Interesting you say that because I didn’t like the Spring 3 with the Susvara much… I guess that’s the nice subjective part of our hobby.
As for the Ferrum stack with the TC - I think the first you’ll need to judge is the synergy there before you make decisions on changing DACs because there’s a chance you won’t like that combo. Depending on what you want to get out of your 1266 I can see how that happens. I owned both but in different times (still have the TC, sold the Oor and Hypsos)
I am focusing mainly on getting the best bass slam from it, the Ferrum is apparently a good match for that. Lets see how the rest of the presentation is.
Correct, a newly unpacked Hypsos will ask you to go through initial setup (got mine 2d ago). So someone forget to reset-factory-default …and NO, the spot is not there usually!
After extracting the package from the zip file, inside the folder you will see a README - this contains a complete history of all the changes. Mostly the updates are for new devices added to the configuration menu. They don’t specifically mention any significant internal changes or improvements since v1.2.0.
Edit:
Some have reported sonic improvements even though not listed in the change log. I am skeptical of that and it has not been my experience. But hey, my ears maybe crap YMMV.
Also- Disclaimer I don’t rush out and update just to update. I did do an update once, but that was after noticing some fixes for over current conditions. I’m on v1.5.0 and am in no hurry to update unless there is a compelling reason or I need xtra functionality that is offered.
Hey guys, what is your take on adding a tube preamp for the OOR? I was told even a Schiit Freya would be a good option.
I mainly use the OOR to drive a 1266 and a HE6, usually i go with the Quicksilver for dynamic cans.
The idea of adding some tube sound into the OOR’s signature sound very interesting! Since the 1266 already pairs well with the Quicksilver i am thinking it would maybe sound even better with a tube preamp and the OOR…
I haven’t heard the Oor, but I’ve used tube preamps with SS headphone amps and have had positive results.
I’ve done this with a Saga+ and LTA MZ3 as the preamp for a couple of amp such as the Rupert Neve RNHP, and a Custom Inverting O2. I really liked the Saga/RNHP combo, it really expanded the soundstage, but I lost a little bit of resolution.
From my understanding the Freya+ is a much better preamp than the Saga so there shouldn’t be a resolution penalty like the Saga. At least not as bad.
I say give it a shot. Schiit has a pretty gracious return policy, and their gear usually sells pretty quickly on the used market as well. You may really like it.
I’ve used the Woo WA22 as a preamp to the Oor and liked it a lot. From memory it added a bit more of the warmth and holographicness that the rather flat Oor gives you without it. I did it for a Susvara chain.
At the end tough it didn’t make sense to me because that chain was around $4.5K and I simply switched it for an Enleum and never looked back.
There is a difference, balanced is better, but it’s not night and day.
What are you trying to achieve?
I personally wouldn’t bother with active preamps with headphone amplifiers, but I do know some do.
IMO you’d be better taking the money and putting it towards upgrading your DAC or Amp.
What i have in mind is to bring some of the tube sound i hear in the Quicksilver headphone amp i to the OOR, i am thinking that with the OOR’s power and control a more tubey sound would be cool.
A friend of mine suggested this little guy instead:
Honestly - I think you would be better suited to look towards the Woo Wa22 as a pre. I believe that both @orrman & @OneEyedHito used the wa22 as pre with the OOR in power-amp mode and found it positive.
FWIW, I personally have not heard that combo above. I’m quite pleased with the OOR as it is with nominal voltage from the Hypsos and mid gain setting on the amp for my setup with the Spring3 KTE as DAC using balanced out.
