally wanted to see the insides of the RS6 since forever!
okay - this is awesome. Thanks for the excellent tip!
I’ve played around with a lot of different transport arrangements to my DACs, and it’s tough because there wasn’t a reference for “this is right”. It’s just A/B which sounds better. Using the HiBy as a reference for “this is right”, I was able to move things around and get pretty close. I think the HiBy is still the best transport in my house, but I’ve got to listen pretty close to tell the difference. But still, this was VERY helpful.
This may be the most effective way to prove to someone that transport is more than just bits. Noise matters.
Yeah so for me, my chin was: Desktop PC >> BF2 >> Questyle CMA800R >> TH900PW. I was experiencing some sibilance rnge harshness that was getting to me somewhat often. I switched to the: Desktop PC >> RS6 >> Questyle CMA800R >> TH900PW and that same harshness was present. Then I switched to: RS6 >> Questyle CMA800R >> TH900PW and the harshness was gone, only difference was the elimination of the PC. Talked to m0n and he made me realize that it seems like my PC has a bad USB implementation. I then tried: RS6 >> BF2 (via usbc to coaxial cable) >> Questyle CMA800R >> TH900PW and the harshness was still gone here which then confirmed that my PC was the issue. I cant believe it took this long to notice this.
Last thing I want to try is just usbc out to the BF2 usb, see what that, does and if the trend continues. After that, I also want to try out my Samsung tablet to the BF2. So far though, this entire thing has not been subtle, it’s been a very apparent difference in the level of harshness in that region, probably because that is a sensitive region for me.
I completely agree with the obviousness of it. And I hear it in the same region you mentioned - sibilance / harshness comes right out. I also noticed a lot of small details come out very clearly.
The setup I used is the following:
RS6 → BF2 (via usb-coax cable) → GS-X Mini → TH900 PW
This chain is easily the best I’ve heard from my system.
I can get close to it with the following (so close that what I might be hearing is just differences in how the BF2 handles USB vs Coax inputs):
RPi4 (on LPS) → Singxer UIP1 (on LPS) → BF2 (via USB) → GS-X Mini → TH900 PW
RPi4 is running Ropiee as a network streamer via WiFi. Both the RPi4 and Singxer UIP1 are powered from Small Green Computer Linear Power Supplies. That’s a lot of gear / effort to match what a simple DAP can do as a transport.
The HiBy RS6 is really a capable device that can cover a lot of ground in a system.
It’s so nice finally seeing more activity in this hiby thread
Hahaha, I felt so lonely for the longest time. Specially since @j.fopps usually would just pm me his opinions lolz. And @M0N got in and essentially left once he gave it to his SO  also had a small falling out with the RS6
I still like it, yes just turned it into a gift. Didn’t really compete with my main daps at all from a sound perspective (although insanely faster and more feature rich than both lol) so I just gave it to someone else. Still think it’s one of the better daps out there for the money and there’s not really much competition for it at it’s price point. I just think it encompasses some of the characteristics that bother me about other dacs that make me like it less than I normally would, but ignoring preference and focusing on performance I can’t really fault it for the money as an all around package. I also think that for the iems I run, it didn’t have the best synergy, but it had great synergy with the iems for the person I gave it too
Some how my purchases and preferences have zeroed in on items given as “gifts for girlfriends”
I still love the FiR VxV - and that seems to be a common IEM to gift to a SO.
I now I’m big into the RS6 - and again it’s the DAP to give the SO.
So I guess this means I have good taste?
I mean if you are giving someone a gift, you typically aren’t giving them bad or mediocre stuff lol, I’d say if you give something as a gift it’s probably something you’d stand behind yourself (in most cases at least, at least for me lol)
LOL
Let’s hold off on calling the RS6 the SO DAP yet tho lol. For god sake’s it’s my only DAP/DAC, if it becomes the SO DAP/DAC i don’t know what I may do. Plus to be fair at least this time only mon has given it to his SO lol, Fopps and I still holding our ground with our RS6.
I can’t defend the VxV tho, I think like 3 people in this forum gave it to their SO. LOL
