Ah, that makes sense. I was trying to say “middle of the road for 3k rrp” not “middle of the road for sus/1266” as I find the latter a bit harder to nail down
My bad then, gotcha. I’d say it’s one of the top options around 3k for the susvara and 1266 personally
Tbh, I may prefer forge/maigwai se more for sus sub 3k but very heavy trade offs there. Other options seem to basicaly just be V550 and idk what even else tbh. Eveb ignoring quality power finding something that just runs sus properly ans actualy have micro detail in that range isn’t easy.
Yes that’s one of the biggest problem, the susvara’s strength lies in that lower resolution, texture, and microdynamics, and many things in the 3k range just don’t have that to where the susvara will really shine
Also so far I like it a bit more with the 1266 than I do the susvara at this point I should mention
I not gunna lie, I don’t even think sagra → 13r does micro or texture particularly well…
I’d agree, the sagra isn’t the best with micro whatever overall, and while I think the 13r handles microdynamics pretty well, it’s overall resolving power isn’t really great enough for it to excel at microdetail or texture imo (for the price class)
Just currious, what will still give some good slam but have better micro/texture (without being boring since I think sus could probabaly go that way pretty quick) in the same price range? I’m kinda planning to step up anyways but just currious
I’d look for a modwright ha300, arcturus elysium, used allnic hpa5000xl. But honestly you can swing a wa33 in that range so I’d really look toward that for the price
yah, fair enough. wa33 and 13r realy arent all that far apart used. dac wise I am assuming something like a morph may be a better choice?
Yes, although are far apart in sound lol
For more lower level information for sure
Is it something I should consider getting in addition to the v550 I have or, should I just hang with the v550 and take the money and continue saving & look for something else?
EDIT:
I think this answered my question, for now.
I’d do the ladder, the V550 and Ferrum stack trade blows, and while I might favor the 1266 on the ferrum, honestly with a susvara I might see value in both the ferrum and 550. So basically if you currently enjoy your 550, stick with your 550 until you want to move to the next tier
V550 is turning out to be a good value for its class.
It is (keep in mind I am basing this off the 590 since I’ve not heard a 550, but I’ve heard amp wise they are pretty similar), it basically takes most aspects I liked about the niimbus for technical ability without scaling back too much, gives it a more enjoyable and flexible voicing imo. It really is a solid amp, and I don’t really see a reason to buy a niimbus at this point
I appreciate you being specific. I assume (which may be wrong) that the V590 is the same amp as the 550, sans DAC. And would sound the same.
That’s what I have heard as well. But yes solid amp for the money, a logical successor to the v281 while taking performance to the next tier. But I still wish they made a version with similar voicing to the 281 lol. It’s def an amp to potentially consider over the ferrum stack depending on the headphones you have and what voicing you are after, trades good blows from memory
I just realized I didn’t ask my follow up questions.
What are the Ferrum stack and the v550 trading blows over?
and, with regard to the Susvara in particular what values are catching your attention?
The ferrum has better impact and slam
The ferrum also has slightly better grip and control
The v550 has better low level resolving power and more low level detail
The v550 has better microdynamics
The ferrum has better macrodynamics
The ferrum has a wider stage
The v550 has been depth and placement accuracy
The v550 has blacker background
The ferrum has better speed and separation (but less natural than 550)
The v550 has better treble extension
The ferrum has better bass extension
The v550 has better timbe
I personally like the tonality on the ferrum a bit more
The ferrum is smoother
The v550 has more texture
The macrodynamics, grip and control, impact, and stage width stand out on the ferrum
The microdynamics, low level resolution, stage depth, and timbre stand out on the vio
I like the ferrum if you want to emphasize the more forgiving and fun aspect the headphone can have, l like the vio for emphasizing it’s low level resolution and control and more organic stage and presentation
I’d bet a Holo Cyan DAC would make a hellofvah pretty stack with those.
