We love to upgrade sell , buy, trade our gear just like any other consumerist hobby. We love trying new stuff We love trying old stuff. What has been the piece of gear that has stayed with you for the longest since you started the hobby?
For me it’s the DT 990 250 ohm. ThE GAaaAmEr headphone. and really for a good reason. for its heyday it was the best in it’s price segment along with the dt 880 in imaging respectfully wide sound stage, and decent layering. the research going into buying this headphone for it’s use case and finding how to properly power it was my gateway into deeper gear like DACs and Amps. researching pairing led me to stuff like the liquid spark and the topping d10. the release of the tygr also led me to one of my first endeavors of tuning by intentionally flattening pads and swapping tuning pads to control the treble and elevate aspects of the sound. this thing is a beast. its not for everyone but is a proper work horse.
Oldest piece of working HiFi gear that still gets regular use is my repaired Epic Empire Dual 15 Subwoofer. Going on 16 yrs now, that’s a good run for something which has been used and abused. In all honestly the subs died out years ago but i refused to let go and found a gentleman who was skilled enough to re-build the amplifier for me with fresh upgraded parts.
Most everything else I own is slowly hitting the 10 yr mark in my hands… Decent run for electronics
My 2Channel system is pretty much all 30+Years old, minus a DAC if I use one in place of a CD/SACD player.
The Quicksilver M135 monoblocks, Melos PreAmp, and VMPS RM2’s were all made in the early 90’s, and I’ve owned them since then.
They all works and sound great, I did have to so a quick repair for a dry solder joint on one input of the Melos, but outside of that and blowing fuses on the Quicksilver a couple of times, by failing to have the correct load connected they’ve been trouble free.
I still have the KSC75s that I got in ~1996 as a Christmas present from my mom. A coworker of hers told her that they were good and cheap and that asshole is what caused the terrible affliction that is audio for me. I remember pulling the cable apart and running them up my sleeves and clipping them to the ends so I could lean on my hand and listen to music in class from 2nd grade all through high school and somehow my clumsy ass never broke them.
Wb ltd, I did my best to find a find a flatrering photo and this is the best I could
These 2 are made from 3 layers of maple, walnut and mahogany, cmon I cant even appreciate the layers as I would in a grado
@M0N littledrummerdude stopped me from wanting the wb ltd, it probably sucks as wired, the wireless version has so much new tech I really wanted one but lets face it not a clever purchase.
Audio-Technica ATH-IM50. It’s an IEM I really used to rate back when I was a musician. Great for monitoring, but also great for music listening. I thought I managed to knacker them with all of the sweating from gigging, and then using them in the gym, but they just needed a new wire. Eventually got TWS for the gym and then got into audio in a more serious way during the pandemic.
I haven’t listened to them in a while but it’d be fun to dig them out and see if I still think they sound good.
