Grado headphone thread, SR / RS / GS / PS / Hemp / GH

I know a fair amount of people here have had or have a hemp, just recently got my hands on a pair, and it’s really enjoyable overall. I was surprised at the bass performance both in prominence and quality compared to other non totl grado I’ve heard, it’s a bit rounded but got solid punch, nice warmth, and not much bleed either, pretty enjoyable. Midrange is the spotlight typical of grado imo, but in the case of the hemp it tends to focus more on the lower mids more and is really great there with great timbre, good resolution, and weight. I do think that somewhere in the either lower treble or upper mids there’s some weirdness/unevenness that bothers me, but treble wise it’s actually a bit relaxed and smooth which I also wasn’t expecting, perhaps a slight bit more air would be nice but still good. Overall signature is a warmer slightly forward signature that really focuses on the bass and mid to lower midrange.

From a technical perspective speed and separation are a bit weak and I do find it a bit congested at times and clarity can take a hit, but the denseness can be fun for some tracks, reasonable detail, midrange texture is actually pretty good but not enough to be super stand out, control wise reasonably good, timbre very solid here, same with tonal density/weight. Smoothness very nice overall too. Spatially is somewhat more like other grados where it’s not that wide but it has solid depth and a pretty black background which is enjoyable, but it’s a bit more unique and hard to describe from that. Dynamically is actually pretty alive, more in a macro sense, but microdynamics are still pretty good too.

Regarding amp pairings, I think it tends to pair well with a warmer and more engaging system, found that some of the more neutral precise systems just didn’t seem as fun and lost a bit of what makes me like the grado. I don’t really have many budget pairings that I can talk about left to try out so I’m not sure if mentioning more than that would really be helpful here lol.

For actually appropriate pairings I bet it would be real solid out of amps like an asgard 3, quicksilver, tuba, and g111, but I haven’t been able to test that myself so moreso just guessing based off of pairing with other grado. I only really have 2 midrange amps on me atm one being the little labs monotor and that kinda sapped the fun out of it, but it did give better prominence in the treble and better separation, but also made midrange too aggressive and it needed more width, lost some of it’s body to where it sounded leaner. The rnhp I found to also push a bit too forward and want more width, but did offer great technical control and ability, still maintained it’s fun nature well, overall solid pairing with a bit more micro focus in comparison

Anyways though, this is likely the least grado headphone I’ve heard from grado, and it’s a good thing in this case imo, really different but really enjoyable where if I had to pick a sub 1k grado it would honestly be this, or if I wanted something more neutral and clean a ps500e, but this would really likely be the pick most of the time. It has a lot of the traits I like about grado’s in the past (unique spatial recreation, macro focus, real nice midrange, forward and fun), without some of the past gripes too (a bit too lean in the low end, peaky or grading treble, too forward, hit or miss signature). Just overall enjoyable with not much to really complain about for the price, hard to not like

Oh and comfort wise I don’t think I’d say they are comfy, but personally I didn’t have that many issues once you get it positioned right, perhaps slightly pushing on my ears too much but it’s not that clampy or heavy so no real qualms imo. Cable is unwieldy though, typical grado there. Build is cheap ish but not that big of a problem, typical grado

I just ran across this post while listening to my Hemps on a G111 with a dac1321. It’s an overall nice pairing, very natural and engaging sound. But I do think a slightly warmer amp/dac setup helps. The G111+dac1321 is coming through a little brighter than I usually care for on some tracks. The A3 or Jot2 are just a little warmer and to me are more enjoyable with the Hemps.

I agree that these are my favorite <$1k Grado (given I’ve never heard any Grado >$500, that’s an easy assessment for me  ) But compared to the OG SR325 I had a while back, these are much easier to enjoy on a wide range of music, which is why I ended up buying them. The SR325 were dedicated acoustic performance specialists for me. The Hemps are great on almost anything, but for blues and any sort of classic rock they really are enjoyable.

I can agree with pretty much everything M0N said and can vouch for the A3 as a good pairing.

These are just great imo, especially for classic rock/metal. Black Sabbath has never sounded so good to me. These just have a quality to the lower mids that makes the bass and guitar growl like nothing else. I also find they perfectly accentuate Ozzy’s voice. RATM is also a particularly good band for these for a lot of the same reasons.

Also, don’t change the pads because every pad I’ve tried loses that special quality in the lower mids.

@M0N dope to see you got to try out the hemps. I think you described a part of their sound as dense and I would really agree with that.

Hemps were an awesome headphone, one that I want to re buy in the future mostly because it’s fairly unique in terms of not just build but sound. Felt like the first warm headphone that I had tried that even though had an awesome midrange it felt like vocals weren’t the main show. There was alot going on with other instrument in the midrange, treble and the bass. Absolutely loved the more intimate sound while also being fairly wide sounding. And the bass and warmth in them was sick even when I ran them through a super clean neutral amp.

Also as mentioned before indeed they sounded great in warm amps still, I used then in my LP for a while and thoroughly enjoyed them on it. Just improved everything they already did well. My favorite sub 500 can

Yeah that’s true, it’s unusual for that to be the case, a positive though in my mind lol

Yes, I couldn’t agree more! This also makes anything piano (especially jazz and classical piano) come to life. Thanks to the Hemps I rediscovered for myself Robert Glasper, and I’ve been on an extended Jazz kick.

And I should probably say thanks to @Littledrummerboy for selling me his Hemps (wired balanced none the less)!

Started listening to the Hemps on a Chord Mojo last night, so far a really good pairing.

Want to know why it sounded “a little bright”? Because I had the dac1321 digital volume turned all the way up, resulting in periodic signal clipping. (See Soekris dac1321 post for details.) Once turned down such that the DAC internal DSP had a usable amount of headroom it sounded great! So disregard my above comments - this pairing sounds EXCELLENT! Just be careful with your dac1321 volume setting.

That will do it. I was also going to say filters but that can make it bright and harsh too

This is the case for all soekris as well

Really gotta try the hemps eventually. Seems like something I would enjoy.

minor rant - every time I use the Hemps I go through this whole routine with the massive cable to get it positioned on my desk. It’s a general Grado issue, but seriously this cord weighs more than the headphones! If I don’t position it right it’ll either rip the headphones off my head, knock my coffee/keyboard/mouse around, or just get tangled. It’s a pain in the butt!

minor praise - But ohhhhh, these sound so good! The dac1321+G111+(HQPlayer) is really remarkable!

It would be nice if they switched to a more IEM styled braided cable. They could keep the 4/8/12 conductor versions and it could still be attached but it would be vastly more manageable.

It would really just be best if they made it detachable from the factory, would solve everyone’s problems lol

Yes, but I think they’ve said they don’t ever intend to do that since they consider the cable part of the tuning and don’t think it needs changing. While I don’t personally agree with that philosophy, an IEM style braided cable would be the best option that still fits with it.

I want to say that the Hemps are far beyond my expectation, their presentation of particularly older guitar centric music is phenomenally addictive listening. Examples include, Rumours (Fleetwood Mac), Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath) or The Key (Joan Armatrading). Guitars and drums have so much attack and snap. Bass is enough to support them and the cymbals are tight and zingy. I note that keyboard and female vocals sound particularly good, very lifelike.

This is the first pair of headphones I’ve listened to where I feel like the price I paid is genuinely reflected in what I hear. I am having trouble putting them down. It makes me want to listen with other Grados and wonder why they are less popular.

Grados were all the rage, then suddenly werent. I dont think their stock comfort helps in this day and age. But they were ALWAYS a great choice for classic rock.

Changed the gimbals for Nyczaj aluminium replacements. High quality and an improvement in clamping - not more or less but more subtle, less springy. Grados are definitely not mad for modding. Removing the stock plastic fittings is destructive and not very fun. Worthwhile result though.

I also bought his ear pads. They are super, super comfy. I also feel like they are a closer sound to the original than the large Geekria pads. Your ear is closer to the driver again and I feel like detail is benefitting from this. A bit more mid bass than stock but not in a bad way. They do need to be properly seated - there is a hidden foam ring inside them that has to be properly over the lip of the cup and it makes all the difference. Worth the money.

My various Grado and Grado like HP’s have been a guilty and quietly kept secret pleasure for years.
They lost their general popularity in the community but work very well for much of the music I listen to and I’m very much in the minority in enjoying their light weight and comfort. All of mine have aftermarket mods and ear pads and I find them superior to stock and will never go back
I have enjoyed them with my LTA, Pass and A&S amp for years, they don’t let me down and are simply a guilty pleasure I keep to myself. :hugs::heart:
Congratulations and many years of happy listening to you @Gothique !

I must admit I kind of fancy trying one of the others too. The Hemp has been a revelation.
