Audeze headphone thread, LCD 2 / 3 / X / 4 / 5 / 24

Went through 3 different songs that I’m familiar with and took notes for both headphones. Here’s what I’m hearing:

I like this track for testing bass. I listen up to 1:28.

LCD-24:
Instruments and vocals seem to come from far left and right when they come in. Stage is tall. Bigger stage in all directions compared to 4.
Imaging seems more precise compared to 4. Clearer transitions as things pan around the stage.
Punchy, percussion is fast and has good air to cymbals.
Strong sub bass extension, rumbles but doesn’t sound overblown, less bass than 4.

LCD-4:
Bass has more quantity, same texture to 24.
Left and right size is smaller, sounds more intimate.
Percussion has decent air but is less than I’d like.
Still punchy but things sound a little slower.

Summary:
On this track 24 sounds a bit more tame in that it sounds even and not overdone in any specific area. I think it wins here in making the drums sound most realistic.
The 4 has more bass energy which is fun but can sound a bit too much at times.

I like this track for seeing how a system reacts to sibilant vocals. It’s also just a nice acoustic cover

LCD-24:
Guitar has more plucking and other string sounds, more pronounced than 4.
Vocals are borderline harsh (perhaps more realistic I guess not saying harsh is bad in this case) but not overly sibilant like it can sound on other systems. More lip and breath noise on the 24.
Vocals are clear and forward. Guitar and vocals are separate in the mix but in a nice natural way. The recording leans more to the right channel but it’s not bothersome.

LCD-4:
Closer in, both guitar and vocals have more smoothness to them.
Sounds smoothed over compared to 24 but it’s nice on this track since the vocals can sound shrill at times.
Guitar still has good twang but it’s not as pronounced.
More of a romantic sound here.

Summary:
On this track, the 4 is soothing and relaxed while still retaining most of the detail.
The 24 sounds clearer but is a tad more bright on this track which is more engaging but also a bit more fatiguing here.

Just a fun high energy electronic track.

LCD-24:
There’s this weird cricket sort of sound in the beginning of this track and it’s more pronounced on the 24.
Vocals smooth and forward.
Sounds faster with a bit more energy pushing things forward if that makes sense
Less bass bloom than 4 but still good punch.
Percussion hits sound more around me and moving in and out then they did on the 4.
There’s some vocal reverb effects at the edge of the stage that I’m hearing more clearly in the 24

LCD-4:
Nice cymbal air, good vocal presence. Bass has good weight but not the most speed.
A bit soft and not as grand as I’ve heard it. Still good fun though.
Sounds rolled in the top vs the 24
Kind of losing interest in the track on the 4. Music sounds like it’s dragging in parts.

Summary:
I prefer the 24 on this track, just sounds slow and boring on the 4. First time in this brief comparison where I would take one headphone definitively over the other.

Sorry that’s a bit long, just trying to translate my notes over to the forum post.

If i knew for sure i was keeping the 24, and they were easier to source. I would try to find those OG vegan suedes for the 24. I think they are part of the magic i love on the 2.2pf.

Ill have to thank reviewers for saying buying them and popping them on those monoprice m1060s was “just as good if not better than an audeze!”

I enjoyed the 2.2pf I owned but the 24 I had on loan I thought was much better. For me it was more engaging. I suspect the gear I had when I had the 2.2pf was a major influence and if I could hear it with my current setups I might have a different take on it.

I liked the 24 over the LCD-5 and those I did have at the same time with current gear.

EDIT:
I now have my own LCD-24 that I was fortunate enough to purchase from another SA member.
Everything I remembered about it was spot on.

Hey guys, i am considering adding an used LCD-4 to my collection (found one for $2100 shipped). I used to love my LCD-X but i had to sell it back then.

Has anyone here auditioned both the LCD-X (2021) and the LCD-4? I am curious about how they compare overall, and also specifically how does bass slam compare between the two.

I am thinking that if i liked the LCD-X there is no way i would not like the LCD-4 even better? Just wanted some insight before i pull the trigger

Though I’ve not heard the 4, it is a very different animal than the X both price wise and performance wise. The 4 has quite a reputation for bass, the X does not, the X is pretty small stage-wise, might be too bright, and the variation in manufacturing was an issue. I love mine, btw, but I can’t offer you much, sorry. The 4 was also their flagship. I’m sure others can pipe in.

The 4 will be more demanding of your source gear as well.

I had both at different points and liked LCD-4 way better, although as pointed by @Souldriver, it is definitely more demanding. The detail level in 4 is pretty crazy, especially in bass. Upper mids and treble is not as great without some eq but like Audeze, they take to eq very well. They were not the most comfortable on my head and a bit redundant with other headphones so I ended up selling them but if I had the space, I would have kept them.

I am thinking the Gumby + OOR or Quicksilver will probably suffice, no? They are not super high end but still…

You have TCs right? If you’re using that stack to drive your TCs sufficiently then it should be good for the LCD-4 as well.

I do, yes. I am not sure if the TC is delivering 100% of what it has to offer in my chain but i really like how it sounds, specially with the Quicksilver which was a surprise to me.

I have pulled the trigger on the LCD-4, this one was always on my list and i bet they will have a permanent place in my collection.

One question though, the pair i got is from 2018 and the pads are showing some wear so i will get new ones. My idea was to get a pair of brand new leather pads from Audeze but i read somewhere there are better alternatives like Dekoni.

Do you guys have any experience with different pads on the LCD-4? My main focus is the bass response and comfort.

Outside of one rare occasion, ive always kept to stock pads and oem pads for replacements.

That is what i am thinking as well, i don’t want to touch the sound really but sheepskin may be more comfortable? Not sure…

The stock 4 pads should be leather and Audeze uses a good grade.

Hey guys, the LCD-4 i got is from 2018 so the headband strap is already touching the headband (carbon fiber part) when i wear them.

Has anyone replaced their strap? Or maybe just removed them, cut off a piece to make it shorter and installed them back on?

I don’t see the strap for sale on Audeze’s website, i did purchase brand new leather pads and the new leather smell alone was worth the purchase

EDIT: found this: How to shorten the suspension headband strap on Audeze LCD headphones - YouTube

Their customer support is very friendly, they may have some laying around

I have just finished shortening the stock strap, it was a 10 minute job and the result is flawless! The strap was 100% in contact with the headband before, now i see a gap exactly like we have on a brand new set.

Also a good time to make sure the bottom gimbal screws are tightened.

Hey guys, i already have the Quicksilver as my tube amp and i love it with almost all my cans, but it does little for the LCD-4 over the OOR, so i was thinking of adding a more “tubey” amp to my chain to have a different flavor.

Do you think the Bottlehead Crack with speedball would be a good fit? I am limited not only on budget but also on options since i now live in Brazil, importing big/heavy amps is not an option.
