Help with small powered speakers for a desk

I was planning on getting my dad some speakers for Christmas. He listens to music on the built in speakers on his laptop. The sound quality hurts my soul. Does anyone know of some affordable smaller powered speakers that are good for a desk. He has a smaller desk that he uses and can’t really put huge speakers on them.

I was thinking of going with the Edifier R1280DB Powered Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers. They are not too expensive and appear to not take up much space. However, I have not heard them before but Edifier seems to make decent speakers for the price.

Any other alternatives would be appreciated. Looking to spend around $200.

Thanks

If you can find them on sale, personally I think a really interesting pick is the iloud micro monitor, it’s not going to have that much low end (really not all that lacking though), but they are very impressive for their price and size, and somewhat hard to not suggest imo. You would have to plug it into a mobo with line in and control volume that way since there is no volume control, but I think it’s usable like that if you are careful. They are slightly unforgiving though

If you need a 2.1 setup, I’ve always liked the klipsch promedia 2.1 thx, overall pretty great for the money and not much to complain about.

If you could spend a bit more, vanatoo t0 are really nice and a plug and play solution with great flexibility, more fun signature that’s still reasonably technical and slightly forgiving

The edifier are ok, nothing really remarkable there and will do the job from my experience

Absolutely this. Bought them twice, never at MSRP. Won’t sell them a second time.

Vanatoo t0 cost around $1200 on Canadian Amazon. ilouds don’t appear to be carried by amazon either. I guess I could look at other site. Sometimes living in Canada is a wasteland when it comes to audio. :frowning:

??? What. They are 350 in the us, welp that’s out then lol

Dang

Not exactly, there are actually a lot of speaker companies but mainly they are high end is the problem. Although if you wanted something from a canadian company, these are a good pick and would likely fit what you might be after (although the yu4 are worthwhile if you can get those)

I had considered these. However, read a number of reviews where they quit working after a few months and apparently sound quality was not worth the price tag. However, that could be incorrect if you have had a more positive experience.

I found the ilouds. Looks like they are being sold for around $470. Might need to check some other sites. Speakers on Amazon can be unreasonable at times.

might be worth looking to see what you can find locally on canuck audio mart

The Yu4 are around $470 and the TUK are $1100. A little more than I want to pay but something to consider.

Hadn’t heard about the failure aspect, I do agree they are a bit high price for what they are, but I’d assume they are cheaper in canada than in the us which could make them worthwhile, but if they aren’t than that’s likely not worthwhile

Cad or usd?

Gotcha gotcha, well hmmm.

What about a passive speaker setup for a somewhat close enough price range? ~400 ish cad but you get a dac, amp, and speakers, with flexibility in the future

https://www.amazon.ca/S-M-S-L-Infineons-Technology-Amplifier-chip,Bluetooth/dp/B081DJD1G4/ref=sr_1_35

You could get cost down with cheaper speakers or a cheaper amp if needed, although I don’t know if I’d suggest going cheaper on the amp side of things since they can get pretty bad or prone to failure

https://www.amazon.ca/Micca-MB42X-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B00E7H8GG2/ref=sr_1_13

Otherwise I do think that looking used would be the best if you can do that

Are the Sx6-BK large? There is not a lot of room on his desk. This is an interesting option.

According to fluance it’s 13.5 x 8.3 x 9.1 inches / 34.3 x 21.1 x 23.1 cm (HxWxD). If it is too large, those micca are a bit of a step down but is likely small enough and should fit well into budget

As long as they don’t fail I guess

Hmmm, found a used offer of the Yu2 with stands for $190. However, they are coming from Quebec so would be shipping. Thoughts?

Lol nice

I have no experience with powered speakers but CAM can be really great at times

@Logarithan could offer $190 or $200 including shipping. I do that a lot usually the seller goes for it.

Haha, was just looking at that.

Hmmm, interesting. What are your thoughts on the powered version?

Asked him what he wanted for shipping. In my experience the shipping always is the deal breaker in these situations. lol Especially from out east.

Doesn’t @alphamarshan have the YU2’s? Maybe he could chime in on his experience with them.

Go with Kanto in Canada because they tend to not be marked up as much because they’re a canadian company
