That looks like a good space to work with.
Going to put as big of a carpet down as I can fit to reduce reflections a bit more. The room being a trapezoid already takes care of a lot of the acoustics.
Eventually the rack will live in the left corner behind the couch.
Surprise, surprise, I’ve been missing my WA22. Although I am currently trying to travel down the IEM rabbit hole at the moment, I picked this WA6 up off Head-Fi. Fortunately, I still have a few tubes from my WA22 so I’ll be exploring what this can do this afternoon.
Ive really always wondered how the woo wa6 sounds, it looks like it could be a budget gem if you already got some tubes and the SE version with its power supply looks amazing too
I got yincrows flagship earbuds rw4000 (non in ear), they are quite something I gotta say im really enjoying them, but the cable looks and is bad quality, im awaiting an mmcx cable to improve this.
I’ve got a pair of GE 6EW7s and a brown base Mullard 5Z4GY in it and it sounds great.
My trusty “tube can” and most familiar headphone is my HD560s. It sounds wonderful here, a bit bass-shy though for my developing taste for bass, typical of this headphone. I plugged in my HE-5LE and although it sounded decent, I had the Woo maxed out and it was not loud enough - this amp not suitable for HE-6 and the like! Then I plugged in my SuperMix 4… THIS is my favourite on this amp so far. Firstly, noise floor? Nope. Or not audible to me with these IEMs anyway. There is a wonderful mid bass bloom, previously absent to the very-Harman SM4. I really, really do not care for too much and/or uncontrolled mid bass, but the WA6 just puts the right emphasis here, filling out the FR between the elevated sub bass and lower mids.
Very happy with this WA6 so far.
I think the woo wa6 is a SET amp so yeah, those sound pretty clean, and probably more than enough to control the 560s’ treble peak. Maybe they need more juice for the he5, I still know very little about the wa6, ive always wanted one but for a SET amp I went with the Quicksilver HA which im expecting next month.
Congrats on your purchase.
18 Kilograms of Marantz from the 90s: PM-80 II with a minor issue on output A
Will give this an overhaul as needed, hoping dry solder joint somewhere near the output protection.
This arrived yesterday, thanks to @Christof. I’ve spent a number of hours with it today, and I have already noticed what a pleasing, musical tuning and timbre it has. It is very detailed and has almost a delicacy despite being able to hit hard. The only time the treble has gotten a bit crunchy is with some tracks of Tool so far.
I’ll post more later, so far I’m really enjoying it! I started with the gain on my Violectric V590 at +12, volume frequently in the 1 to nearly 3 o’clock position, switched to +18 I think that’s better. (Using Yggy OG A2 DAC.) Bass seems to hit harder, no distortion or clipping which some have reported with V222.
Hello hello! It’s been a long time since I’ve bought anything, but I picked up @dB_Cooper’s Plixir power supply!
I still struggle to understand how swapping the PSU on a streamer can make as much of a sonic difference as it does, but here we are, the difference is quite noticeable. The music is more detail-forward, and even though that is the direction I wanted to push things, I’m still acclimating to it.
Also, it’s a 9V supply and the opticalRendu is definitely running a bit warm, hah.
It’s pretty amazing and even wilder is the fact that another PS will have a different signature. lol You kind of have to stop at a certain point and basically settle on what’s a good fit for your taste and for your chain.
If you haven’t, put a big heatsink on the OR. There are a lot of mods out there for it. I wish I knew I would have just given you mine as I no longer have an OR.
2 things to help, you can put a small heat sink on the actual CPU and you can also put a big CPU heatsink on the case of the OR.
Any examples of the small heat sink on the actual cpu? And the big cpu heatsink on the case?
I can’t find pics of it online now but I know Sonore does this on their Signature Rendu V2… they put a small heatsink on the actual processor.
you can attach it either mechanically I used heatsink paste and held it on with a wire tie (so it could be undone) or you can use a heat sink bond. Any small heatsink will do like the ones you can put on Pi boards.
Just be careful installing and make sure it’s on tight, if you do it wrong and it falls off, you’ve got an expensive paperweight on your hands.
I was so impressed with the Hiby R4, I decided to upgrade immediately after buying it. This is apparently, sonically, it’s big brother. We shall see.
Oh yeah, I didn’t mention that the Plixir is swapping in for a Sonore-branded power supply that I’ve been using, so I wasn’t even using the stock SGC one before! And maybe it’s just because I haven’t changed anything in like a year and so I’m quite attuned to the sound of this system, but the signature difference was not subtle at all.
Thanks for the heads up! Yeah, I’ll definitely look into putting a heat sink on the outer case.
Even though I am supposed to be observing the self-imposed rule of ‘only IEM gear’ at the moment, when this popped up on Head-Fi last week, I just couldn’t help myself. I’ve wanted to hear one forever!
Those make a very nice set of bookends together, congrats! Hope you enjoy it, welcome to Club Violectric.
I guess I haven’t been around here for a while. Life happens. I think I’m back in the hobby again though. I’ll post the things I forgot to a while back that I bought.
I also bought these a while back and never posted them. Picking them up again, yeah, I remember why I did not like them. Even with the thicker pads on to seal better and a new cable, they still are very boring and unimpressive. Thinner pads ripped when I tried to put them on. No fault of the seller, they tried offering lots of suggestions and help. It’s just a bad product imo. For anyone looking for closed-backs, do not buy these! I’m not going to pretend these are good and try to sell them back to someone. I just have to accept the loss and move on.
Here’s a link to my rant about them: Suggestions for portable comfy closed-back under $250... maybe $300 - #34 by Soren
On another note, I just purchased a couple of some new things. They should be arriving soon…
I keep my 177X Go around to remind me what awful headphones sound like
Because I am a fool, I sold my R4 before the M23 arrived. Listening to the M23 over the past 24 hours, it sounded like there was some magic or something missing from the M23 compared to my memory of the R4, so I bought another R4 to compare…
I know most on here have now learnt to avoid this error but I guess I’m a slow learner: do not sell the thing you’re replacing until the new thing has arrived and you have AB’d the new and old kit…
I have two weeks until I board a plane for 10 hours. That is how long I have to decide which DAP to keep. The first hour hasn’t been easy. I’d say that the R4 has a better/more weighty mid range in some way that gives distorted guitars more authority. I thought the M23 sounds pretty good in this regard, but AB’n them with a mix of headphones and IEMs, I think I may have put my finger on the crux of it already; the R4 sounds ever so slightly fuller, without any noticeable sacrifice …so far.
