Another Fruitless Trip To The HiFi Store... :|

Unfortunately no because I don’t like going to that area. Its in the Northlake area and that area is known to have a shooting incident like every 1-3 months. In fact, the last was a shooting incident reported on Mar 1, 2023 lol. And before that, the previous shooting incident was reported on Feb 5, 2023. The shooting never really happen in that Bestbuy, just basically across the street lol. I bought my Polk Reserve R200 speakers through Amazon Prime day. I think I got maybe $100 off, I don’t remember, but the discount wasn’t amazing.

The audio room is pretty nice for a Best Buy. They have a glass soundproof door that you will close and a couch in the middle of the room. I tested only bookshelf speakers during that time. You will be pretty close to the speakers, but it’s probably about 1 meter. One of my favorites from memory was that McIntosh speaker in that photo. Don’t remember the model, but it was way over my budget lol.

I like the audio shop suggestion in the previous post in this thread for North Carolina, Audio Advice, and Moon Audio. The problem is that I think those shops are at least 1.5 hours or 2 away, but the area is probably safer. Might go to those shops 1 day.

OOF, Northlake…I don’t blame you. First time I saw a live police chase was at the mall over there.

Yeah, that whole area just sucks. It use to be pretty good maybe like 10 years ago. But I feel like the last 5 years, something bad always happens in that area.

Wonder if that’s better or worse than the Minneapolis area o_o

Hey, I didn’t order a candy bar with this!!! :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

I went to an amazing store in Winston Salem once while visiting my parents. I’ll try and edit this with the name and location. Owner was awesome and they had audeze and DCA and maybe Abyss. I got to listen to their Wilson speakers so I was pretty happy.

Nice! Never knew a place like this existed in Winston-Salem. I checked out their websites and they even have Merason products listed there.

Looks like my AEON 2 there! And a BLACK TT2?! :open_mouth: That’s a hot demo room/store, for sure. Rather be there than waiting in line to hear 3 pre-selected songs on HE1.

Yeah, they do that. It cracks me up!

The first time I got something from them, I was like wtf?
Then the second time, again a candy bar! Same on 3rd time.

Bloom is a pleasure to work with, they are quite helpful :+1:

the elite has a somewhat uneven trebble, so it will be brighter to some than others just depending on your person HRTF. They personaly make my ears ring something fearice tbh.

Absolutely fine stance to take, but you should be aware that it will really limit your options. Upgrading transducer is almost always the most important, but in the top end of stuff synergy trumps all and you end up in places where “worse” transducers could be a better choice because you can better balance you chain around them.

It’s interesting since for the most part it’s a relatively easy listening type of tuning, but they did put a bit much in ‘air’ region. Amp/DAC pairings with it seem a little more crucial than the mostly easy tuning leads many to believe, IMO.

I really want to find a phone that shows me it has that extra potential to be had, but of course already is impressive enough to pursue. Then, I would be happy to upgrade all the equipment for it, and then see how that better equipment sounds with lesser phones again. I feel bass may be an area where better equipment will show itself most apparently, as far as raw technical traits go.

AXPONA Day 1 over. Jude Mansilla stopped about 4 feet away from me, but I didn’t get a pic…! D: Talked with the ZMF crew and Mr. ZMF himself, and he wrote down my IEM recommendations! All the headphone stuff is in a moderately sized room, divided into 2 halves. Sadly, I think it’s too noisy to really get a solid enough grasp of headphone sounds.

From the Campfire booth, everything was surprisingly good, and well-tuned! Andromeda, Supermoon, Trifecta, Solaris. Supermoon was the stand-out, I thought. Very nice guys to talk to.

From the Empire Ears booth, most things sounded alright, but held back by lack of breathability or harshness. But then I heard the best thing of the entire day without doubt, Odin. The new Raven was very similarly good sounding, but with a bassier, warmer, and obviously smoother sound, that I felt masked overall clarity and spatial definition over Odin. I felt the Hugo 2 they had to demo from was definitely too bright, compared to my phone.

From the ZMF Warship booth, I tried Atrium and Caldera, on a black DAVE and Feliks BigTubeAmp/Envy, played off a MacTop.

My notes on Atrium: highly dynamic; kinda fatiguing(in lower treble?); nice space; smooth vocals, clear; maybe kinda flat sounding; detail wall; bass impact good, not great; bass definition lacking; dulled around the edges; pretty good; a little harsh in lower treble.

My notes on Caldera: Nice imaging and space; punchy; unremarkable?; nice detail and air and sparkle; more treble focused than bass?; wish it was more bassy and smoother.

At the Audeze booth, I tested LCD-3 and 4z off Holo May and Bliss, from some MacTop with Qobuz whatever nonsense. I felt both headphones exhibited blunted resolution, but the 4z had awesome vocal realism. Vague spatial definition. Meh… The new MM-400 or whatever it was called is there. MM-100?

From the Black Ice Audio booth, I heard the upcoming ModHouse “Silver” prototype, off an Aries something hybrid tube DAC+amp. I really liked it! Smooth, pleasant, detailed, and warm-ish. Pleasant bass, not overwhelming (or very dense). Very good with no problems. Not amazing. Strong L/R presence; not very spacious. The higher end “Gold” model is also coming soon, with single or double-sided options.

From the Moon Awdeo booth, I heard Susvara, Arya Stealth, Expanse, and HE1000se, off Bartok and DCA tower. I thought HE1000se is too bright/edgy for general use, and Expanse was smoother, but still too energetic/bright, with not very good bass definition. Susvara was definitely good, but I felt a bit more harsh/fatiguing treble than HE1000se. Not a great listening experience here…

From the Mytek booth, I heard some serious stuff… Corina, X9000, Susvara, and Expanse, off GSX Mini, Mytek HPA+DAC2, and the Liberty + absolutely hulking Grand Cayman prototype. Hearing Susvara and Expanse from the HPA+DAC2 and GSX Mini was my favorite headphone experience so far, whereas there seems to be a power issue with the estats, causing them to be too bright.

Susvara + GSX Mini notes: More breathable and cleaner than Expanse+Mytek. Bass light/neutral, but good extension. Bright still… Very neutral and realistic.

Expanse + HPA+DAC2 notes: Brighter, much worse tonality. More bassy. Smoother, more “solidified” sound. Both headphones are good.

Arya Stealth + Aurender something+Anni+Qutest: Bright-neutral. Good bass impact. Great space. Fairly smooth, but a bit overly bright. Very crisp.

:trophy:Favorite item of Day 1 = Odin.
:2nd_place_medal:Runners up = Supermoon, Silver, Susvara, Arya Stealth.

I am surprised you found them fatiguing. I felt that despite their high energy they were very easy to listen to. I actually switched meshes to try to get more edge in the upper mids/lower treble. I do agree it has good to great bass impact but better definition would have helped vs just quantity. The more open mesh helps the dulled edges byt also lifts the veil and solidifies the upper frequency range. Which would be counter intuitive if you are fatiguing there.
