You’re cool too!
I’ve read most of that huge D8000 thread on Head-Fi recently. The general consensus is that there is a difference in sound between the LE and Pro when using the same pads. Many think the LE is tuned with more bass than the Pro, similar to the OG D8000, to compensate for the new Washi pads reducing the bass level. There’s one user that really likes the Washi pads on his OG. I think the Washi pads might not be a good fit for the Pro since that is already a bit brighter with its stock G pads. The G Pads supposedly raise the bass quantity on the OG or LE.
My sudden interest in all this is my unplanned purchase of an OG D8000 recently. I’d been curious about it for years, and I finally decided to give them a try. As I probably mention too often here and elsewhere, I’m very happy with my Elite and chain at the moment, so much so that I’m having second thoughts about my purchase of another super-expensive open-back planar. And I forgot to mention, I haven’t even received them yet!
Does anyone currently have a regular D8000 Pro? Maybe we do a little swapping and see if it is just pads, maybe the LE will be better for me if i grab
regular Pro pads and keep those special ones mint.
Looking at you few since i know youre close-ish. @dB_Cooper @orrman @Camus @PaisleyUnderground @karangovil
Well maybe I’ll pick up the washi pads to know for sure, since they can be purchased right now. Although $179 to satiate my curiosity… Hmmm
Nice ! Looking forward to your thoughts
Damn, i didnt know they made replacements. When i looked when i bought the LE the vendor didnt know if theyll ever make them.
Yeah I asked about it too awhile back and got the same response, but I guess now it’s available
For those interested…
My concern is I’m not good at replacing the pads on these. They are more troublesome to put on out of everything.
that is tempting… I think I’ll let someone else test on their pro first and report back I probably should buy new pads soonish though
You buy one pad, and I buy the other?
Sorry dude, I don’t have a D8000 Pro. I had borrowed a regular D8000 for a while, and ironically it had the Pro pads on it. I enjoyed them very much for their more balanced signature compared to the Pro I had tried a few weeks before.
When I just got my LE I also had the Pro here for a very very short time and from memory they definitely sounded different. But take that with a bucket of salt. @Draaly has some more formed opinions on the two.
I will say the new pads are way more comfortable.
Sorry @Souldriver but I don’t have either here anymore.
@hifiDJ I saw one of your older posts about using Double Helix adapters with your D8000. Would you recommend them? Do they have the locking 3.5mm connectors like the Final cables? I’m going back and forth between getting these ultra-short adapters and a relatively cheap AudiophileNinja XLR cable for my new D8K. I have two nice ZMF XLR cables that I’d like to be able to use with the D8K, but I wonder if it gets a bit too unwieldy with the adapters and mini-XLR connectors hanging down from the headphones.
I think they’re good adapters, albeit a bit pricey… The ones with no wire are what I have. If you need adapters, they’re a great option. Just be aware you might be waiting a long time for them… or not, depending on how persistent your are in reminding Peter from dhc.
For the most part, they are transparent. The only HP I had issue with was the yammy.
Nope. They use the universal 3.5 connector which is longer than usual to account for the socket’s depth. Just make sure to mention it on your order notes.
Try the stock cable first, then if you end up liking the d8k but want to use your zmf cables, consider the well-built dhc.
I have zmf cables, I think the lektrik and 2k copper, and they’re not that heavy so I think you should be fine. As long as you’re ok with one long connection point, I think you’ll be ok. But if you’re worried, just get the adapter with wire for peace of mind. Don’t worry about the cable touching your shoulders since the cups on the d8k rotate flexibly.
Thank you for all that useful information! I think you’re right, I need to make sure I like the headphones with the stock cable before making any more purchases. I really wish they came with an XLR cable in the box, but I need to spend some time with the SE output of my Mjolnir 3 anyway. I’ve read that the D8K is pretty easy to drive, so I’m sure it will sound great.
Been daily-ing the modwright ha300 atm and the pairing with the d8kp is so nice, really good synergy. It pulls back a bit of that forwardness while still maintaining its textural capabilities. It also softens the stage a bit enough to where it isn’t so sharp, a trait I’m not so fond of. Even though I prioritize performance above all, this pairing is just really great to listen to
I have an original D8k that I’ve always had pro pads on and really like them. I recently got a set of the new washi pads from the LE and tried them out. I think they are a touch brighter than the pro pads but the difference is subtle. Anyone else tried them?
Looks like they allowed people to listen to the x8k prototype. Anybody at Munich heard it?
Looks like this guy on Reddit did:
Final X8000 - OK, wow, these were the biggest surprises of the show, if not my whole audio experience. I was not ready for this, with these it was as if I was listening to my library for the first time. They’re still in semi prototype phase and were paired with the D8000 earpads as the new ones weren’t ready yet.
Sounds were coming out of nowhere, details I didn’t realise were there, everything spinning around my head. I’m dying to see the frequency response, I doubt this is neutral in any way but man are they fun. During the 20 minutes I spent with them, I didn’t experience any harshness or weird timbre, just plenty of details presented clearly all around me. The bass was a bit shy though but I’m not worried, the D8000 Pro are my favourite headphones and with some EQ they have the best bass I ever heard so I’m hoping to hear these with some EQ and original earpads. One major downside though, MSRP is expected to be around 5000€, ouch!
edit: The expected of release for the X8000 is early 2025!
Responding to a comment asking to elaborate on X8000 comparisons:
Hm, I’ve never heard anything similar to the X8000 tbh. If anything, I would compare it to the Stax family for the sheer resolution. A better comparison to the Susvara would be the D8000 Pro; the Susvara has more natural treble and better mids while the D8000 Pro has better bass.
Keep in mind that the earpads for the X8000 are not done yet and they mentioned it won’t be available until early 2025. Sorry if I’m not much of a help.
Taking all of this with a grain of salt, obviously, but the D8KP’s layering and bass was its special sauce (acoustic bass was chef’s kiss.) Hopefully they fixed the driver rattle when EQ’ing the bass and gave it a more cohesive stage.
