General Speaker Help/Discussion Thread

I’ve only had a handful of speaker so by no means a good resource. Are you looking for a floor stander or bookshelf?

Not really looking for new speakers as I am very happy with my Polk R200 speakers right now (it’s only been a day with the speaker stands, but I had the Polk speakers since October but it was on the floor). Right now I am currently enjoying a Festival, but after I get home today I want to try to move my furniture again to make sure nothing is in front of the speakers and when I look left/right I can see my speakers. Might experiment moving the speakers closer if I am not too tired, if not, will do it another weekend.

Only thing I am looking for in the market is a good pre amp + power amp that has good synergy with the Mojo Audio Mystique Evo DAC. Really new to the speaker world, pretty much started yesterday when I realize the importance of speaker placement and speaker stands. Not too familiar with any brand as speaker brands and headphone brands are very different. For pre amps, I want I am currently interested in the Allnic L-5000/L-8000 DHT or the Supratek Cabernet DHT to get some 45 tubes into the system and for power amp. I don’t really know any power amp except for the First Watt SIT 3. Kinda want to at least demo an all Allnic OTL/OCL Speaker setup since I really respect Allnic with their HPA-5000XL for headphones. I am open to pre amp that is not DHT, but I am just really curious with 45 tube amps. Other tubes I am interested in is 6BX7.

Any Klipsch heritage series owners here? Cornwall Forte or Heresy?
Wondering if anyone heard them with a MZ3 at the helm.

@NickMimi has. The Heresy.

Go read here. Klipsch Love or Hate, it’s all good - #12

The Heresy is one of the few speakers that can play on an MZ3 decently.

The Forte would probably sound “better” to you, personally I feel it is the speaker that sits in the “sweet spot” of the entire Heritage line for most people. Not sure that an MZ3 would be enough for them though. An MZ3 might be ok for lower volume, low level listening, it will probably sound a bit “light”, the amp is OK, and I play with it often but it’s not a particularly hefty watt. :person_shrugging:

The Heresy is NOT for most people, and honestly I’m pretty sure you would dislike it. The MZ3 is fun to play with and every so often I’ll drop it in line as a speaker amplifier but I just could not see myself using it as a daily driver. :person_shrugging:

Thanks Nick that’s helpful. I really enjoy the MZ3 but having a hard time finding a spot for it long term in my collection so trying to think of a good way to keep it lol

If you can use it to do pre-amplification duties somewhere, that would be MUCH more value added. It’s a damned fine HP amplifier, i adore mine, never use it as a HP amp but it’s damned good. I almost exclusively use mine as the pre-amp in my secondary system, don’t need it BUT, it is both convenient, i like the volume control, and for what it costs worth every penny as far as performance goes. :man_shrugging: Dollar for dollar it’s a difficult piece to let go of and replace. IMO “better” would easily cost more $$$, allot more…

Okay, hot take and just one man’s opinion, so please don’t take offense, but if you can’t, then just don’t.

Don’t force yourself to keep something because you feel like you got a good deal on it or because you read somewhere that people popularly love it. If it doesn’t fit for your use-case, trim, consolidate, and improve. By now you know what you like.

In reflection, I’m quite sure at a point, I had 5 headphones, 3 IEMs, multiple cables for all of them, 3 amps, 3 DACs, and 3 sets of speakers. I only had one set of ears! Yes, choice and combination was a luxury, but at the end of the day, I found myself gravitating towards 1-2 combos anyways. That’s when I purged everything and consolidated. Now, I have 1 main speaker setup, 1 home theater, 1 IEM and can’t be happier. I have something for each use-case and just stopped and enjoyed the listening. Yes, gear is fun, but the other half is listening too.

Ok, off of the podium now.

tbh not really a hot take and we share most of this opinion. I sold stuff here that I owned even only for a few weeks if I figured out I have something else I prefer or better fits me or simply if I didn’t have a good justification to keep it, regardless of how good that gear might be.
I have one source, one DAC, two amps, two headphones. I consider that a pretty lean collection.
I like the MZ3, I won’t keep it if I don’t have good use for it.

@Veritas @NickMimi this conversation yesterday and some USAM luck last night was the little nudge I needed… if all goes well I’ll have more to share tomorrow.

Speaker placement and seat placement will absolutely make a difference in your enjoyment and the experience you get w/your equipment and sound character.

The pictures I have taken may look as if these speakers are placed out of convenience but they are NOT. Each speaker in the particular placement it is in presents the sound stage in a varied fashion.

I’m not going into a lengthy discussion of every detail, each room will be different and require experimentation on your part, it’s the way it is. All I can do is encourage you to experiment, follow general placement practices and take your time to get a feel for your room acoustics, it has paid off for me and my music provides me many hours of pleasure and enjoyment because I took my time to experiment and understand my own space :pinched_fingers:

Happy listening all.

A good friend told me when I was first getting serious about my 2-CH system, that “no one speaker will do it all”. He was right of course. What I’ve realized since I began that nearly three year journey however is that you can get one speaker that is right for you. One speaker to do all that you want from YOUR music. If you’re very careful about your choice, your amp, your DAC, your cables, your room acoustics and if you’re being realistic your expectations… then he was wrong. You can get one speaker that fully satisfies all that you want from that 2-CH system.

The caveat to this however is that you’ve got to be 100% sure in the direction you want to go, don’t get caught in hype and be willing to go against the current if it sounds right to you.

There isn’t anything right now that I’m missing, on the contrary, I now look forward to my “me” listening time. @Veritas said something a few days ago that resonated with me. I’ve not longed for a piece of gear in quite some time. So I’m giving myself the approval to stop looking.

Instead taking the rest of the summer at least to become an expert in my current system as I’m still in the “honeymoon” stage of everything clicking into place. It’s a nice feeling though.

I’m becoming very curious about this speaker, especially since Steve also made the box design available for purchase as a DIY plan. I follow the Lii speakers on FB and they have a large following across the world.

Recently I got a taste of some impressive 2 channel soundstage, basically, as best as I can describe it, a sensation of sitting in the mouth of a Godzilla sized speaker. Maybe a better description is that of a multi speaker home theater system done well, where you are in the middle of the sound but not localizing any speakers above, behind, to the side or in front of you.

This experience got me thinking and I swapped out equipment again and decided to play with moving my speakers around to see if I could bring this incredible depth out using a different amplifier but back it off just a wee bit so that the stage kept just in front of my face so that I still felt as if the band and singer are in front of me as opposed to me sitting on the stage with them. (This room is just too small and it feels weird sitting on stage, in my larger room the effect works better)

In order to maintain my low end centered and full I have to sit in the bass node which only allows me about 24” of play back and forth with my chair. Instead, I was able to bring the speakers into the room a full 66”. This is about 12” shy of them being in the middle of the room :flushed:

With the right songs, recorded in a way that enhances the experience, the soundstage is righteous :muscle:
Just about any track by Port Sulpher Band, and surprisingly Seasick Steve’s albums work well.

I have no idea what the consensus amongst audiophiles or even a general listener is on what “good sound” is. I’ve stopped caring after spending so much money and I’m simply stuck on satisfying my own cravings for what I find enjoyable

This post is simply a reminder to remember that it’s FREE, and will cost you nothing to move your speakers and your chair. I’m fortunate in that I emptied out my listening rooms of everything but equipment and a listening chair. I have the luxury of moving speakers and keep surprising myself at how cool acoustics is.
Happy listening to all :pinched_fingers:

Gratuitous photo: Speakers currently almost half way into the room to deepen the soundstage and enhance the multi-dimensional effect of space in the music.

That’s basically where my spatials lived as well lol, almost middle of the room to really get the most space they could offer, they just weren’t the same with more traditional placement that I used with my other speakers

Ah…it feels sooo good to have some consensus from someone whose opinion I trust. :hugs: :+1:

I was starting to think my own choice in what sounds really good was getting twisted. Dealers rooms simply don’t have the level of soundstage effects I’m getting out of my rooms and I was starting to think I’m the weird one :joy:

I think with a lot of open baffle or dipole speakers it’s really important to get a lot of space behind them, but isn’t as important how close they are to the sides of the room, at least that’s been my experience for the most part. Makes owning some of the open baffle or panel speakers a hassle, since you mostly have to dedicate the space of the room to them for how far into the middle of the room they end up being lol (although if you’re running a high end 2ch system, you’re likely already sacrificing the usability of the room anyways regardless of speaker tech so not a huge deal lol)

@m0n, i have to admit in all honesty if you absolutely FORCED me, at gunpoint to have to stick with a single pair of speakers and get rid of the rest, my choice would be open baffle design with field coil drivers included. I would have to sell everything to accommodate them and start from scratch but those are the speakers I would ultimately go with in that scenario

Hallelujah, or good friends willing to help move stuff around while you sit in the chair :joy:
