Another Fruitless Trip To The HiFi Store... :|

The takeaways from your fruitless audition seem to contradict often, and honestly all over the place. At first read I thought this was satire, then after reading again I realized it is not.

A few things that stand out not mentioned:

  • Bluetooth as your source
  • Speaking of source what DAC was used?
  • I see a TT2 in the picture, along with some other amps, in the five hours you were there did you not try the headphones out with more suitable gear?
  • Getting through 20 headphones in five hours must have been a few minutes/headphone, how were you able to get through them so quickly and get a sense of how they sounded?

I’m skeptical you will fare any better in your next visit trying out headphones like the Susvara, Brauva, or other TOTL options with the same approach. That’s my take, good luck

That is a pretty sweet audio room! I am super jealous of all the people with access to a audio store to demo equipments. I am located in North Carolina and the closest audio store is like 2 hours away. The closest audio room I can demo audio equipments (which is only speakers) is my local best buy. That best buy demo room got some sweet speakers though.

We have Audio Advice and Moon Audio (apt. only) in the Triangle for headphone demos, but I’ve been putting off visiting them for some time. This thread is tempting me to drop by now  .

I have things to say… but no time just yet. Time to change the :expressionless: to

(and the best part is, they USED to carry Stax… and I might be able to get them to order some models in again, to compete with this silly Bravura :pray:t2::crossed_fingers:)

Satire? Hm… I’ve been hunting for a headphone upgrade for a good while now, in research, store demo, and home demo/ownership but due to availability and cost, this has mostly meant the $0-1500 range. And from all of that, I feel like MOST planars(and maybe no dynamics) will be the answer.

  • Yep, bluetooth was used with the CMA 15 primarily at both store 1 and 2, to maintain consistency and easy of use(who knows what will be at these stores). With internal DAC of the CMA 15 used, in most cases. I tested DAVE by itself, with Bluesound Node/Vault 2i wired, and Bravura with Bluesound Vault 2i wired. And sometimes my EF400 with MLP, as mentioned in my first post.
  • I didn’t have any spare time that day to try the TT2, or Qutest, or MScaler, etc. Or the equipment they had at store 2(also a TT2), except for the DAVE  Don’t worry, I can go back to test hardware differences, once I actually get a headphone picked out.
  • I played my demo tracks, and heard what I needed to hear from each song, on each headphone. I don’t think it’s diffucult, just listen. Also spent more time testing and re-testing the best sounding ones, to be more sure.

Well, I can only test with what I have available. And if a headphone NEEDS extremely expensive gear to even sound good, then f it. Not worth buying

Is this Audio Perfection in the Twin Cities? I’ve been there a few times. I love the vibe of the place and they seem really nice.

Indeed! This is the best store I’ve been to, headphone hardware-wise, but 2nd at best for headphone selection/variety. The phones that they do have, however, are some particularly special ones… I’ll get to that in a minute! It’s funny how I randomly found this store, too… I had searched around on google for headphone stores and speaker stores a couple times, and don’t recall this showing up. I actually heard of this store from the owner of the other store, because we were talking about Magnepans, and how only ONE dealer per city is allowed(which was AP). (So I wonder what other hidden stores might be out there… Surely not a hidden Stax dealer, tho.) I still haven’t demo’d those, or Martin Logans, or any speakers yet, on the speaker topic.

/ / / / / STORE #2 IMPRESSIONS / / / / / (continuation of earlier teaser post):

Here we go again, with the same old headphone try-out routine, onto a different store… Surprisingly small selection this time. But nothing I had heard before. Also, a surprising variety of hardware… Quality hardware, at that! Things I’ve actually seen on Headphones.corn, and things I’ve even been recommended from here! :exploding_head:

First up, the main(?) headphone room. Very small… Awful, low sitting chair. The atmosphere in this store feels like a Police-station-turned-warehouse, full of silent, carpeted rooms and cold, glass block windows with random boxes scattered around. :l There’s 4 Dan Clark headphones on a desk, with a good pile of equipment behind them, and several forgettable Grados one must blot out of one’s memory(you know the deal). AEON 2C, AEON 2 Open, Ether 2, Ether 2C. Oop, I spot a random McIntosh headphone to my right that I’ve never heard of before, sitting on a big cardboard box, and later found an odd pile of headphones I’ve also never heard of hiding against the wall to my left, behind a divider wall. All of those are likely terrible, though, and certainly not worth diddling with during the 2 hours and some change I had to spend this day.

Alright, so I’ve got the CMA 15(this store is also a Questyle dealer, but doesn’t have the CMA 15, or M15, currently) out and warmed up a bit, connected to my phone via BT, with my notepad out, ready to decide who my first victim will be in this quiet, new town… AEON 2 Open, YOU’RE UP!!! Wow, really nice! Very smooth! Great bass - thick, warm, and strong(but not overbearing!). Not exceptionally detailed, and could use some more sub-bass. Great treble/general detail, but could be slightly less dark tuned, and clear. Somewhat hazy. Nice width and vocal engagement. Good sense of space, but compact depth. Zero fatigue! Superb comfort! Very impressive overall! (SE cable, stock black/neutral filter, and pads? Really curious what the bright filter will sound like(or other pads); could make it perfect, except for the slight lack of sub-bass)

Up next, AEON 2C. (SE cable, stock filter and pads?) Nice frontal 180 imaging; very focused and engaging. Rather boomy, sloppy bass. Great, fatigue-free detail like AEON 2 Open. More bassy. More compact space :frowning: Bass distortion w/Electronic. Extremely similar sound to AEON 2 Open. Brighter, more fatiguing. Worse bass and space.

Ether 2 - (SE cable, stock everything?) Super light, as the Prophecy has foretold! From research memory, I believe this IS the lightest over-ear headphone there is, excluding bizarre stuff like KPH30i and cheap junk. Nice headband adjustments! (ALL of these DCA headphones have amazing comfort… This should not be overlooked! The AEONs are probably THE most comfortable headphone I’ve ever tried, even… Maybe L700 comes close? Light headphones, with awesome pads, and great headband mechanism.) Anyway… A little brighter than AEON 2O. Neutral bass. More distant. Lighter and thinner sounding.
------> N E U T R A L <------ ?
Not that detailed, but great, natural tonality. Does well, but I like AEON 2O more; less fatigue, more detail and bass.

Ether 2C - (SE, stock everything?) I have a bad feeling already, after going through Ether 2 :\ Slightly brighter and more fatiguing than Ether 2. Even less bass, but more space and more distanced. Tonally sounds sunken/hollow… This was easily the worst of the 4.
AEON 2 > AEON 2C > Ether 2 > Ether 2Whocares

Ahhh, time to stand up from this god awful, too low beach chair, stretch, and head to the dream-filled BRAVURA CHAMBER, where I had been destined to attend this day! After spending only 1.93 minutes(I stopwatch’d it, don’t worry; it was a new world record time, too) to demo and collect my thoughts on the DCA models, I figured I had AT LEAST a full 2.4 minutes left for Bravura. Well, there it is… Sitting on a shelf, about 4 feet up, not even connected to anything! What a pity. Perhaps some foreshadowing as to its verdict…? I truly did not think so, as this is after all a Mighty ELECTROSTAT, the rarest of breeds, that are so few and far between…! I had to come up with a short playlist quickly, to load onto the streamer(Bluesound Vault 2i), because Bluetooth’ing my songs wasn’t the best idea here, and a streamer was already connected. Um… Ozzy, New Found Glory, Kubbi, Ott. No tracks I was immediately familiar with, but certainly bands and albums that I was. So I pick up the headphones and check them out. Moderate weight, good build, good materials; nothing that stunned me to see or feel. These are REALLY clampy and tight fitting! Kind of like Sennheiser. They fit well, after I got them on. Very chunky headphones… Oh, and the cable is definitely stiff and a pain in the butt to deal with. Not a problem Stax has, with their flexible ribbon cables. I forgot to check for this, but did not notice issues due to the drivers being sealed, as I recall reading about. Nothing wrong so far, really… Alright, so the hardware volume knob adjustments suck; too big of steps. There is a high level of transparency. Neutral+ bass with nice thump and impact. Nice bass power. Not very spacious. Compact, focused sound. Reminiscent of L300 LTD, except with better detail and richness. Pretty lively, probably too much so. Fantastic tonality and detail handling. Overly warm. Ozzy’s “Your No Different” sounded awful… (no idea what track version, or bitrate, or sample rate, etc this was) vocals were too pushed, and the intro guitar was too close and ear-piercing. I found New Found Glory’s Rock to be a bit too bright. I think sharp treble sounds with this kind of hardware is dangerous, and you really have to be careful with that volume knob. . .
Dense, rich tone.
Very alive and electric sounding, as expected.
Needs more separation and space.
Incredible with Electronic, but bass was a bit overpowering in a fatiguing way(perhaps due to the sealed drivers…?).
Treble was a touch bright.
For $7K…? HAHAHA. NO. WAY. Give me that AEON 2 instead, while I save all that money for STAX!

Random Intermission Bonus: McIntosh MHP1000 - These basically made me vomit, especially when I see them in pics like this, next to things that make you cry tears of joy. Good bass levels. Treble a bit tinny, and harsh/shouty. Poor space and tonality. Dry. Never again.

Chapter 2 - The Big Guns, In The Big Room

Getting to see, and hear, DAVE for the first time was an experience nearly as powerful as the time I demo’d HE6 6S and LCD-3 (pre-fazor?) all those years ago on a ~$20K system. The sound I heard was awesome… but I can’t say I heard as good of sound with AEON 2+DAVE and my current demo tracks as I did with HE66S+McIntoshwhatever+Marantz CD6007 and the burnt CD tracks I had that day. You could hear that same high-end, lively, ELECTRIC underbelly running through the headphones with DAVE like you could with the Bravura. It’s as if all of the minute, low-level sounds are magnified and present more(which they probably ARE), but only in a pleasing way, not an in-the-way way. My trusty little NDH 30 sounded a little better, too, but was clearly small fries for DAVE. BLU MkII was there, too, but wasn’t part of my Destiny that day. The volume knob on DAVE is freaking awesome. Best volume knob in the Universe, probably. It’s cooler than cool, and screams PRECISION MADE. DAVE is the most impressive piece of headphone hardware I’ve ever seen, bottom line. I’m not sure what competes with this thing, but I haven’t heard anything similar, other than the McIntosh+Marantz+? one I heard years ago. But I’ll tell you a little secret - that AEON 2 Open really impressed me, too, on every track I threw at them… For the first time in forever, I finally heard something about as awesome as that HE66S and LCD-3. Probably not as awesome, but awesome in a different way, at least. And so, I ordered a new AEON 2 from BloomAudio.corn for a cool $750 with 1 day shipping, and an Audiophile Ninja 4.4mm cable, and Forza Noir Hybrid 4.4mm cable!!! :sparkles:  :sparkles:

The End. (for now. . .)

I love everything about that shop. It looks like a seedy pawn shop from the outside, like “I need to double check I have the correct address” kind of looks. The first time I entered there were cardboard boxes of Audio Research stuff everywhere like it was a warehouse and I saw an old guy behind the counter who didn’t seem to be looking at me or really paying much attention…and then I realized he was using the vision accessibility feature on his phone having it read very quickly what was on the screen. How crazy is that? A blind guy working at a hifi shop! I think it might have been the owner’s dad.

I got to talking with (what I would later find out was) the owner/operator of the shop. At the time I didn’t know anything and I was really floundering on which direction to go, speakers, headphones, would I need room treatments, different speakers ?!?!?!?! I was paralyzed.

This guy in jeans and a hoodie walked me through a few things and set me on the path of buying my first integrated 2 channel amplifier. Surrounded by those gorgeous Wilsons in the post above and just eye-wateringly beautiful ARC reference amps, He said (paraphrasing) “The best stereo system in the world is the one that makes you get to listen to and enjoy the most” and went on to say 90% of customers don’t have expensive room treatments. It gave me the confidence to take the first leap of faith and order my first expensive amp.

I also got to hear the ether 2s for the first time and before that I’d only heard my HD650 and Blue Lolas so it was pretty surreal. Also seeing a DAVE up close was wild. I ended up buying a SS Hegel instead of the Prima Luna, but I try and stop by regularly and buy what I can just because I think that place is amazing. Very laid back, unassuming, and I’ve been told Multiple times to come back and listen however long I want to whatever I want. It’s a real Gem.

Bonus wider shot of that listening room that started my love affair with those ARC reference components

Congrats on finding something you liked. But out of interest, why didn’t you buy the headphones from the place you demo’d them?

Must be a midwest website.

They’re actually based in Canada, but they also have a forum and discord. Pretty big company that even has a large show presence at CanJam. The owner is a nice guy.

Haha, yep. All you see is a big WALL from the parking lot… Store sign is on the street side of the building.

I am not fond of this store’s atmosphere. It feels “cold” and it’s too cramped and personal, IMO. I don’t think that can be solved without a new building, though lol. The guy helping me out seemed to be rather on-edge and kinda brash(?), too, so that didn’t help… But I don’t want to say anything bad about these guys, really. :\ We all have rough days.

Actually, I thought this WAS the Owner, Mark. Or else he was elsewhere in the building at the time, where I didn’t see him, because he was certainly aware of who I was when I called back later to recommend they get Stax in(and I only saw 2 people there). By the tone of his voice, he didn’t seemed to be interested in getting Stax stuff. The first store WILL have an energizer soon, however.

I SHOULD have…! I had really been thinking about it, too, but it wasn’t on my mind at all when I tallied up my money, and saw that I had enough. A) They didn’t seem to be offering any discounts, unlike the first store, with the much nicer, more typical hifi environment, and that LCD-4 at $2850, so I wouldn’t have had enough to buy them yesterday from their store with extra cables. B) I’m really hoping they get Stax, energizers, and the top DCA models in, and that they have other amps or DACs I WILL want to buy more of from them  I could still get my Hegel 120 from them, or the other store, for starters.

Often times, with dealers, you can negotiate the price. I always ask what flexibility the dealer has with their price, where I feel good that I got a discount and they feel good because they still make a profit. It’s all part of building the relationship with them.

I wonder if either of these stores do price matching. I’ve seen some other speaker stores that do, mentioned on their website, but this was never mentioned to me by the folks in either of these stores. You’d think they would tell you right away about something nice like that, such as they make very clear with the great pricing features and return options they have at Micro Center, for one example.

It’s not a good feeling or experience, having to haggle around, when purchase and return options aren’t mentioned up front like that :\ This matches the feeling of the store atmosphere itself.

Not really how it works.
Any brick and Mortar store has at least 40% margin to play with, how much of that they are willing to eat depends on how well you know them, your history as a customer, whether they think you are going to come back, how difficult it is to replace the inventory, how quickly the inventory moves, whether they think you messed them around, and how they feel that day.

Asking them if there is any leeway on the price is a good starting point.
Telling them someone else will sell it to you for less usually works.

Buying Cars and Musical Instruments works the same way.

Did you test them all, and actually choose one? For speakers, it seems NO store carries all of the ~6 models I’m interested in, so I will have to order them all without hearing a single one lol. I’m fine with that, tho. Just the way it is, usually!

Another thought… You know, when I go to these stores and test their stuff, I feel like I am offering good feedback with the suggestions I make, as to what new models they should order(that would likely lead to better sound results), and what is bad about their current setups, holding things back… but it never seems like stores don’t EVER care what you have to say.

I would love to work at these stores for free, part-time, just to set up & test the equipment, and maximize the sound their products can output. But… they probably wouldn’t care about it. The showroom guy at Store 2 was telling me I was only listening to DAVE at half resolution, after I was done… But isn’t 350KHz of oversampling enough oversampling…? You’re telling me it has to be 705KHz to REALLY sound good? Come on, now… Just set it to 44.1, and cut the variables! I didn’t hear a difference, at least not with a mere AEON 2. And super special, expensive high-res, high sample orchestral or 2-piece Chesky acoustic band tracks are cool and all, but that’s simply NOT the music I ever really listen to, so it’s not what I am gonna test with. I want MY music to sound better.
