Ferrum Audio thread, Hypsos / Oor / Erco

I mean, tbf, headphones only get so expensive. Not even shang sr or valkyria reach the coat of some of the dacs this place has made me lust after

In the context of when I wrote that yeah, I guess the 909s appear disproportionate - however I was just trying them out with that setup to see how they faired. The chain of Spring3 KTE/Orr+Hypsos is to support the Susvara, and I intend to move it all over to its own rack and get if off my desk completely and make a dedicated listening area.

My daily driver headphone cost 1/9 of the dacamp driving it. That’s how it goes!

Question for Ferrum Oor owners. Do the pre-outs automatically cut out if you insert headphones? I don’t see any buttons or switches to turn off the pre-outs.

I’m considering buying an Oor to connect to my powered monitors in addition to being a headphone amp, so I wouldn’t want the monitors blasting out music while I’m listening to headphones. Even after reading the manual online, I don’t see any mention of how this would work.

They are always on

For when you have speakers in you will need to unplug the headphones, and when you want only headphones you will either have to turn off the speakers or put some sort of switch in the path (which kinda defeats the point of the preamp feature). For powered monitors, you could use something like a footswitch for power to turn them on and off easily

Edit: or just unplug the cables on the back

Did they tell you anything else about this new DAC (price, topology, etc)?

Awesome impressions so far btw, thanks for sharing!

Thanks, all your suggested workarounds are appreciated but would quickly irritate me, so it’s better to just take the Oor off my list.

I’m looking for a SS amp to replace both my Burson Soloist 3XP (which I only use for headphones because I hate their UI) and a Jot 2 (which I only use to provide volume to my powered monitors). It’s not the end of the world to have 2 SS amps, and I definitely have the space, but it would have been nice to go from 2 to 1, and I thought this was the one!

Sorry, I didn’t really ask, since I’m not in the market for a new DAC. The salesman claimed it was going to use revolutionary technology but I put that down to over-enthusiasm and didn’t press him for more detail.

Headamp GS-X Mini fits your requirements quite perfectly I believe. I owned one and loved it with some headphones. It ain’t perfect but it’s imo awesome and has great used prices compared to new in the US. (Unless you need a remote?)

Hey guys, i am getting the OOR + HYPSOS in a couple of days and i will be driving an Abyss 1266 TC with it. I have a Schiit Gungnir multibit as my DAC which i know will be my bottleneck, my question is, how much of a bottleneck will it be? Is it enough that i should think seriously about upgrading?

Not sure if anyone in here ever tried that combination but i thought I’d ask anyways

I don’t think you should worry too much about that. I would suggest trying it out first for a good amount of time and see how you end up liking the combo. If you don’t, then you can start considering.

Fwiw, when I upgraded to a Holo spring I paired it with a soloist which was the obvious bottleneck of the chain. But I still heard major improvements and still enjoyed it at the time. Just because something might be a major bottleneck, that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t experience worthwhile improvements.

I concur with what @hifiDJ said about just going for it and giving it a listen for a long while. I think you may be surprised. For grins and giggles I put a Bifrost 2 with my Ferrum stack and it sounded really pretty good. I would guess the gumby might be a nice match up. The worst that will happen is that you discover what you like and dislike about the match up and it’ll help you steer towards a DAC to try vs random trial and error.

I really enjoy the Ferrum stack I bought it to work with a Susvara and ultimately I’ve left the Spring3 KTE connected with the Ferrum stack, just because I like the way they all work together. If I wasn’t focusing specifically around the Susvara though, I think I’d have the Yggdrasil with the Ferrum.
