Fiber optic, Cat 8, ethernet switches, and audio networking components

I spoke to the seller about it, they buy old corporate equipment in bulk. You need to buy one that’s unclaimed and already configured licensing is for cloud management and claiming the device to use in your cloud manged environment. I won’t be able to make changes to it, but I don’t need it as a managed switch, just basic network switch functionality.

I’ll confirm when I get it.

Ive been running into an inconsistent issue lately.

I have an Asus XT8 mesh network, 1 as a main router and 2 nodes. I had a few Monoprice Cat8 cables from monoprice come in and ive been using those, why not they were the same price as the Cat6.This has all worked well and dandy and serviced the PC and K50 in my room well, until i was cleaning up one day.

I was cleaning, dusting, and reorganizing so i unplugged the router and replugged it back in when i was done, but on my next transfer i noticed speeds were limited to 10Mbps. The Asus app confirmed it was limited to either 100or 10 Mbps. Hmmmmm, so i played around, restarted a bunch, and unplugged and replugged things in and eventually the app showed both my PC and K50 were back to 1Gbps, a new file transfer confirmed it was back to it’s self, which was a 100+ Mbps baseline. I also leave it facing down just incase.

A few weeks later i am under my desk and i bump into the node lightly, i think nothing of it but later that day speeds are decimated again. Speed tests and the Asus app confirmed this again. No combo of unplugging, replugging, power cycling of the node /components/ports, or voodoo tilting are helping.

I grab one of the spare new Cat8 cables, an old Cat6, and my laptop to test…

  • I plug the both test cables into the back of the node, i plug the Cat6 into the laptop and get full 1Gbps. Ok so maybe I had 2 bad cables.
  • I unplug the 6 and put in the Cat8. Laptop is still zipping. Ok so it definitely is the previous cables!
  • I plug the Cat6 into the main PC, into the same pc nic ive always used. Speeds are great and reading 1Gbps again. How did these original cables fail?
  • I unplug the Cat6 and replug it into the main PCs other nic, the old Cat8 goes back into the original nic. New nic is great, old nic is degraded. 100% bad cables.
  • I plug the new and seemingly working Cat 8 back into the laptop, it is not being recognized in the Asus app, the laptop is trying to connect but sees no internet. Playing with it I can get a connection but it is degraded. Ok a fluke? Maybe the router doesnt like the monoprice cables…
  • I replug the Cat6 into the main PCs original nic, and its degraded. Unplugged, replugged, changed router ports, still degraded. I… I dont know…
  • Cat6 to the new pc nic, all is great. Old Cat8 to the new nic, also back to 1 Gbps. Definitive troubleshooting would have been too good for me.

I leave this as is since it is working and that cable is routed nicely. I bring the new Cat8, Cat6, and laptop to the spare node which never has anything plugged in. Both cables read 1Gbps when using that node, speed tests hit 200 Mbps which is more than expected but is much closer to the main router. I get the feeling the metal shielding on the Cat8s connectors may be interfering somehow maybe causing issue with the ports/jacks. I will probably order some Cat6a cables to eliminate this possibility.

But plan of action hoping each step is a fix before proceeding:

  1. I am going to wipe and redo the node in my room. Despite all settings being checked, and limiters and QOS being off maybe something got funky.
  2. Find another Cat6 and replace what is there, hope it is stable.
  3. Swap the extra node with the “bad” one since wireless works totally ok.
  4. Firmware update, which i try to avoid as it has caused issues in the past.
  5. Pop open the bad node and see if the ports have moved or had been damaged or something.
  6. Be pissed and buy yet another router/network device to replace this system.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

You may have a cold solder on the RJ45 jack.

Possibly if it is on a board and all 3 jacks are attached in the node. It would be an odd one though.

I think the metal jackets on the Cat8 connectors are causing an issue.

To keep it short i reset the node and rebuilt it up, i plugged the pc back in and everything was working fine so i thought it was that the node got janky. I plug the k50 in and its not being recognized. I fiddle around and try different ports and some power cycles, but i grabbed an old plastic connector cat5e and i plugged it in and it been fine.

If the issue happens again with the 6 and 5e i will swap nodes with the spare.

If it’s dropping the 10MBits, it’s almost certainly either the cable or the connection to it.
Modern ethernet autosenses the cable, you can even swap Tx and Rx at one end and it’ll figure it out, but if one or more conductors is shorted or disconnected, it’ll drop down to just using one of the lines at 10MBits. It can be a pain in the ass to track a bad cable down, because it can cause an entire subnet to drop to 10MBits.

Helpful hint if you find a bad cable throw it away, or you’ll need a cable later and reuse it….

I will probably send them back to Monoprice since they warranty them for life.

I would be surprised if it was just a bad cable since it kept happening with 3 of those Cat8s more often than not. Even when it said it would be set to 100 Mbps it would just lope around 10 in practice. Only when reading 1Gbps did it ever perform as it should. But maybe i got a bad batch. The common thing I can find is I do think maybe the metal connectors needed to be perfect in the jack or else it would not connect or short out.

I am content leaving it as it, not only as its been a long day working under the desk, but i HATE when things that should just work… dont. And once i get it back working i do t want to fuck with it.

I was thinking since my PC was dual nic seeing if i can connect it and the K50 direct and see what that gets me, but i am not sure that would work. And long term the k50 needs internet access to update and function properly.

I will probably still grab some monoprice Cat6a cables, i just need to figure out which color makes the data go fastest.

Confirmed, works as an unmanaged switch. Just make sure you get one being sold as unclaimed.

Twenty minutes to remove the power supplies, another 20 minutes to create a block out plate for the AC mains input and install the 2.1 mm DC power plug in its place. Also, remember to check polarity when soldering the wires. 90% pretty sure you remember which is positive and negative at the board is not good enough and will save you from having to reopen it and redo the soldering.

Derp.

Also threw some RF shielding material on the recommended places as per the video.

I picked one up off Ebay for $38, got rid of a fiber media converter in my network.

You don’t need a subscription to manage it through the Meraki Dashboard.
There isn’t anything in the configuration you’d ever want to touch in a home network.
I doubt I’ll ever log in again.
It does have so potentially useful trouble shooting info, and it looks to be how firmware is upgraded.
But for $38 it’s a damn good deal.

I know, I’m looking at another one for the TV and the Apple TV box.

I got robbed! I paid $50 for mine but that’s because I wanted one with a pristine case. The beat up ones I’ve sees as low as in the $25 range. lol

Yes, mines not very beat up, but certainly not pristine, but it sits on a dust covered shelf under a desk, so I don’t ever need to look at it.

Having recent issue with my wifi network where we have multi devices slowing down or getting disconnected. Wondering if anyone has a good source that I can read on trying to improve the network speeds?

The isp (century link) and connection are fine as I’ve measured it consistently for and download speeds. We live in a relatively tight area with many houses within range I can see maybe 20 other networks available from my phone. We have 3 Rokus, 3 phones, 2 iPads, 3 laptops, 3 wifi music streamers. But up until now it was fine but the last two weeks it slows to a stand still. I also get booted on my phone from 5 ghz and it will say incorrect password although correct. We do have a wifi range extender but the slow speeds seems to be even when standing next to router or far away in coverage.

Any resources I can read or listen to at night would be helpful.

How old is your Wifi router, you really shouldn’t get big slowdowns, the way Wifi works is it channel hops when packets aren’t received, so unless there is some continuous stream of data blocking all the channels, you really shouldn’t see greatly diminished performance. Some routers are better at this than others.

Range Extenders can be problematic, assuming it’s an extender and your not talking Mesh endpoints. But it hasn’t changed, so I’d assume it’s not the issue.

The fact your getting booted on your phone, there might be a network with the same name, though outside of logging in, that shouldn’t really be problematic either.

Dead spots aren’t unusual, but again you wouldn’t expect it if nothing has changed.
There are tools available to map dead spots and that might give you some information, you basically walk around the space with a tablet or phone, and it measures reception level.

Do you know if your neighbors are having similar problems? it could be something pumping noise on to the Wifi frequencies, but short of someone deliberately doing it, I’d doubt it would impact both 5 and 2.4GHz.

Your not going to find a lot of info troubleshooting issues like this, the basic idea is simplify until it stops happening, then try and isolate a cause. But that doesn’t help if it’s an external factor.

I’d also suggest doing some sort of continuous ping from a device to assure you have connectivity when the network is bogged. Duplicate IP addresses, DNS issues all sorts of things can impact performance.

Your router may have some diagnostic tools that can help show you what devices are attached and their utilization if something is just wonky.

Ive had issues with specific routers and specific phone updates. Same thing where i cant connect to networks i always had no issue with prior or it disconnects with no notice randomly. Me and a family member have the same phone and the same update go us both.

If all else fails you can always try to factory reset your router and build it a new. Ive also had older (not even that old but older) routers just like to stop working well. A totl netgear did this on me after 3-4 years, it would just drop completely 1-2 times per day and nothing would help. I then decided to just move on.

My last Router was about 12yrs maybe 15yrs old and I suffered similar to what you are describing. I updated everything to include my switches and the level of service and that fixed all my issues. :person_shrugging:

Troubleshooting question for all the smart people here - when I use my sonore opticalmodule with the antipodes K50 it works as expected. When I unplug it from the K50 and connect the Ethernet to my Lyngdorf TDAI-1120 the amp doesn’t connect to the network. If I plug the Lyngdorf directly to the router it works as expected.

What might cause this pairing to malfunction?

Short version, nothing I can think of, unless something is out of spec, or the ethernet connector on the cable from the optical module is dodgy.
I’d try swapping that with another one, but I wouldn’t consider that a high likely hood fix.
Optical converters are pretty dumb devices they should generally either work or not, there isn’t a lot of scope for incompatabilities.

Only thing I’d add is look at link light to see if you can gleam something from what they’re showing you. Sometimes cables can be finicky or you may be using a reversed patch cable that one device can work with and one can’t? Just a long shot guess.

As Poly said, it should work without issues, there’s no intelligence at play.

I think the model was first released in 2016 and was installed in 2018.

This is the model of range extender we are using:

The modem and wireleass router AIO is located in our basement in the utility room and we have the extender upstairs in our primary living space to get better coverage on the upper level.

I asked a few neighbors and none of them are having any issues with speed or connectivity. We all use the same ISP as it’s part of our HOA. For us everything was working fine up until about a month ago and just tons of dropped connections, speed issues, and my phone still can’t access the primary 5.0 ghz wifi band. The 5.0 ext, 2.4 ext, and 2.4 main all work fine.
