Totaldac thread, d1 core / single / tube / six / unity / direct / twelve / digital / streamer

I’m surprised that Vincent still doesn’t have a page for the sublime reclocker.

The power supply doesnt require the hassle of sending the twelve in :kissing_heart:

but realy, yah. The pricing is such that it feels like it only realy makes sense once you have a sublime. From what I am guessing, a PS for a streamer + triunity is probabaly about as much as rthe upgrade to sublime is in the first place

That aluminum chonk looks amazing, like putting the transformers into a vault!

This is what made me most interested in it. Shielding transformers, from everything I know, is mega mega important so SQ, so keeping all that noise away from other componants (The TD live power is basicaly just trafos thrown in a box with what seems like not much care) seems real appealing to me.

For the curious, he will still build a d1-tube mk1 and that was pulled a few months ago, hence my interest in this or the d1-core to enter the td lineup a few weeks ago.

From your pictures of the live power and others of the standard PSU I wonder if the difference is a better quality toroidal transformer.

It is. Goes from a fairly standard one to a super fancy one. Ill see if I can get some pics of the one from the streamer

Im at some point going to upgrade the PSU on my basement level TD. Do not have live power at the moment but Im considering looking for a non TD solution.

The explanation of the live power being just a transformer swap seems both pricey and kind of a limited upgrade IMO; although, I know transformers can be pricey. Im sure there are other PSU makers out there that provide more for the buck. Im sure the TD live power works well and is an obvious upgrade but not all on brand PSU options are the best solution for performance.

I should try and find a pic of the PSU for the TD, see what’s in there.

The integrated streaming board is no longer an option for td DACs. I noticed it was removed from the website as suggested upgrades and the price list too, emailed Vincent and he stated:

" The streamer board is not currently offered for a DAC because I prefer to offer it only in the d1-streamer.

There is not planned replacement for a DAC."

d1-streamer-mk2 is €6,200, though this stand-alone does include the re-clocker board and USB Gigafilter.

That’s interesting. I wonder why the change? Vincent had mentioned that there was an option to remove the streamer board from the dac and use it in the d1-streamer if one decides to go that route. Modularity of totaldac was always a big attraction to me.

Probably makes sense for his customers, I wouldn’t have ordered it. Though it is nice to have.
I think a lot of people spending 10+K on a DAC are likely to either have or want an external source.

Are you using the streamer board, or another streamer box? I recall you had the EMM NS-1, how did that compare to the internal streamer?

I’m using the internal streamer, I thought as slightly better than the optical rendu as a USB source (which implies it’s very good), I never got around to trying it with the NS1.

How’s the TD compare to something like the WD?

@M0N and @Draaly How would you rate the d1-streamer-mk-2 compared to other streamer/reclockers in the same price range new?

If anyone else has experience with this unit, your input would also be appreciated, thank you ahead of time.

I have a line on this streamer for really good price used, hence the randomness of this question.

I have no experience with it, so I can’t comment lol

But I’d imagine it’s pretty great given the reclocker and their built in streamer option

Oh my bad, thought you had this in your chain at some point.

My thinking is I will likely end up with a totaldac in the near future, so instead of deliberating further about different streamer/ddc/reclockers options, grabbing this ahead of time would make sense as my streamer is the weak link in my chain being the Pi2AES with upgraded PSU.

Thanks!

Is their streamer basically a d1-digital-mk2 with a streamer integrated into it?

I’ve read your description of it and it seems like it’s right up my alley is it a clear step up from the likes of an Alpha USB?

Totaldac stuff (at least their non DAC stuff) doesn’t show up for sale in the used marked often and I’m thinking so much of it is dealer trade in and dealer then passes off to their own customer base.

Yes I believe so, it also I believe contains the “Gigafilter” which is their $1500 filtered USB cable.

I suspect it tends to be bought as a part of a TotalDAC system, so there are just less of them in the wild compared to the other dedicated streamers, and they aren’t exactly common used.

I also suspect that people buy new to take advantage of Vincent’s return policy. And once they have a Totaldac, they probably don’t feel like selling because they can take advantage of Vincent’s upgrade policy.
